Event: UNGA Dialogue on Harmony with Nature [viewed]

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) will host an inclusive, interactive dialogue on the theme, ‘Harmony with Nature: Towards achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) including addressing climate change in the post-2015 development agenda' in commemoration of Mother Earth Day. The dialogue will: provide an opportunity to reflect on the relationship between humanity and nature; promote the understanding of the Harmony with Nature paradigm; examine how Harmony with Nature can contribute to achievement of the SDGs; and provide examples on how society would need to function to be consistent with a Harmony with Nature paradigm. The dialogue will include an opening segment and multi-stakeholder panel discussions and will result in an UNGA President's summary.

UN Crime Congress Calls for Justice for All, Action on Wildlife, Forest Crime [viewed]

crime_congress19 April 2015: Participants unanimously adopted the Doha Declaration at the 13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, stressing justice for all as critical to the success of the post-2015 development agenda and to fighting criminal activities, terrorism and violence globally. In addition to making recommendations to be submitted to the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice convening in May 2015, the Congress lent special focus to the issues of wildlife and forest crime.

Event: 13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice [viewed]

The 13th UN Crime Congress will convene under the theme ‘Integrating crime prevention and criminal justice into the wider UN agenda to address social and economic challenges and to promote the rule of law at the national and international levels, and public participation.' Participants will discuss: the links between crime prevention, security, justice and sustainable development; successes and challenges in implementation of policies and strategies for preventing crime and criminal justice in order to strengthen the rule of law and support sustainable development; international cooperation to prevent, combat and respond to transnational organized crime; and national approaches to public participation in strengthening crime prevention and criminal justice. The event will also feature side events, including on wildlife and forest crime. The Congress is expected to adopt the ‘Doha Declaration,' which will contain recommendations for the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in May 2015.

ICP-16 Expresses Support for Oceans SDG, Discusses Integration of Sustainable Development [viewed]

ICP_16_iisdrs_coverage10 April 2015: The 16th Meeting of the UN Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea (ICP-16) discussed proposed Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 on oceans and seas and its implementation, and reflected on the utility of the Consultative Process in the evolution of the international oceans agenda. ICP-16 resulted in a Co-Chairs' summary of discussions.

UNGA Dialogue Highlights Role of Water in Development, Peace and Security [viewed]

International Decade WATER for Life30 March 2015: Water is among the highest priorities for development and for peace and security, agreed participants at the High-Level Interactive Dialogue on the International Decade for Action ‘Water for Life,' 2005-2015, convened by the President of the UN General Assembly. The event reviewed progress in the implementation of the Decade, evaluated progress in fostering cooperation on water issues and discussed ways to apply lessons from the Decade to the post-2015 development agenda.

UN Marks International Day of Forests with Special Session [viewed]

PFII Collects Input on WCIP Follow-up [viewed]

Unpfii10 March 2015: The UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII) launched a questionnaire to collect indigenous peoples' input on the follow-up to the 2014 World Conference on Indigenous Peoples (WCIP), in particular the development of the System-Wide Action Plan to ensure a coherent approach of the UN system to achieve the ends of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and the preparation of the report of the UN Secretary-General requested in the WCIP outcome document. The deadline for responses is 6 April 2015.

Event: High-level Interactive Dialogue on Water for Life [viewed]

The President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), in cooperation with UN Water, will convene a High-level Interactive Dialogue on the theme, ‘The International Decade for Action: Progress achieved and lessons learned relevant to the achievement of sustainable development'. The dialogue will review progress achieved and gaps in the implementation of the Decade for Action, ‘Water for Life, 2005-2015,' and will reflect on lessons learned that can contribute to a comprehensive approach to sustainable management of water and sanitation in the post-2015 development agenda.

The event will feature a plenary segment and a high-level, interactive, multi-stakeholder panel discussion on the theme, ‘Carrying lessons learned from the Decade into the post-2015 development agenda'. The event will result in a President's summary that will be circulated to Member States and other stakeholders.

Member States Seek to "Break with the Past" in Post-2015 Declaration [viewed]

photo_post2015_in220 February 2015: The second session of the intergovernmental negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda focused on the declaration component of the outcome that will be adopted at the Summit of Heads of State and Government on the post-2015 development agenda in September 2015. A summary of the discussion will be produced by the Secretariat, for reference, while the “discussion document” circulated and discussed during the meeting remains “a document without status” but will assist in creating the zero draft of the Summit outcome, according to the Co-Facilitators.

Event: 16th Meeting of the UN Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea [viewed]

The 16th meeting of the United Nations Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea will convene from 6-10 April 2015. The Consultative Process is intended to facilitate the annual review by the General Assembly of developments in ocean affairs and the law of the sea by considering the Secretary-General's report on oceans and the law of the sea and by suggesting particular issues to be considered by the General Assembly, with an emphasis on identifying areas where coordination and cooperation at the intergovernmental and inter-agency levels should be enhanced.
