Event: Practical Training Course on Sustainable Sediment Management in Sava River Basin [viewed]

This course will provide information on: sediment monitoring; sediment balance in the river basin system; and evaluation of sediment quality and quantity. The course aims to strengthen implementation of the Protocol on Sediment Management to the Framework Agreement on the Sava River Basin.

UNEP Executive Director Commits to Increased Assistance to Africa at AMCEN [viewed]

UNEP12 September 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Achim Steiner addressed African ministers attending the 14th session of the African Ministerial Conference for the Environment (AMCEN), convening from 7-14 September 2012, in Arusha, Tanzania. Steiner underscored UNEP's commitment to assist African States in making the transition to a Green Economy, negotiating a new climate treaty, building awareness on chemicals and hazardous wastes, and improving the management of drylands.

Canada and US Amend Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement [viewed]

7 September 2012: Lisa Jackson, Administrator, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Peter Kent, Minister of Environment, Canada, have signed an amendment to the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, originally signed in 1972. The amendments strengthen US and Canadian cooperative action to address water quality threats and prevent harm.

APEC Economic Leaders Agree on Trade in Environmental Goods [viewed]

9 September 2012: Through the adoption of the 2012 Leaders' Declaration, also known as the Vladivostok Declaration, member countries in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) have agreed to significantly reduce tariffs and duties on green technologies. The Declaration, titled “Integrate to grow, innovate to prosper,” was adopted at the completion of the 20th APEC Economic Leaders' meeting, held in Vladivostok, Russia, from 8-9 September 2012.
