Governments Conclude Consultations on WCIP Outcome Document [viewed]

wcip15 September 2014: The draft outcome document of the forthcoming World Conference on Indigenous Peoples (WCIP) commits participating Heads of State and Government to give "due consideration to all the rights of indigenous peoples" in the elaboration of the post-2015 development agenda. The draft outcome document is the result of consultations among UN Member States, chaired by Andrej Logar, Slovenia, and Marjon Kamara, Liberia, which concluded on 12 September 2014.

SIDS Conference Concludes with 297 Partnerships, Adoption of Outcome Document [viewed]

Samoa Partnerships Commitment4 September 2014: The Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) took place from 1-4 September 2014, in Apia, Samoa, on the theme of ‘The Sustainable Development of SIDS Through Genuine and Durable Partnerships.' The Conference produced an outcome document, titled ‘SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway,' which was negotiated during the preparatory process at UN Headquarters in New York, US, and adopted during the closing plenary.

Event: Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD) [viewed]

The Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD) will take place on 13-16 July 2015, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The conference will be held at the highest possible political level, including Heads of State or Government, relevant ministers – ministers for finance, foreign affairs and development cooperation – and other special representatives. The conference will result both in an intergovernmentally negotiated and agreed outcome and in summaries of the plenary meetings and other deliberations of the Conference, to be included in the report of the Conference.

The Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD) will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 13-16 July 2015. According to UN General Assembly Resolution 68/279, the first draft of the outcome document will be prepared by the co-facilitators on the basis of informal consultations, taking into account inputs from Member States, and presented by February 2015. The Preparatory Process as outlined in the road map issued by the co-facilitators in October 2014 will include three drafting sessions on the outcome document. The first drafting session will take place on 27-29 January 2015.

UN Watercourses Convention Enters into Force [viewed]

United Nations17 August 2014: The UN Convention on the Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses (UN Watercourses Convention) entered into force on 17 August 2014, with the 35th ratification of the Convention by Viet Nam in May 2014. The Convention, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on 21 May 1997, is the only global agreement addressing the 276 transboundary freshwater lakes and rivers worldwide.

UNFF Provides Background Note on Proposed SDGs [viewed]

UnffJuly 2014: In a background note, the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) reports that, "The agreement by the Open Working Group (OWG) on the proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a positive step forward towards an effective and stronger post 2015 development agenda and the post 2015 International Arrangement on Forests." Forests and their multiple functions are directly addressed under Proposed Goals 15 and 6.

CBD Reacts to Recognition of Biodiversity in SDG Proposal [viewed]

CBD25 July 2014: Biodiversity and ecosystems are included throughout the 17 goals and 169 targets proposed by the Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The CBD describes the OWG's final outcome as “extremely positive from the perspective of the CBD and the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets,” noting the agreement sets the stage for better links between the implementation of the CBD's agenda and the post-2015 development agenda.
