UNEP15 December 2014: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has circulated, at the request of the Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), an invitation to review and comment on one of the initial outputs of a project implemented by UNEP on 'Improving the effectiveness of and cooperation among biodiversity-related conventions and exploring opportunities for further synergies.'

Gangwon Declaration Presented to UN Secretary-General for Transmittal to UNGA [viewed]

CBD11 December 2014: The Minister of Environment of the Republic of Korea has presented to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon the three major outcomes of the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12) on the role of biodiversity for sustainable development, for transmittal to the 69th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

Event: CBD Regional Workshop on EBSAs in the North-West Indian Ocean and Adjacent Gulf Areas, and Training Session on EBSAs [viewed]

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is convening this Regional Workshop to 'Facilitate the Description of Ecologically or Biologically Significant Marine Areas (EBSAs) in the North-West Indian Ocean and Adjacent Gulf Areas'. The workshop will be hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Water of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and is being convened in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Office West Asia (ROWA) and the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) Office – Abu Dhabi, among others.

COP 20 Panel Discusses Land-Based Adaptation Indicator [viewed]

limacop2011 December 2014: Participants focused on the linkages between adaptation and sustainable land and ecosystem management as well as monitoring progress in these areas at an event organized by the Government of China and supported by the Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The side event, titled 'Building a Common Indicator on Land-Based Adaptation for Reporting on the Rio Conventions,' was co-convened with the Governments of Costa Rica, France, Morocco, Myanmar, Panama and Senegal on the sidelines of the Lima Climate Change Conference.

Scientists Call for Recognition of Biodiversity in Climate Negotiations [viewed]

cbd-iai5 December 2014: A declaration prepared by a group of scientists calls for better integration of biodiversity concerns into climate change politics and negotiations. Scientists and policymakers presented the declaration to Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, Peru's Environment Minister and president of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC. The declaration asks climate change policymakers to take biodiversity into account while also recognizing the role scientists must play in providing timely information to policymakers.

GBIF Announces 2015 Ebbe Nielsen Challenge [viewed]

CBD Holds Final Consultations on State of Knowledge on Biodiversity and Human Health [viewed]

WHO CBDNovember 2014: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has conducted the final consultation for the publication, ‘Connecting Global Priorities: Biodiversity and Human Health: A State of Knowledge Review.' The consultation took place at the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) World Parks Congress, which convened in Sydney, Australia, from 12-19 November 2014. The publication will be the culmination of a joint CBD and World Health Organization (WHO) work program on biodiversity and human health.
