Event: CBD Business and Biodiversity Forum 2015 [viewed]

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Business & Biodiversity Forum 2015 will convene under the theme, 'Practices, Solutions and the Way Forward'. The forum is aimed at broadening the knowledge of the central role corporations play in protecting biodiversity and deepening companies' understanding of business opportunities connected to biodiversity and the risks associated with biodiversity loss. The event will gather biodiversity specialists working for corporations from around the world to exchange knowledge of companies' latest practices on business and biodiversity. The forum will present various examples of business solutions from the agriculture, forestry, mining and oil industries; discuss financing mechanisms for biodiversity; and address the role of biodiversity in supply chain management.

CBD Secretariat Releases Workshop Report on Detection and Identification of LMOs [viewed]

CBDOctober 2015: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released the report of a workshop of the Network of Laboratories for the Detection and Identification of Living Modified Organisms (LMOs), which made recommendations for capacity-building workshops, the development of technical tools and guidance, and other activities to support Parties in the sampling, detection and identification of LMOs.

UNEP-WCMC Develops Guidance on Experimental Biodiversity Accounting [viewed]

Unep-Wcmc30 September 2015: The UN Environment Programme-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) has developed technical guidance on experimental biodiversity accounting to address the gap in accounting knowledge, given that accounting for the variable components of biodiversity is complex and less advanced than for water or carbon accounting.

Heads of Eight IOs Commit to "Integrated Solutions" [viewed]

joint_action_achieve_sdg26 September 2015: Eight international organizations committed to coordinated action to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, addressing a high-level side event on the sidelines of the UN Sustainable Development Summit. The high-level event resulted in a joint call for action, in which the heads of the eight organizations say they are ready to step up collective efforts to support Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) implementation, and commit themselves to engaging in multi-stakeholder partnership approaches and working across regions and on multiple levels, from local to global.

Nagoya Protocol on ABS Reaches 66 Ratifications [viewed]

CBD28 September 2015: Eleven countries have ratified the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) since its entry into force on 12 October 2014. The Protocol currently counts 66 ratifications.

Equator Prize Announces 2015 Winners [viewed]

equatorinitiative21 September 2015: The 21 winning initiatives of the 2015 Equator Prize include a indigenous group in Brazil that inspired the film 'Avatar'; a conservation group in Indonesia that is saving sea turtles; a movement for pygmy rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo; and a community-based organization in the poorest region of Afghanistan that is restoring areas affected by conflict and creating new jobs. The prize is the "flagship programme" of the Equator Initiative, a partnership that brings together the UN, governments, civil society, businesses and grassroots organizations to advance sustainable development solutions.

Event: Pan African Business and Biodiversity Forum [viewed]

To help advance a development strategy that values natural capital in Africa, the Pan-African Business and Biodiversity Forum will initiate dialogues in four thematic areas: extractive industries, sustainable agriculture, energy-nature nexus and natural capital accounting. Furthermore, the Forum will promote intra- and inter-sectoral collaborations among key stakeholders. A road map for the establishment of National and Sub-regional Business and Biodiversity Networks will also be launched.

Event: CBD Business and Biodiversity Regional Meeting [viewed]

In conjunction with the upcoming VIII Brazilian Congress on Protected Areas, which will convene from 21-25 September 2015, in Curitiba, Brazil, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Secretariat, in collaboration with the Brazilian Business and Biodiversity Platform and the Boticario Foundation, will host a series of business and biodiversity related meetings. The themes for these meetings include a discussion on natural capital, an investigation of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and their relation to various business sectors, and finally a discussion among the regional initiatives in Latin America of the Global Partnership regarding future directions and ways to enhance collaboration.

Event: A Call for Joint Action to Achieve the SDGs: Advancing Integrated Solutions to Accelerate Change [viewed]

This Ministerial and Stakeholders Action Platform is organized by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and other partners on the margins of the UN Sustainable Development Summit. This high-level event will provide a platform to focus international attention on the role of multi-stakeholder partnerships in achieving collective impact through agenda-setting, policy change, communications and on-the-ground implementation. It will consider clusters for innovative partnerships such as: i) building capacities for innovation, for promotion of sustainable consumption and production (SCP) patterns and for green and inclusive growth; ii) breaking the silos: building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions and implementing partnerships at national and local levels for sustainable development; and iii) mainstreaming biodiversity: restoring and sustaining healthy ecosystems for people and planet. An outcome of this event will be a call for joint action by the co-organizers of the event that gives expression to the key messages of and will be presented during the event.

CBD Launches Manual on Tourism and Biodiversity [viewed]

The manual aims to support the integration of biodiversity conservation and management into sustainable tourism development, and to support the implementation of the CBD Guidelines on Biodiversity and Tourism Development.
