UNCTAD to Play "Central Role" in Achieving SDGs [viewed]

unctad1425 July 2016: Delegates agreed to give the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) a central role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), by adopting a framework that will guide UNCTAD's work over the next four years, and that is primarily focused on realizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 14th session of UNCTAD (UNCTAD 14) resulted in a political declaration and the ‘Nairobi Consensus,' on providing technical assistance to ensure that globalization and trade benefit people in developing countries.

Event: High Level Symposium on SDG 6 and Targets [viewed]

The ‘High-Level Symposium on SDG 6 and Targets: Ensuring that No One Is Left Behind in Access to Water and Sanitation' aims to discuss policy measures, actions and means of implementation (MOI) to fast-track implementation of SDG 6 (Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all) and its related targets. Participants will discuss: country experiences in advancing integrated water resource management (IWRM); and lessons learned in improving access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), increasing water use efficiency, reducing water pollution, and protecting water basins and ecosystems. The Symposium will address opportunities for fostering regional and multilateral cooperation and launch specific partnerships related to SDG 6. The Government of Tajikistan is organizing the Symposium in cooperation with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and other partners.

Terrestrial Ecosystems Finance Update: GEF Council Approves Work Program and Projects, Forest Finance in Focus [viewed]

UNESCO Committee Adds 12 Sites to World Heritage List [viewed]

UNESCO17 July 2016: The 40th session of the World Heritage Committee adopted the Istanbul Declaration on the Protection of World Heritage, which invites States Parties to take measures and act together against the destruction of common heritage of humankind in cooperation with the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Participants also added 12 sites of special cultural or physical significance to the World Heritage List.

African Union Summit Reviews Progress on Gender Equality, Women's Land Rights [viewed]

au_eca_afdb17 July 2016: The 27th African Union (AU) Summit, which convened on the theme 'Women's Rights, Human Rights,' recognized Algeria, Rwanda, South Africa and Tunisia as the best-performing countries in promoting women's rights and gender equality across the political, social and economic arenas. On the sidelines of the Summit, the Land Policy Initiative launched a campaign to achieve 30% documented allocation of land by African women by 2025.

ELD, PROFOR and UNCCD Marshall Evidence in Support of Land Restoration [viewed]

eld_cgiar_unccd_proforJuly 2016: Partners of the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative are fine-tuning a joint roadmap for the next phase of the Initiative, which aims to increase awareness raising and engage key stakeholders to scale up efforts to promote sustainable land management (SLM). Some recent studies bolstering the case for large-scale land restoration initiatives include: the ELD synthesis report, 'The Value of Land'; the forthcoming Global Land Outlook, to be published by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in 2017; and an article by the Program on Forests (PROFOR), which draws some lessons from Fazenda da Toca, a large-scale land restoration project in São Paolo, Brazil.

The meeting also featured discussions on aquaculture, food security and blue growth, among other issues.
