For ten years negotiators in New York have been debating, under the aegis of the UN General Assembly, the need for a new international agreement to protect biodiversity in the deep seas. A final decision is expected by the end of 2015, following key negotiations on 20-23 January 2015 on the feasibility, scope and parameters of a new treaty.

UN General Assembly Resolution Links Sustainable Tourism, Conservation and Development [viewed]

UNWTO14 January 2015: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a resolution (A/RES/69/233) recognizing the contribution of sustainable tourism to poverty eradication, community development and the protection of biodiversity. The resolution, titled 'Promotion of sustainable tourism, including ecotourism, for poverty eradication and environment protection,' calls on the UN to promote sustainable tourism as a tool for achieving global development goals.

Gangwon Declaration Presented to UN Secretary-General for Transmittal to UNGA [viewed]

CBD11 December 2014: The Minister of Environment of the Republic of Korea has presented to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon the three major outcomes of the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12) on the role of biodiversity for sustainable development, for transmittal to the 69th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

UNGA Adopts Sustainable Fisheries Resolution, Defers Text on Oceans and UNCLOS [viewed]

unga699 December 2014: The 69th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution on sustainable fisheries that calls on States to assess and address the impacts of climate change and ocean acidification on fish stocks and habitats. The UNGA deferred action on a draft text on oceans and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Human Rights Council Appoints 2nd Special Rapporteur on Human Right to Water and Sanitation [viewed]

OHCHRDecember 2014: The UN Human Rights Council appointed Léo Heller as the second Special Rapporteur on the human right to water and sanitation in November 2014. Heller replaces Catarina de Albuquerque, who served from 2008-2014.

Event: Intergovernmental Negotiations on Post-2015 Development Agenda - Third Session [viewed]

The third session of intergovernmental negotiations on post-2015 development agenda will take place on 23-27 March 2015, and focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and targets. The Draft Programme is available, and the co-facilitators provided "clarifications" on the programme of work on 17 March, as follows: on Monday, 23 March, the morning session will include a presentation from the UN Statistical Commission on preliminary global indicators; on Tuesday, 24 March, the afternoon session will include presentations by Member States on examples of approaches to implementing the SDGs at national level; on Friday, 27 March, the morning session will include a discussion of themes for the interactive dialogues during the post-2015 summit; and on Friday, 27 March, the afternoon session may include a discussion of issues related to coordination with the Financing for Development process, such as a technology facilitation mechanism.

Second Committee Discusses Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition [viewed]

unga6928 October 2014: The UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Second Committee (Economic and Financial) discussed Agriculture development, food security and nutrition, beginning with an introduction to this year's report of the UN Secretary-General on the topic (A/69/279). Nikhil Seth, UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), highlighted the importance of food security, nutrition and sustainable agriculture in the post-2015 development agenda.
