Event: CBD Online Forum on Meaning, Scope and Importance of Public Access to Biosafety Information [viewed]

This online discussion group is organized as part of the Convention on Biological Diversity's (CBD) Online Forum on Public Awareness, Education and Participation Concerning the Safe Transfer, Handling and Use of Living Modified Organisms (LMOs). The discussion group aims to facilitate exchange of views and information regarding the meaning, scope and importance of public access to information on biosafety in the context of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. It will address the following themes: meaning and scope of public access to information; public right to information; and the rationale/importance of public access to biosafety information. Parties, other governments and relevant organizations are invited to nominate individuals involved in, or responsible for, promoting public awareness, education and participation at the national level to participate in the Forum.

Event: Fair on National Experiences with the Implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety [viewed]

Organized jointly by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Government of India, this fair will be held at the margins of of the sixth meeting of the CBD Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (COP-MOP 6). It will provide Parties, other Governments and relevant organizations with the opportunity to showcase their national experiences, good practices and lessons learned on various topics, including: national implementation of the Strategic Plan for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (2011-2020); development and implementation of National Biosafety Frameworks; design and implementation of biosafety capacity-building activities; use of the Biosafety Clearing-House; and implementation of the programme of work on public awareness, education and participation concerning the safe transfer, handling and use of living modified organisms (2011-2015).

“Small Islands, Big Difference” Campaign Launched at SBSTTA 16 [viewed]

22 May 2012:  The NGO Island Conservation has launched a global campaign called “Small Islands, Big Difference.” The campaign aims to prevent the extinction of vulnerable native species and support human livelihoods on islands by removing invasive alien vertebrates. Island Conservation hopes the campaign will increase financial support for island nations and nations with islands to eradicate invasive alien species. The campaign was launched in Montreal, Canada, in May 2012.

International Biodiversity Day 2012 Celebrates Marine Biodiversity [viewed]

22 May 2012: Celebrated on 22 May 2012, the theme for this year's International Day for Biological Diversity was marine biodiversity. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon marked the day by highlighting the fragile state of the world's oceans, and urging greater protection for marine biodiversity.

Event: CBD Capacity-building Workshop on the GTI to Address IAS and to Achieve Aichi Biodiversity Targets in East and South East Asia [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in collaboration with the Government of Thailand, this workshop aims to build capacity to address invasive alien species (IAS) and to support implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, including the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, in order to integrate activities related to the Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI), as needed, into national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) in East and South East Asia.

CBD Seeks Views on Interaction with IPBES [viewed]
