Beating Famine Conference Discusses Upscaling of Evergreen Agriculture in African Drylands [viewed]

beating_famine21 April 2015: The Beating Famine Southern Africa Conference, held 14-17 April 2015, in Lilongwe, Malawi, explored strategies for expanding farmer-managed natural regeneration, alongside other sustainable land management practices, to help smallholder farmers boost their productivity and resilience to climate change. The conference also discussed ways to align these strategies with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other international aspirations, while preserving a “unique Southern African voice.”

EU Environment, Energy Ministers Discuss Biodiversity, Climate, Energy Efficiency [viewed]

EU16 April 2015: Latvia hosted informal meetings of the EU's environment and energy ministers to discuss the Union's environmental and climate and energy policies. The two meetings, which took place back-to-back, from 14-16 April, in Riga, Latvia, focused on biodiversity, international climate change negotiations, energy efficiency in the heating and cooling sector, and the interaction between biodiversity and renewable energy development.

Event: UNGA Dialogue on Harmony with Nature [viewed]

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) will host an inclusive, interactive dialogue on the theme, ‘Harmony with Nature: Towards achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) including addressing climate change in the post-2015 development agenda' in commemoration of Mother Earth Day. The dialogue will: provide an opportunity to reflect on the relationship between humanity and nature; promote the understanding of the Harmony with Nature paradigm; examine how Harmony with Nature can contribute to achievement of the SDGs; and provide examples on how society would need to function to be consistent with a Harmony with Nature paradigm. The dialogue will include an opening segment and multi-stakeholder panel discussions and will result in an UNGA President's summary.

UN Crime Congress Calls for Justice for All, Action on Wildlife, Forest Crime [viewed]

crime_congress19 April 2015: Participants unanimously adopted the Doha Declaration at the 13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, stressing justice for all as critical to the success of the post-2015 development agenda and to fighting criminal activities, terrorism and violence globally. In addition to making recommendations to be submitted to the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice convening in May 2015, the Congress lent special focus to the issues of wildlife and forest crime.

Event: CBD AHTEG on Indicators for the Strategic Plan on Biodiversity [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on indicators for the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 is expected to: identify a small set of measurable potential indicators to monitor global progress towards achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets; and prepare guidance on the different types of indicators and approaches used to monitor progress in implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity at regional, national and sub-national levels.

Event: 4th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves [viewed]

The Ministry of Environment of Peru (MINAM) through its National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (SERNANP) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)'s Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme are hosting the 4th World Congress to address issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Post-2015 Development Agenda. Specifically, the goal is to review implementation of the Madrid Action Plan for Biosphere Reserves 2008-2013, the Seville Strategy and the Statutory Framework of 1995. The Congress will assess lessons learned and new challenges faced by the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, and will develop and launch an Action Plan for Biosphere Reserves for 2016-2025.

Event: 13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice [viewed]

The 13th UN Crime Congress will convene under the theme ‘Integrating crime prevention and criminal justice into the wider UN agenda to address social and economic challenges and to promote the rule of law at the national and international levels, and public participation.' Participants will discuss: the links between crime prevention, security, justice and sustainable development; successes and challenges in implementation of policies and strategies for preventing crime and criminal justice in order to strengthen the rule of law and support sustainable development; international cooperation to prevent, combat and respond to transnational organized crime; and national approaches to public participation in strengthening crime prevention and criminal justice. The event will also feature side events, including on wildlife and forest crime. The Congress is expected to adopt the ‘Doha Declaration,' which will contain recommendations for the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in May 2015.
