UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference, CST S-3 Transmit Proceedings to CRIC 11 [viewed]

12 April 2013: In a keynote address by Tarja Halonen, former President of Finland and Chair of the High-level Panel on Global Sustainability, participants at the third Special Session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST S-3) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference were reminded that sustainable land management (SLM) can be one of the most important tools for poverty eradication, and they were challenged to send a strong message that a land degradation neutral world is possible, with concrete targets and a monitoring system to follow progress.

ECCAS Countries Adopt Plan to Protect Elephants in Cameroon, Chad and Central African Republic [viewed]

23 March 2013: Ministers of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) representing ministries of foreign affairs, defense and security issues, regional integration and wildlife protection convened an emergency meeting in Yaoundé, Cameroon and adopted an emergency anti-poaching plan (PEXULAB) to protect elephants in ECCAS countries.

INC-Forests3 Brings Forests Agreement under UN Umbrella [viewed]

Angola, Namibia and South Africa Sign Convention on Ocean Governance [viewed]

18 March 2013: Angola, Namibia and South Africa have signed the Benguela Current Convention, which establishes the first global multilateral Commission to apply the Large Marine Ecosystem (LME) approach to ocean governance. The agreement creates a permanent inter-governmental institution responsible for promoting the long-term conservation and sustainable use of the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME), an ocean area extending from Port Elizabeth in South Africa to the province of Cabinda in the north of Angola.

AMCOW Consultation Recommends Water Goal and Targets for Post-2015 Agenda [viewed]

1 March 2013: An African regional consultation on water in the post-2015 framework has resulted in the “Tunis Outcome Document for the Water Sector Post-2015 Thematic Consultations,” a common African position on water. In the outcome document, participants call for a stand-alone goal on water in the post-2015 agenda. The consultation took place on 1 March 2013, in Tunis, Tunisia, convened by the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW).
