UNGA President Provides Summary of Dialogue on Harmony with Nature [viewed]

15 June 2012: The President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, has released the report of its second high-level interactive dialogue on Harmony with Nature, held in New York, US, on 18 April 2012. This dialogue focused on scientific findings on the impacts of human activities on the functioning of the Earth System.

Global Conference Identifies Priorities for Biodiversity Data Management [viewed]

6 July 2012: The Global Biodiversity Informatics Conference (GBIC) has agreed on key priorities to foster the use of information technologies and social networks to: improve understanding of the role of biodiversity in sustaining human lives and livelihoods; and support biodiversity conservation. Participants agreed to develop an outlook document that will set priorities for biodiversity informatics, with a view to establishing an effective system for forecast and rapid response.

IWC Discusses Aboriginal Subsistence Whaling, Environmental and Health Matters [viewed]

6 July 2012: The 64th Annual Meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and the associated meetings of its Scientific Committee and other sub-groups took place in Panama City, Panama, from 11 June - 6 July 2012. The Commission addressed administrative and substantive matters, including aboriginal subsistence whaling, animal welfare, and climate change and cetaceans.

IOC Discusses Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy [viewed]

5 July 2012: As part of its Acclimate Project, the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) convened a high-level workshop to discuss a draft regional strategy for climate change adaptation for the western Indian Ocean islands. The event brought together representatives from Comoros, Madagascar, Reunion (France), Mauritius and Seychelles.

CITES-ITTO Cooperate to Support Timber Tracking [viewed]

6 June 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Secretariat of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) have agreed to support Parties' efforts to use modern tracking technologies for certain tree species. The agreement was reached during a workshop on "tracking technologies for forest governance," hosted by Malaysia, in Kuala Lumpur, from 15-17 May 2012.

Event: Asian Regional Workshop on Reflecting the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation in NBSAPs [viewed]

Organized by Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in collaboration with Botanic Gardens Conservation International and Singapore Botanical Gardens, this workshop will consider the need for and approaches towards reflecting national plant conservation targets in National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) as these are being updated in line with the framework of the CBD Strategic Plan.

Event: Regional Workshop for Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia Regions on Updating NBSAPs [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this workshop will assist countries from Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia in revising and updating their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) in line with the framework of the CBD Strategic Plan. The workshop will also address: the use of indicators to monitor biodiversity at national and regional levels for monitoring progress towards the global Aichi Biodiversity Targets; and the use of ecosystem-based approaches for adaptation that include conservation and restoration of ecosystems, as part of an overall adaptation strategy to reduce direct pressures on and promote sustainable use of biodiversity.

Event: Workshop on the Strategic Framework on Mediterranean Forests (SFMF) [viewed]

This workshop will start the preparations for the "Strategic Framework on Mediterranean Forests: Political orientations for the management of forest ecosystems in the Mediterranean territories" with a clear and realistic programme for the future and use this opportunity to share on the State of Mediterranean Forests. Additional sessions will focus on preparation of the sheets on the 10/12 thematic priorities to be developed in the Strategic Framework on Mediterranean Forests. The workshop is co-organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and will be attended by 20-25 experts.

Event: Workshop on NAMAs: National Mitigation Planning and Implementation in Agriculture [viewed]

This meeting will focus on supporting the development of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) as a tool for national mitigation planning and climate smart agriculture. The Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) Research Program, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) are sponsoring the workshop. It will support advancing understanding and practice on: decision making on national mitigation priorities; what role NAMAs can play and establishing NAMAs as a policy instrument; the kind of support is needed in terms of investments and finance, policy, and MRV. Proposed outputs include: a publication on lessons learned from NAMA implementation and commonalities and contrasts of NAMA experiences; the elaboration of examples of NAMAs and related measuring reporting and verification (MRV)/infrastructure/ institutional mechanisms to share; minimum requirements for effective implementation of NAMAs – institutions and capacities; decision trees/templates showing how countries can establish priorities and advance implementation; enhanced knowledge on associated tools and resources for NAMA decision making and implementation; identification of research and capacity development needs for effective planning around agriculture; and ways forward for effective NAMA planning. The meeting is by invitation only. CCAFS is a program of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
