Event: IPBES Regional Capacity Building Workshop [viewed]

In preparation for the second session of a plenary meeting on the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), the Department of Environment of the Islamic Republic of Iran in collaboration with the ECO Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ECO-IEST), with support from UNEP and financial support from the Government of Norway, is hosting a regional capacity building workshop and consultative meeting for ECO country members, as well as Asia and the Pacific. The objective of this regional gathering is to provide information on the IPBES process so far, present the agenda and documents for the second session of a plenary meeting and facilitate an exchange of views on these among governmental stakeholders.

Event: First IUFRO-FORNESSA Regional Congress [viewed]

The Congress will provide a platform for African forest scientists, forest managers and policy makers and their colleagues from other parts of the world to share and exchange information and experiences on critical issues affecting forest and wildlife resources in Africa. The overall goal of the congress is to demonstrate how forest science is impacting on livelihoods, environmental management and development in Africa. The Congress will highlight research that puts relevant information in the hands of forest communities, forest managers, policy makers, the private sector and civil society. Specific themes to be covered will include: Forests and Climate Change; Forests and Water; Forest Policy, Governance and Trade; Forest Biodiversity and Conservation; and Agroforestry, Energy and Food Security. IUFRO is the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations. FORNESSA is the Forestry Research Network of Sub-Saharan Africa, which is supported by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO). The conference is in part supported by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

Workshop Discusses Policy Support Challenges Facing the IPBES [viewed]

23 January 2012: An international workshop on the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has addressed neutrality in science, called for transparency and a balanced IPBES, and discussed the inclusion of indigenous and other types of knowledge. The workshop sought to provide input to the intersessional process on the establishment of IPBES.

18th Forum of LAC Environment Ministers Adopts Quito Declaration [viewed]

6 February 2012: The 18th session of the Forum of Ministers of the Environment (FEM 18) of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) brought together high-level environment officials from 31 of the 33 LAC countries who adopted ten decisions and the Quito Declaration.

First Meeting of CELAC Environment Ministers Creates Working Group to Define Regional Agenda [viewed]

6 February 2012: The first Meeting of Environment Ministers of the recently constituted Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) has created a working group to define a regional environmental agenda. The Ministers also informally agreed to cooperate during the preparations for, and conduct of, the June 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20).

CIFOR Assesses Indonesian Moratorium on Forest Concessions [viewed]

January 2012: Following the Indonesian Government's declaration in May 2011 of a two-year moratorium on new forest concession licences, the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has released a working paper examining the significance of this moratorium on forest governance.

CIFOR, UNODC Examine Measures to Control Illegal Logging in Indonesia [viewed]

January 2012: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) have released a working paper titled "Lessons for REDD+ from Measures to Control Illegal Logging in Indonesia," which examines the illegal logging context, including drivers, government regulations and moratoria, plantation development, certification options, and forest law enforcement and governance in Indonesia.

CIFOR Examines Role of Indonesian Wetlands in Addressing Climate Change [viewed]

January 2012: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has released an information brief, titled "Addressing climate change adaptation and mitigation in tropical wetland ecosystems of Indonesia," which calls for research to address information and communication gaps related to land use and carbon dynamics.

Event: Stakeholder Consultation Meeting on Agriculture Biotechnology in Africa [viewed]

The African Development Bank (AfDB) and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) are hosting a stakeholder consultation meeting to present and discuss the findings and recommendations of a study on agriculture biotechnology for Africa. It is expected that participants will prioritize key areas to be addressed, as well as identify and agree on roles, responsibilities and resources needed to enhance support for data collection, capacity building, renewed cooperation on biotechnology in the region, and outreach and communication to the public at large.

CIFOR Newsletter Deconstructs COP 17 for Forests [viewed]
