Event: Final Preparatory Meeting for 3rd International Conference on SIDS [viewed]

The second and final preparatory meeting (PrepCom) for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) will take place from 23-27 June 2014, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, according to a draft decision approved in the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Second Committee on 11 December 2013 (A/C.2/68/L.67). The SIDS Conference is scheduled for 1-4 September 2014, in Apia, Samoa.

At the close of the Sixth Session of the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Open Working Group (OWG 6) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Co-Chairs outlined options for the next phase of the process. The dates of a further set of formal OWG meetings were finalized at the conclusion of OWG 7. They will take place on: 3-5 March (OWG 9), 31 March - 4 April (OWG 10), 5-9 May (OWG 11), 16-20 June (OWG 12) and 14-18 July 2014 (OWG 13).

At the close of the Sixth Session of the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Open Working Group (OWG 6) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Co-Chairs outlined options for the next phase of the process. The dates of a further set of formal OWG meetings were finalized at the conclusion of OWG 7. They will take place on: 3-5 March (OWG 9), 31 March - 4 April (OWG 10), 5-9 May (OWG 11), 16-20 June (OWG 12) and 14-18 July 2014 (OWG 13). Informal-informal consultations will be scheduled during the week before OWG-12.

UNGA's Oceans and Law of the Sea Resolution Focuses on Marine Debris, Climate Change [viewed]

UNGA9 December 2013: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted, by a recorded vote of 115 in favor to one against (Turkey), with two abstentions (Colombia, Venezuela), its annual omnibus resolution on oceans and the law of the sea (Resolution A/RES/68/70).

Event: Water, Sanitation and Sustainable Energy in the Post-2015 Development Agenda [viewed]

This thematic debate is part of a series of three high-level events and three thematic debates convened by the President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). The events are organized the theme, 'The Post-2015 Development Agenda: Setting the Stage!' and seek to initiate discussions on priority areas for the post-2015 development agenda through in-depth, interactive and participatory discussions, with the objective of generating concrete contributions to the formulation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The thematic debate will include an opening segment, three interactive stakeholder panel discussions and a closing segment. The debate will take place over one and a half days. Permanent Missions to the UN are invited to nominate Ministerial level representatives to co-chair panel discussions.

UNGA Approves Text on Human Right to Water and Sanitation [viewed]

United Nations21 November 2013: The Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) has approved a draft resolution on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation. Germany and Spain sponsored the draft resolution, which had 82 co-sponsors.
