GEF to Address Biodiversity, Livelihoods, Climate Resilience in Belize [viewed]

GEF30 September 2014: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Board of Directors has approved a five-year project to sustainably manage Belize's natural resources and promote alternative livelihoods for local communities. Event: 7th International Conference on Ballast Water Management (ICBWM2014) [viewed]

The Seventh International Conference on Ballast Water Management will address the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (2004). The Convention has been ratified by 40 countries and is expected to come into force within the next two years. The Convention aims to decrease the rate of bio-invasions that result from shipping. The conference offers an opportunity for sharing experiences and solutions on the implementation of the Convention. It will also include a field trip to Singapore's Ballast Water Centre Facility and other sites. The Global Environment Facility (GEF), UN Development Programme (UNDP), GloBallast Partnerships Programme and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) are organizing the meeting.

Urgency of Healthy Oceans Stressed by Experts, Officials [viewed]

GEF, World Bank Partner to Manage Migratory Fish Stocks in Coastal Areas, ABNJ [viewed]

World Bank - GEF24 September 2014: The World Bank, in partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF), approved a project to improve the management of migratory fish stocks in coastal areas and areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) in four marine regions. The US$10 million project aims to maintain the economic benefits of sustainable fisheries and biodiversity conservation in the Western Atlantic and Caribbean; Bay of Bengal; Western and Central Pacific; and the Eastern Pacific regions.

New York Declaration on Forests Pledges to Halt Natural Forest Loss by 2030 [viewed]

United Nations23 September 2014: The 'New York Declaration on Forests', as announced at the Climate Summit 2014, pledges to halve the rate of deforestation by 2020, halt the loss of natural forests by 2030, and restore 350 million hectares of degraded areas. Twenty-seven developed and developing countries, 34 companies, 16 indigenous peoples' organizations, and 45 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society organizations (CSOs) have endorsed the Declaration.

Equator Prizes Awarded to 26 Local and Indigenous Leaders [viewed]

World Bank-GEF Project Will Triple Brazil's MPAs [viewed]

World Bank - GEF19 September 2014: The World Bank Board of Directors approved a Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Project that will increase the area of Brazil's oceans under protection, from 5.5 million to 17.5 million hectares. The Global Environment Facility (GEF) financed project is expected to benefit 43 million coastal inhabitants through economic, environmental and social benefits that will improve local livelihoods.
