Seychelles Fourth Country to Ratify ABS Protocol [viewed]

27 April 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has reported that, on 20 April 2012, Seychelles became the fourth country to ratify the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the CBD.

Event: CBD Workshop on Financing Mechanisms for Biodiversity: Examining Opportunities and Challenges [viewed]

This workshop is being convened by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Global Environment Fund (GEF), among others, in association with the co-chairs from India and Sweden of the Quito informal Dialogue Seminar on Scaling up Finance for Biodiversity held from 6-9 March 2012. The aim is to build on the Quito discussions and related discussions in the fourth meeting of the CBD Working Group on Review of Implementation, to examine in further depth the salient issues associated with biodiversity finance mechanisms, and to explore what are the most promising avenues for effectively scaling up finance for biodiversity.

Four Botanical Institutions to Create First Online World Flora [viewed]

23 April 2012: Four members of the Global Partnership for Plant Conservation, which aims to support the implementation of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation adopted by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), have announced plans to develop the World Flora, the first online catalog of the world's plants, to be made available by 2020.

UNGA, UN Secretary-General, and CBD Mark International Mother Earth Day [viewed]

22 April 2012: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) hosted an interactive dialogue on harmony with nature to commemorate International Mother Earth Day and to inform ongoing preparations for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). Officials also offered statements on the Day itself to stress respect for nature, the importance of the UNCSD, and the role of indigenous and local communities (ILCs).

Event: CBD Workshop for Indigenous and Local Communities of the African Region [viewed]

This regional workshop aims to increase the number of indigenous and local community (ILC) representatives, with an emphasis on women, effectively involved in the CBD processes, as well as to build their capacity to do so. This sub-regional workshop will focus on Articles 8(j) (traditional knowledge), 10(c)(customary sustainable use), and related provisions, as well as the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit-sharing, and aims at preparing ILC representatives for the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties, which will be held in Hyderabad, India, from 8-19 October 2012.

Event: Cultural and Biological Informal Diversity Liaison Group Meeting [viewed]

The objective of the first meeting of the Diversity Liaison Group is to assess advances made since the launch of the UNESCO/CBD joint programme of work on biological and cultural diversity in October 2010, and to provide advice on possible steps forward, including on priority focus areas for the joint programme and possible deliverables for CBD COP-11, and the conceptual framework for and structure and content of the global knowledge platform on the links between biological and cultural diversity to be launched at CBD COP-11.
