XIV World Forestry Congress Launched [viewed]

fao_headquarters2 June 2015: The Government of South Africa and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) have officially launched the XIV World Forestry Congress, the first to be held in Africa. Scheduled for 7-11 September 2015, the Congress will focus on the role of forests in a sustainable future.

Event: Oceania Regional Conservation Forum [viewed]

The Oceania Regional Conservation Forum will provide a platform for members of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific to share their experiences and best practices, and to make decisions on a joint programme of action to enhance the resilience of people and nature in the region. Participants will discuss how they can contribute to global and regional efforts to halt environmental decline and promote socio-economic well-being that supports cultural and biological diversity.This meeting is held every four years as the IUCN prepares for the World Conservation Congress. The World Conservation Congress will be held in 2016 in Hawaii, US.

Event: 67th Semi-annual IEA-ETSAP Meeting [viewed]

The International Energy Agency's (IEA) Energy Technology Systems Analysis Program (ETSAP) will hold its 67th semi-annual meeting from 1-2 June 2015 in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Hosted by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the meeting will comprise two events: the ETSAP Regular Workshop; and the ETSAP Executive Committee Meeting. Topics covered during the workshop will include: impacts of renewable energy promotion; renewable energy technology integration; forecasting road transport energy demand; the energy-water nexus; decarbonization pathways; and synergies and co-benefits of climate change mitigation. The event will be held back to back with the International Energy Workshop 2015, hosted by IRENA in Abu Dhabi, the UAE, from 3-5 June.

Ramsar Convention Highlights "Dramatic Loss" of Global Wetlands as COP 12 Opens [viewed]

Ramsar1 June 2015: A Briefing Note released ahead of the 12th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (COP 12) outlines the latest scientific evidence with regard to the continued loss of wetlands globally and asserts that policy makers “have sufficient information to understand the urgent need to take appropriate actions to conserve wetlands and their services to people.”

GEF Council Consultation with CSOs Discusses CSO Engagement, Knowledge Management [viewed]

iisdrs_gef1 June 2015: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council consultation meeting with civil society organizations (CSOs) gathered approximately 100 participants to focus on three topics: a dialogue with the GEF CEO; strengthening CSO engagement in the GEF; and knowledge management in the GEF. Just after the close of the consultation, the first meeting of the new Working Group on Implementation of the GEF Public Involvement Policy (PIP) convened, involving members of the GEF CSO Network, the GEF Secretariat and the GEF Council. The day-long CSO Consultation took place immediately before the 48th meeting of the GEF Council, which will convene at the same venue from 2-4 June 2015.

Event: Seventh Session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Water Convention [viewed]

The seventh session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Water Convention is expected to convene in Budapest, Hungary. The Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention) was adopted in Helsinki in 1992 and entered into force in 1996. Almost all countries sharing transboundary waters in the region of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) are Parties to the Convention.

African Soil Experts Consolidate Regional Soil Partnership (IYS 2015) [viewed]

international year of soils22 May 2015: The African Soil Partnership consultation workshop that took place in Elmina, Ghana, from 20-22 May 2015, established a steering committee and finalized an implementation plan to guide the network's activities for the coming five years. Convened under the auspices of the International Year of Soils (IYS) 2015, the workshop aimed to further consolidate the regional network in order to contribute to the objectives of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP).
