Denmark, Estonia Ratify Supplementary Biosafety Protocol [viewed]

CBD9 March 2015: Denmark and Estonia are the latest countries to ratify the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. Their accession brings the total number of ratifications to 30, which is 75% of the ratifications necessary for the Supplementary Protocol's entry into force.

CBD Secretariat Calls for Input on New and Emerging Issues, Climate Change-Related Matters [viewed]

CBD17 February 2015: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has issued a series of notifications calling for views and information on new and emerging issues to be considered by the CBD Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA), the potential impacts of geoengineering on biodiversity, and other climate change-related activities, including experiences with ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.

Event: Caribbean Sub-regional Capacity-Building Workshop on Mainstreaming Biosafety into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans and Resource Mobilization [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this workshop aims to enhance the capacity of Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety from the Caribbean Region to integrate biosafety concerns into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). The second objective of the workshop is to build Parties' capacity to identify and mobilize resources for implementation. Participants will also address: the Protocol's status of implementation in the Caribbean; the Protocol's Strategic Plan 2011-2020 and the CBD Aichi Biodiversity Targets and their implementation in the region; public awareness, education and participation concerning living modified organisms (LMOs); and ratification and implementation of the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress.

CBD, WHO Report Discusses How Biodiversity Protection Benefits Human Health [viewed]

CBD13 February 2015: The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have produced a report on biodiversity and health that shows the significant contribution of biodiversity and ecosystem services to improved human health. The report, titled ‘Connecting Global Priorities: Biodiversity and Human Health,' which was launched during the 14th World Congress on Public Health, in Calcutta, India, outlines the ways that the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity positively impact human health.

CBD Secretariat Initiates Preparations for Working Group on Article 8(j) [viewed]

CBD5 February 2015: In preparation for the ninth meeting of the Working Group on Article 8(j) (traditional knowledge) and related provisions, tentatively planned for November 2015, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has issued a notification calling for input from Parties, indigenous peoples and local communities, and relevant organizations on several items, including on repatriation of traditional knowledge, prior informed consent (PIC), and fair and equitable sharing of benefits from the use of traditional knowledge.
