Urban Food Systems Affect Almost All 17 SDGs: EATx UNGA 2016 [viewed]

eatX201620 September 2016: A high-level event on nutritional challenges in urban settings illuminated challenges with urban food systems, and linkages with racial and economic injustice, advertising, climate change, and rural communities. Johan Rockström, Executive Director of the Stockholm Resilience Centre, who moderated the panel discussion during the event, said sustainable urban food systems are a sine qua non for the 2030 Agenda, and without them the world will not be able to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Event: IUFRO Regional Congress for Asia and Oceania 2016 [viewed]

Held under the theme 'Forests for Sustainable Development: The Role of Research,' this regional congress of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) will aim to reach a common understanding of the status and trends of forests and the consequent research needs towards sustainable forestry development under such changes. Event: Fifth Mediterranean Forest Week [viewed]

The Fifth Mediterranean Forest Week is dedicated to forests and landscape restoration in the Mediterranean basin. It aims to strengthen exchanges and synergies between global stakeholders in the restoration of Mediterranean forests and landscapes, to help achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15 (Life on Land) and other globally agreed targets related to forest restoration, and facilitate the adaptation of Mediterranean forest landscapes to climate change. It is hosted by Morocco and co-organized by the Committee on Mediterranean Forestry Questions - Silva Mediterranea of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Global Mechanism of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the World Bank, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and other partners.

Event: UNECE COFFI 74 [viewed]

The 74th session of the Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry (COFFI 74) of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) will review and guide activities in data collection and analysis, policy support, capacity building and communication, and will focus on the commercial aspects of forest-based industries. It will also contribute to the Strategic review of the Integrated Programme of Work 2014-2017 and provide recommendations for the future programme. It will be followed by a workshop, on 'Measuring the value of forests in a green economy,' on 21 October 2016.

Event: World Soil Day 2016 [viewed]

World Soil Day has been commemorated annually since 2013, following the adoption of a Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Council resolution calling on the wider UN System to recognize 5 December as World Soil Day and to institutionalize its observance. The resolution was subsequently adopted by the 68th UN General Assembly. World Soil Day 2016 will feature celebrations at global, regional and national levels under the theme of ‘Soils and pulses, a symbiosis for life'.
