UNFF Expert Group Discusses Strategic Plan, Programme of Action [viewed]

UNFF27 April 2016: The UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) has held the first meeting of the Open-ended Intergovernmental Ad Hoc Expert Group (AHEG1). The Expert Group, created during UNFF11, is tasked with developing: proposals on a replacement for the reference to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the UN Forest Instrument with an appropriate reference to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); the Strategic Plan for the period 2017-2030; and the quadrennial programme of work (4POW) for the period 2017-2020.

April 2016 Climate Finance Update: Key Meetings Mobilize Action, Adaptation Put under the Spotlight [viewed]

climate_finance_april_20161 May 2016: In the Paris Agreement, agreed upon by 195 UN Member States in December 2015, countries agreed to make “finance flows consistent with a pathway towards low greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate-resilient development.” Developing countries will receive financial resources for both mitigation and adaptation actions, while developed countries are expected to continue to lead in mobilizing climate finance from a variety of sources, with public funds playing a significant role in reaching the previously agreed US$100 billion annual target by 2020. Monthly IIDS RS Climate Finance Updates aim to help track multilateral financing to support the finance goal agreed under the UNFCCC, which will in turn contribute to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 (Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts).

GSP ITPS Finalizes Draft Voluntary Guidelines on Soil Management, Plans for Monitoring Soil-related SDGs [viewed]

gsp_itps_fao21 April 2016: The 5th working session of the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) finalized the draft ‘Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management (VGSSM),' planned for implementation of the first Status of the World's Soil Resources Report (SWSR), and reviewed ongoing efforts to develop indicators to monitor progress on soil-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In other events held in March 2016, GSP partners elaborated regional implementation plans for the Eurasian and European Soil Partnerships.

The Global Soil Partnership (GSP) Plenary Assembly is the main annual meeting of the Partnership charged with reviewing and prioritizing GSP actions, and facilitating a balanced regional decision-making process. The GSP brings together members of the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS), the GSP Executive Secretariat, and representatives and partners of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO).

IYP 2016 Events Promote Pulses as “Climate-Smart” Food of the Future [viewed]

icp_fao20 April 2016: Two events organized as part of the International Year of Pulses (IYP 2016) have called for increased efforts to scale up global production of pulses, such as beans, chickpeas, and lentils, due to their multiple benefits as nutrient-dense, soil improving and “climate-smart” crops. The International Conference on Pulses for Health, Nutrition and Sustainable Agriculture in Drylands (ICP 2016) took place from 18-20 April in Rabat, Morocco, while the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) hosted a seminar in Rome, Italy addressing the links between pulses and soils (the focus of international efforts in 2015), on 19 April 2016.

Host of CBD COP 13 Releases Non-paper Supporting a Declaration on Biodiversity Mainstreaming [viewed]

mexico_cbd22 April 2016: Mexico intends to highlight the importance of biodiversity mainstreaming for the achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in its role as the host of the 13th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 13) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), with the aim of facilitating the adoption of a ‘Cancun Declaration.' Mexico has prepared a non-paper outlining possible elements of the declaration.
