Major Groups and Stakeholders Forward Input to First UNEA Meeting [viewed]

unea23 June 2014: Ahead of the first session of the UN Environment Assembly of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF) met to facilitate the preparations of Major Groups and Stakeholders towards the first UNEA, allowing them to discuss the main UNEA themes and to prepare their input to UNEA. UNEA will hold its first session on 23-27 June to discuss ‘Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the post-2015 development agenda, including sustainable consumption and production (SCP).' The session will also address illegal trade in wildlife and related environmental crime.

UNGA Elects Sam Kutesa of Uganda as 69th UNGA President [viewed]

UNGA11 June 2014: The UN General Assembly elected Sam Kahamba Kutesa of Uganda as President of its 69th session. Remarking on his election, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and current UNGA President John Ashe underscored the 69th session as a critical time for the UN in elaborating the post-2015 development agenda.

World Oceans Day Celebrated Globally [viewed]

World Oceans Day8 June 2014: The UN commemorated World Oceans Day on 8 June 2014, under the theme, 'Together we have the power to protect the ocean!' The Day also lent special attention to the designation of 2014 as the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and fell on the 20th anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

OWG Co-Chairs Issue Zero Draft with 17 SDGs [viewed]

owg2 June 2014: The Co-Chairs of the Open Working Group (OWG) on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have issued the "zero draft" of goals and targets. Titled ‘Introduction and Proposed Goals and Targets on Sustainable Development for the Post2015 Development Agenda,' the zero draft proposes 17 SDGs to be attained by 2030, as well as associated targets.

PFII Calls for Indigenous Peoples' Leadership in World Conference [viewed]

Unpfii23 May 2014: The 13th session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII) concluded with a call for indigenous peoples to be "in the co-driver's seat" at the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples (WCIP) in September 2014. The meeting also addressed good governance, violence against women, indigenous children and youth, human rights, the post-2015 development agenda, and the situation of indigenous peoples in Asia.

UN Watercourses Convention to Enter into Force Following 35th Ratification [viewed]

UN Treaty Collection19 May 2014: The UN Convention on the Law of the Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses (UN Watercourses Convention) will enter into force in August 2014. Viet Nam became the 35th country to accede to the Convention, in accordance with Article 36 of the Convention, which states that entry into force will occur on the 90th day following the deposit for the 35th ratification, acceptance, approval or accession.

The new document represents the latest revision to the set of "focus areas" under consideration in the OWG. It includes 16 focus areas and 140 targets.

Event: Ninth Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to Study Issues Relating to the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine BBNJ [viewed]

This meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ) is the third of three meetings (April 2014, June 2014 and January 2015) that the UN General Assembly (UNGA) requested be convened. The meetings aim to make recommendations to the UNGA on the scope, parameters and feasibility of an international instrument under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). These three meetings are expected to result in a summary of discussions that will be submitted to the President of the UNGA, and are anticipated to contribute to a decision to be taken at the 69th Session of the UNGA on the development of a new international instrument under UNCLOS.
