ICLEI CBC Launches Project on Conservation in African Urban Environments [viewed]

iclei17 October 2014: At an event on the margins of the 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12), ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Center (CBC) and partners, including the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), launched 'Urban Natural Assets for Africa' (UNA Africa). The project, which will support local implementation of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets in sub-Saharan African cities, will be implemented under the Urban Biosphere Initiative (URBIS).

Event: Regional Workshop for NENA countries on Capacity Development to Support National Drought Management Policies [viewed]

The UN-Water Initiative is organizing a regional workshop for the Near East and North Africa (NENA) countries under its ‘Capacity Development to Support Drought Management Policies' Initiative. The initiative aims to increase the capacity of developing countries and countries in transition to develop risk-based national drought management policies. UN-Water and its partners are holding a series of regional workshops in drought-prone regions in 2013 and 2014, which will culminate in a final, international conference. The workshop is co-organized with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

CBD Secretariat to Provide Guidance on Sustainable Wildlife Management [viewed]

CBD21 October 2014: Mandated by the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the CBD Secretariat will be cooperating with the Collaborative Partnership on Sustainable Wildlife Management to prepare technical guidance on the role of sustainable wildlife management in the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, and prepare an analysis of the impacts of 'subsistence use' of wildlife on the survival and regeneration of wild species, as well as support Parties in developing and implementing integrated sustainable wildlife management programmes.

CBD COP 12 Adopts Decisions on Marine and Coastal Biodiversity [viewed]

cop12-biodiv17 October 2014: The twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12) adopted two decisions related to marine and coastal biodiversity: one on ecologically or biologically significant marine areas (EBSAs); and one on other matters, including impacts of anthropogenic underwater noise and ocean acidification, priority actions to achieve Aichi Target 10 (coral reefs), and marine spatial planning (MSP) and training initiatives.

cop1217 October 2014: Held from 6-17 October 2014, in Pyeongchang, the Republic of Korea, the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted a series of decisions, including the 'Pyeongchang roadmap for the enhanced implementation of the Strategic Plan and achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets,' addressing resource mobilization, capacity building, scientific and technical cooperation, linking biodiversity and poverty eradication, and monitoring implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020.

cop12-biodiv17 October 2014: Held from 13-17 October 2014 in Pyeongchang, the Republic of Korea, during the second week of the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the first meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (NP COP/MOP 1) marked the entry into force of the Nagoya Protocol on 12 October 2014, and adopted a series of decisions to facilitate its effective implementation, including on the Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS) Clearing-house and on compliance.
