Western Indian Ocean States Commit to Resource Mobilization for WIO-CC [viewed]

28 October 2012: Participants in the second technical workshop of the Western Indian Ocean Coastal Challenge (WIO-CC) adopted a declaration committing to fulfill the WIO-CC, including by addressing the need for a resource mobilization and sustainable finance strategy that includes private sector engagement. Representatives from Comoros, France (Réunion), Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, and Tanzania (Zanzibar) attended the workshop, held from 22-26 October 2012, in Port Louis, Mauritius.

Training Course Issues Guidance on Sustainable Sediment Management in the Sava River Basin [viewed]

26 October 2012: The International Sava River Basin Commission (ISRBC), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) International Sediment Initiative (ISI) and the European Sediment Network (SedNet) hosted a training on sustainable sediment management (SSM) in the Sava River Basin. The training resulted in practical guidance for the development of a SSM Plan for the Sava River Basin.

Caribbean Ministers Sign Regional Water Security Declaration [viewed]

Nairobi Convention Focal Points Discuss Management of WIO Region [viewed]

UNEPSeptember 2012: The Focal Points Forum Meeting of the Parties to the Convention for the Protection, Management and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) Region (Nairobi Convention) met in Maputo, Mozambique, on 9 August 2012. The meeting focused on implementation of the Nairobi Convention, and preparations for the Seventh Conference of the Parties (COP 7), scheduled to convene in December 2012.

Event: International Roundtable on Transboundary Water Resources Management in the Southern Mediterranean [viewed]

Jointly organized by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), the Global Water Partnership Mediterranean (GWP-Med), the Global Environment Facility (GEF) International Waters Learning Exchange and Resource Network (IW:LEARN), and the Mediterranean Component of the EU Water Initiative (MED EUWI), with the support of the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea, this meeting will discuss progress and challenges in transboundary water cooperation in the Southern Mediterranean, share experiences, increase awareness of the UNECE Water Convention, and identify policy options for transboundary cooperation.
