Event: Budapest Water Summit 2016 [viewed]

The Budapest Water Summit 2016 will build on the results of the Budapest Water Summit 2013, the Paris Climate Change Conference and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Summit will seek to ensure that efforts addressing water issues are the source of cooperation, peace and development in all countries that have a stake in sustainable development, rather than being the cause of global risks and further conflicts in the 21st century. The Budapest Water Summit 2016 will address issues related to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all). In addition, stakeholder meetings will convene on the following themes: Science-Technology Forum; Youth Forum; Civil Society Forum; and Women's Forum. Participants are expected to adopt the “Budapest Statement 2016” at the conclusion of the Summit.

APEC Senior Officials Discuss Actions Addressing Illegal Timber, Environmental Crime [viewed]

apec21 August 2016: Senior officials and technical experts from 21 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies discussed policy measures to address illegal logging, fishing, land development and mining at APEC's Third Senior Officials Meeting (SOM). Participants called for increased cooperation to ensure environmental sustainability and agreed on a timber legality guidance template.

Inaugural African Drought Conference Issues Windhoek Declaration, Adopts Strategic Framework [viewed]

unccd_namibia_au19 August 2016: The High-Level Meeting of the inaugural African Drought Conference, comprising African member States and Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), adopted an overarching Strategic Framework to enhance resilience to the impact of drought events in Africa, issued the 'The Windhoek Declaration,' and underscored the importance of drought resilience in achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Event: Third Meeting of Parties to the CMS Gorilla Agreement [viewed]

The Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) will hold the Third Meeting of Parties to the Gorilla Agreement (GA MOP3) in parallel with the GRASP Council, so that the two organizations can streamline efforts to conserve gorillas in Africa. MOP3 will convene from 20-25 November. The third meeting of the Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) Council will convene from 21-24 November.

Event: Third Meeting of the GRASP Council [viewed]

The third meeting of the Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) Council will address climate change, sustainable palm oil and illegal trade, as well as a proposal to add gibbons to the GRASP mandate. Governments, research institutions, conservation organizations, UN agencies and the private sector will attend the meeting. The Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) will hold the Third Meeting of Parties to the Gorilla Agreement (GA MOP3) in parallel with the GRASP Council, so that the two organizations can streamline efforts to conserve gorillas in Africa. GRASP is comprised of 105 partners, and the Council meets every four years to set global priorities and targets for the conservation of chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos and orangutans and their habitats in Asia and Africa. GRASP's six priorities areas include: political advocacy, illegal trade, green economy, disease monitoring, conflict sensitive conservation and habitat protection. GRASP was founded in 2001 to ensure the long-term survival of great apes, all of which are either endangered or critically endangered. The GRASP Secretariat is co-hosted by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The GODAN (Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition) Global Summit will focus on open data and how it can be used to address global issues especially issues affecting nutrition and agriculture. GODAN supports the proactive sharing of open data to make information about agriculture and nutrition available, accessible and usable to deal with the urgent challenge of ensuring world food security. GODAN currently has over 330 partners from national governments, non-governmental, international and private sector organizations that have committed to a joint Statement of Purpose.

LAC Advances Negotiations on Principle 10 Regional Instrument [viewed]

ECLAC15 August 2016: Latin American and Caribbean countries held the fourth negotiating session on a regional agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters (Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development). The negotiating committee considered a revised draft text (LC/L.4059/Rev.2) that addresses substantive aspects of the agreement and reflects countries' earlier proposals.

Event: Second Annual Solutions Summit [viewed]

The Second Annual Solutions Summit will highlight projects and exceptional innovators that are working to develop solutions to one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Summit will showcase actions and projects that advance the objectives of upcoming UN global Summits and Conferences on climate change, the new urban agenda, urbanization, oceans, refugees and migrants, and partnerships. The Summit will convene during the 71st UN General Assembly's (UNGA) high-level week. The UN Foundation, the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS), and the Global Innovation Exchange are organizing the Summit in collaboration with the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the Global Entrepreneurship Council.

Event: International Snow Leopard Day [viewed]

Events across the world are being organized to celebrate International Snow Leopard Day. The Day commemorates the adoption by all snow leopard range countries of the 'Bishkek Declaration,' as well as the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Program (GSLEP), on 23 October 2013, in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. As part of the celebrations, on Friday, 21 October, there will be a High-level panel event held at UN Headquarters in New York, US. This event, organized by the UN Development Programme (UNDP), GSLEP Secretariat and Kyrgyzstan, will: commemorate the Day; re-enforce GSLEP collaboration and synergies; highlight innovative programming, partnerships and progress on the ground; and strengthen political support and commitment for ongoing and new GSLEP initiatives, including the Global Presidential Summit in Bishkek planned for the summer of 2017.
