Event: CBD Business and Biodiversity Regional Meeting [viewed]

In conjunction with the upcoming VIII Brazilian Congress on Protected Areas, which will convene from 21-25 September 2015, in Curitiba, Brazil, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Secretariat, in collaboration with the Brazilian Business and Biodiversity Platform and the Boticario Foundation, will host a series of business and biodiversity related meetings. The themes for these meetings include a discussion on natural capital, an investigation of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and their relation to various business sectors, and finally a discussion among the regional initiatives in Latin America of the Global Partnership regarding future directions and ways to enhance collaboration.

Event: A Call for Joint Action to Achieve the SDGs: Advancing Integrated Solutions to Accelerate Change [viewed]

This Ministerial and Stakeholders Action Platform is organized by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and other partners on the margins of the UN Sustainable Development Summit. This high-level event will provide a platform to focus international attention on the role of multi-stakeholder partnerships in achieving collective impact through agenda-setting, policy change, communications and on-the-ground implementation. It will consider clusters for innovative partnerships such as: i) building capacities for innovation, for promotion of sustainable consumption and production (SCP) patterns and for green and inclusive growth; ii) breaking the silos: building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions and implementing partnerships at national and local levels for sustainable development; and iii) mainstreaming biodiversity: restoring and sustaining healthy ecosystems for people and planet. An outcome of this event will be a call for joint action by the co-organizers of the event that gives expression to the key messages of and will be presented during the event.

CBD Launches Manual on Tourism and Biodiversity [viewed]

tourism_supporting_biodiversity3 July 2015: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has launched 'Tourism Supporting Biodiversity: A Manual on applying the CBD Guidelines on Biodiversity and Tourism Development.' The manual aims to support the integration of biodiversity conservation and management into sustainable tourism development, and to support the implementation of the CBD Guidelines on Biodiversity and Tourism Development.

Greater Efforts Needed to Reach CBD 2020 Targets on Biodiversity Awareness [viewed]

GFCM Proclaims Day Against IUU Fishing; CBD Notifies on Underwater Noise and EBSAs [viewed]

cms-cbd-faoJune 2015: On the occasion of its thirty-ninth annual session, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) adopted four binding recommendations setting emergency measures for small pelagic fisheries in the Adriatic Sea, standards for bottom trawling demersal fisheries in the Strait of Sicily, and measures to ensure sustainable fisheries management and to deter illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in the Black Sea. Members of the GFCM also proclaimed 24 April of each year as “International day against IUU fishing.”

Monaco Assessment Calls for Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for Antarctica and the Southern Ocean [viewed]

monaco10 June 2015: A meeting of biodiversity experts and other key actors has examined the extent to which conservation in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean is achieving targets under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. Participants at the meeting adopted the 'The Monaco Assessment Declaration,' which notes that a "Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, adopted and implemented by the Antarctic Treaty Parties, and broadly accepted by all, would provide an effective means to improve the outlook for the region."

CBD Secretariat Analyzes Status of Biodiversity in Post-2015 Zero Draft [viewed]

CBD19 June 2015: As an annex to a notification dated 19 June 2015, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has circulated an 'Analysis of the Status of Biodiversity in the Zero draft of the outcome document for the UN Summit to adopt the Post- 2015 Development Agenda.' The analysis highlights the extent to which the role of biodiversity for sustainable development is included in the zero draft, how the proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relate to the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, and how national-level commitments might relate to the global aspirations of the SDGs.

CBD Secretariat Releases Report of the Twelfth Meeting of Biosafety Protocol Compliance Committee [viewed]

CBD16 June 2015: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released the report of the twelfth session of the Compliance Committee of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, including the Committee's assessment of the outcomes of the seventh Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol (COP-MOP 7), its review of compliance based on information from the Biosafety Clearing-house (BCH), and the Committee's input to the third assessment and review of the Protocol and the mid-term review of its Strategic Plan 2011-2020.

CBD15 June 2015: A notification by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Secretariat lays out the modalities and procedures for granting an award to parties that have made the most significant progress in establishing or further developing their national clearing-house mechanisms (CHM) between meetings of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the CBD.
