UNECA14 November 2014: The inaugural Conference on Land Policy in Africa (CLPA), which met under the theme ‘The next decade of land policy in Africa: ensuring agricultural development and inclusive growth,' aimed to: strengthen advocacy for comprehensive land policy, and build capacity through improved access to knowledge and information; help create a platform for presenting research activities and networking opportunities; and focus the attention of relevant stakeholders on the issues and status of land policy development and implementation in Africa.

Central and West Africa Protected Areas and Biodiversity Observatory Launched [viewed]

CCAC Agriculture Initiative Expands to Methane Emissions from Rice [viewed]

ccac-ccaf-ciat-irri31 October 2014: A research effort to reduce methane emissions from rice cultivation in Viet Nam, Bangladesh and Colombia has been launched under the Agriculture Initiative of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC). Three international research institutions, working together with rice farmers, policy makers and other partners, expect to reduce emissions by 30-50% by using an innovative irrigation method.

CCAMLR Adopts Measures on Toothfish, Vessel Monitoring, Defers MPA Proposals [viewed]

ccamlrOctober 2014: Member countries of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) agreed on measures to conserve marine living resources in Antarctica at the 33rd annual meeting of the Commission, but did not reach consensus on two proposals on marine protected areas (MPAs). Agreements focused on, inter alia: catch limits for CCAMLR-managed fisheries; the toothfish; and the southwest Atlantic krill fisheries.

Event: Resource Efficiency in Practice [viewed]

This policy conference, organized by the Ecologic Institute, aims to present the results of the project 'Resource efficiency in practice - Closing mineral cycles,' which is supported by the European Commission, DG Environment. The event seeks to highlight best practices and solutions at the regional and farm levels, and embed these findings in the wider picture also addressing the legal framework and actions beyond the farm level. The project findings and relevant issues will be discussed with relevant stakeholders, including representatives of the European Parliament, European Commission, farmer unions and advisory services, NGOs, member states and regional authorities, as well as representatives from academia.

URBES Highlights Benefits of Green Infrastructure in Urban Areas [viewed]

theurbes28 October 2014: The Urban Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (URBES) project released a factsheet on green infrastructure that highlights how cities can use green infrastructure to tackle economic, environmental and social challenges while becoming more resilient to climate change, improving quality of life and strengthening the economy. The factsheet describes the European Union's (EU) Green Infrastructure Strategy, which aims to create a policy framework for promoting green infrastructure projects, and the benefits of green infrastructure in urban areas.

Conference Adopts Guadeloupe Roadmap on Biodiversity and Climate Change [viewed]

guadeloupe201430 October 2014: High-level representatives and experts from more than 40 countries, territories and independent states attending the ‘International Conference on Biodiversity and Climate Change' adopted the ‘Message from Guadeloupe' on biodiversity loss and climate change impacts in the European Union's (EU) outermost regions (ORs) and overseas countries and territories (OCTs). The message presents a five-year roadmap that addresses five priorities: building resilience to climate change; addressing biodiversity loss; developing a green and blue economy; advancing research; and facilitating access to resources.

European Commission JRC Study Identifies Areas at Risk of Desertification [viewed]

EU-SE4ALL22 October 2014: A study by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC) has identified areas in South America, Africa and Asia at climatological risk of desertification. The study, which used information from two indexes, found significant shifts in climate zones resulting from changes in the global hydrological cycle. As a result, arid areas have increased by 1.4-3.4% globally.

Western Balkans and Turkey Agree to Develop Regional Early Warning System [viewed]

Event: Regional Aquaculture Conference 2014 [viewed]

The Regional Aquaculture Conference 2014 will take place on the theme, ‘Blue Growth in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea: developing sustainable aquaculture for food security'. The conference aims to promote socioeconomic growth and food security in the Mediterranean and Black Sea from a blue growth perspective. Expert panels will convene on: enabling good governance in aquaculture; a healthy environment, a stronger aquaculture industry; boosting markets for aquaculture; and advancing aquaculture innovations. Participants will have the opportunity to share experiences and challenges, explore synergies and possibilities for joint action and mobilize political commitment towards a common aquaculture strategy for the region based on a blue growth approach. The Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) is organizing the conference with the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) in cooperation with the European Commission (EC).
