Websites Prepared for International Year of Soils 2015 [viewed]

ec-iys27 August 2014: Two websites are under way that will serve as information resources on events and activities planned for the 2015 International Year of Soils (IYS). The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has launched the IYS website that will function as the main platform for information sharing. The European Commission is working on a soil-specific website that will provide information on IYS activities in the EU.

European Map of HNV Forests under Development [viewed]

foresteurope19 August 2014: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has published a technical report on assessing High Nature Value (HNV) in forests. The report, titled 'Developing a Forest Naturalness Indicator for Europe,' is meant to support the ongoing identification of HNV forests in Europe and is expected to contribute to the production of an HNV regional map.

Event: WOC Business Forum Workshop: 'Changing Oceans and Industry Futures' [viewed]

In conjunction with the World Ocean Council (WOC) Business Forum on Ocean Policy and Planning, WOC and the EU 'Ocean Certain' research project are organizing a workshop under the theme, 'Changing Oceans and Industry Futures: How Will Changes to Ocean Properties and Processes Affect Ocean Business?'. Fifteen ocean industry representatives will gather to give input to the research project, engage in participatory mapping of the industry, construct a future scenario and learn how the 'Ocean Certain' project will move forward with the insights gained at the workshop. The objectives of the event are both to inform industry representatives of the changes in ocean properties, processes and systems and to hear industry members' views on how these changes will affect their business.

Event: Seminar on Earth Observations in Support of Sustainable Water Management [viewed]

Organized as part of the 2014 World Water Week of the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), this seminar will present a collaborative programme to support the use of Earth Observation (EO) for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Capacity Development in Sustainable Water Management network (Cap-Net) and the European Space Agency's (ESA) TIGER initiative. The seminar will: showcase capacity-development activities in the areas of EO and IWRM in Africa, including an open source observation system and training material; assess the applicability of the programme to other regions; and discuss how EO can support energy-relevant aspects of IWRM.

EEA Updates Climate Change Indicators [viewed]

EEA6 August 2014: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has published 13 climate change indicators, updating information included in its 2012 assessment 'Climate Change, Impacts and Vulnerability in Europe.' According to EEA, the period 2004-2013 was Europe's warmest decade on record, and many global trends, such as sea level rise, warming oceans, and shrinking snow cover, are having significant impacts on the continent.

European Commission Quantifies Cost of Climate Impacts [viewed]

European Union 25 June 2014: Climate change-related damage could cost the EU €190 billion or more unless further climate action is taken, according to a study by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC). The study seeks to quantify the biophysical impacts of climate change on household welfare and economic activity by examining climate impacts on ten sectors in five EU regions through a broad set of climate model simulations.

CIFOR Seeks to Improve Legality of Timber from Small-Enterprises [viewed]

CIFORJuly 2014: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has released a brief examining ''Timber Legality Verification and Small-scale Forestry Enterprises in Indonesia,' which presents policy options for assessing and supporting the legality of forest products from small-scale enterprises to markets in the European Union. There are an estimated 700,000 small-scale forest enterprises in Indonesia.

CEPF, IUCN Will Provide US$9 Million for Pacific Biodiversity Projects [viewed]

iucn-cepf2 July 2014: The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has announced a call for proposals for biodiversity projects in the Pacific. IUCN says it will provide a total of US$9 million to non-governmental organizations to work on projects in 20 biodiverse areas in Papua New Guinea (PNG), Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, covering a total of 1.5 million hectares.

ICCWC Strategic Mission, MIKES Launched as CITES SC65 Opens [viewed]

cites-iccwc7 July 2014: At a side event organized during the sixty-fifth meeting of the Standing Committee of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES SC65), the International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime (ICCWC) launched its Strategic Mission 2014-2016. The Mission sets forth the agenda to fight wildlife and forest crime, providing the first strategic framework for the consortium's activities and future directions since its establishment in late 2010.

ABS Protocol Reaches 42 Ratifications [viewed]

Cbd Logo1 July 2014: The European Union (EU), Namibia and Samoa ratified the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) in May 2014, followed by Belarus, Guatemala, Spain and Uganda, which ratified in June 2014, and Vanuatu, which ratified on 1 July 2014, bringing the total number of ratifications to 42.
