Fourth Africa Water Week Focuses on Water for Growth [viewed]

18 May 2012: The fourth Africa Water Week was organized around the theme “Water for Growth in Africa,” and aimed to identify ways to reinforce and build on progress made to achieve the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) targets on water and sanitation, as well as Africa Water Vision 2025. The conference also celebrated the 10th anniversary of the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW).

Informal Ministerial Roundtable on Climate Change Calls for Building on Durban [viewed]

EU8 May 2012: An Informal Ministerial Roundtable on Climate Change brought together representatives from 30 countries, including from least developed countries (LDCs) and the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), to build on the achievements of the Durban Climate Change Conference. The meeting, which was hosted by the EU, also provided an opportunity for Ministers to discuss the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

PROFOR Brief Focuses on Benefit Sharing Arrangements for Forest-Dependent Communities [viewed]

April 2012: The multi-donor Program on Forests Partnership (PROFOR) has published a brief on benefits sharing arrangements in initiatives for REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks). The brief focuses on how to identify beneficiaries when rights are unclear and how to transfer benefits.

Rio+20 "Friends of Water" Urge Establishment of Global Goal on Water [viewed]

Event: International Polar Year (IPY) 2012 Conference [viewed]

The International Polar Year (IPY) 2012 Conference draws international attention to the polar regions, global change, and related environmental, social and economic issues. Organized around the theme "From Knowledge to Action," the event brings together over 2,000 Arctic and Antarctic researchers, policy- and decision-makers, and a broad range of interested parties from academia, industry, NGO, education and circumpolar communities including indigenous peoples. The conference seeks to build on the momentum of IPY 2007-2008, which increased understanding of how indigenous knowledge could be combined with instrumented data in monitoring the changes in polar ice, snow and vegetation cover, marine and terrestrial animal migrations, and behavioral patterns of polar animals, birds, fish and cetacean species.

Second Session of Plenary Establishes IPBES, Selects Bonn as Location [viewed]

24 April 2012: The second session of a plenary meeting on the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) ended with the adoption of a resolution establishing the IPBES, following seven years of discussion. It also selected Bonn, Germany, as the physical location of the Platform's Secretariat. Other modalities and institutional arrangements also were considered.
