OWG Co-Chairs Compile 19 'Focus Areas' [viewed]

owg21 February 2014: The Co-Chairs of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have assembled a list of 19 'Focus Areas' for consideration by Member States as they seek to identify SDGs and accompanying targets. In a letter accompanying the Focus Areas, released on 21 February 2014, Macharia Kamau (Kenya) and Csaba Kőrösi (Hungary) write that further action in these areas is necessary to build "prosperous, peaceful and resilient societies that also protect the planet."

UNGA Debates Water, Sanitation and Sustainable Energy [viewed]

UNGA19 February 2014: In a thematic debate of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), governments, NGOs and technical experts addressed water, sanitation and sustainable energy, which UNGA President John Ashe called the “pre-eminent development challenges of our world.” They particularly considered the “nexus” or interlinkages among these issues and whether this is a useful basis for their inclusion in the post-2015 development agenda.

UN Security Council Sanctions Target Groups Financed through Poaching and Illegal Trade in Wildlife [viewed]

UNGA President Releases Concept Note on Water, Sanitation, Energy [viewed]

United Nations14 January 2014: The Office of the President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) has released concept notes for three high-level events and three thematic debates that UNGA President John Ashe will host to encourage consensus building and concrete action on implementation of the post-2015 development agenda. The ‘Water, sanitation and sustainable energy' concept note describes universal access to safe drinking water, basic sanitation and modern energy services as “one of the greatest multifaceted development challenges” facing the world.
