ITPGR Reports on its Sixth Governing Body, CBD Highlights Outcomes of Relevance [viewed]

ITPGR CBD19 January 2016: The report of the sixth session of the Governing Body (GB 6) of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) has been made available online. Given the close linkages between the ITPGR, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS), the CBD Secretariat has issued a notification highlighting some of the GB 6 outcomes that are of particular relevance to the CBD and the Nagoya Protocol.

Nagoya Protocol on ABS Reaches 70 Ratifications [viewed]

CBD15 January 2016: Following the recent accessions by Djibouti, Lesotho, Pakistan, the Philippines and Slovakia, the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has reached 70 ratifications.

Event: ASEAN Conference on Biodiversity 2016: Biodiversity for Sustainable Development [viewed]

The ASEAN Conference on Biodiversity 2016 will focus on the theme, ‘Biodiversity for Sustainable Development'. The conference will discuss the Association of Southeast Asian Nations' (ASEAN) progress on implementing their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, including identification of areas where additional efforts are needed to achieve the Aichi Targets. Over 500 participants are expected to share their experiences in meeting the targets and showcase innovative policies and practices. The meeting will also discuss: access and benefit sharing (ABS); climate change and biodiversity; health and biodiversity; and financing for biodiversity conservation in the ASEAN region, including through the ASEAN Biodiversity Fund. It will include a soft launch of the Second Edition of the ASEAN Biodiversity Outlook, which will provide a mid-term report on the progress of ASEAN member States on the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. The conference will also include a ‘Business and Biodiversity Forum' with representatives from the private sector discussing the link between business and biodiversity.

Event: Central and Eastern European Workshop on the Detection and Identification of Living Modified Organisms [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this workshop will discuss issues and challenges relating to the detection and identification of living modified organisms (LMOs) for the implementation of obligations under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety for Parties from the Central and Eastern European Region.

Event: Africa Regional Capacity-Building Workshop on Mainstreaming Biosafety into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this workshop aims to review the status of implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety in the African Region. Participants will also discuss: tools, strategies and opportunities to integrate biosafety concerns into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and national development plans; strategies for mobilizing additional resources for implementation; and measures to implement the Nagoya - Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress and potential challenges to the ratification of the Supplementary Protocol.

Event: Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group on Risk Assessment and Risk Management [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Risk Assessment and Risk Management will review comments submitted by Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety on the Guidance on Risk Assessment and Management and prepare text-based suggestions for changes to the Guidance. Participants will also update background documentation for the Guidance.

COP 21 Starts Substantive Negotiations [viewed]

CBD Secretariat Reports on Priority Actions to Achieve Aichi Target on Coral Reefs [viewed]

aichi_biodiversityNovember 2015: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released a report, titled ‘Priority Actions to Achieve Aichi Biodiversity Target 10 for Coral Reefs and Closely Associated Ecosystems.' By 2015, Aichi Target 10 aims to minimize anthropogenic pressures on coral reefs and other vulnerable ecosystems impacted by climate change or ocean acidification, to maintain their integrity and function.

CBD AHTEG Report Proposes Operational Definition of Synthetic Biology [viewed]

CBD10 November 2015: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released the report of the Ad hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Synthetic Biology. The report considers, among other issues, potential benefits and adverse impacts of organisms that are products of synthetic biology for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use. The report contains a proposed operational definition of synthetic biology, an illustrative list of potential benefits and adverse impacts, and other AHTEG recommendations to the CBD Conference of the Parties (COP).
