Event: Webinar on Increasing Awareness of Soil Biodiversity and Carbon [viewed]

This webinar, titled “Learning from wetlands – the case for dry soils,” is being convened by the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in collaboration with the Ramsar Convention Secretariat and Wetlands International. It aims to build knowledge and expand the understanding of policy and scientific issues related to reducing emissions from soil carbon based on lessons learned from peatlands and other wetlands. The webinar will address topics, such as: building scientific knowledge on soil carbon; establishing policy and regulatory frameworks; and implementing projects and programmes for reducing emissions. The webinar is targeted towards Focal Points, national biodiversity managers, sustainable land management (SLM) experts and other technical specialists in Africa. Outcomes include the identification of priority actions to enhance the consideration of soil biodiversity and carbon for implementing the CBD. Those who are interested should register before 6 February 2015.

Event: CBD Webinar: Conservation When Nothing Stands Still: Dryland Cases [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), presented by Joseph Bull of the Imperial College London, and targeted towards national focal points and other technical specialists, this webinar will focus on how to manage biodiversity that is dynamic and in motion (such as migratory species or habitats undergoing rapid change), and the policy relevance of this concept. The nineteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 19) and the ninth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will be held back-to-back. SBSTTA 19 will convene from 2-5 November. The Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions of the CBD will convene from 4-7 November.

The ‘Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization' to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has been hailed as a giant step towards the implementation of the third objective of the CBD: the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources, including by appropriate access to them. Implementing this third objective will contribute, it is hoped, to the conservation of biological diversity and the sustainable use of its components, the other two objectives of the CBD.

Policy Update #7: A New International Instrument Enters into Force: The First Meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing [viewed]

The Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) entered into force on 12 October 2014, with 54 ratifications at the time.[1] In accordance with the provisions of its Article 26(6), the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties (COP/MOP 1) to the Nagoya Protocol was held from 13-17 October 2014, during the second week of the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the CBD.

ICLEI-CBC Releases Report on Biodiversity Summit 2014 [viewed]

iclei-cbc6 January 2015: Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) - Cities Biodiversity Center (CBC) released the report of the 2014 Cities and Subnational Governments Biodiversity Summit. The Summit was held in Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea, in parallel to the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12).

Event: International Day for Biological Diversity 2015 [viewed]

The UN proclaimed 22 May the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The theme for the 2015 Day will be 'Biodiversity for Sustainable Development' to reflect the importance of efforts made to establish a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the UN post-2015 development agenda for the period of 2015-2030 and the relevance of biodiversity for the achievement of sustainable development. The selection of the theme also underlines the adoption of the Gangwon Declaration at the High-level Segment of the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
