UN-Water Report Calls to Prioritize Wastewater in Post-2015 Agenda [viewed]

UN Water Logo2 February 2015: A UN-Water report calls for prioritizing wastewater treatment under a dedicated Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on water, highlighting that only 20% of the world's wastewater is currently being treated. 'Wastewater Management: A UN-Water Analytical Brief' was produced by the World Health Organization (WHO), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN-Habitat on behalf of UN-Water.

Event: Ninth World Urban Forum [viewed]

The ninth World Urban Forum (WUF9), convened by the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), will bring together thousands of stakeholders to share practices and knowledge on how cities are built, planned and managed. WUF9 participants will include representatives of: national, regional and local governments; non-governmental organizations; community-based organizations; research institutions and academies; the private sector; development finance institutions; foundations; the media; and UN organizations and other international agencies. The WUF's key objectives include: advocating for and raising awareness on sustainable urban development; advancing knowledge on sustainable urbanization through debates, and exchange of experiences and best practices; and coordinating and cooperating within and between different constituencies towards advancing and implementing the Habitat Agenda. WUF is the biggest major international event to address human settlements, including rapid urbanization and its impact on cities, communities, economies, climate change and policies. It meets every two years, and participation has increased to around 22,000 attendees from all over the world. WUF9 will be the first Forum to meet after the post-2015 development agenda process and the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development – Habitat III in 2016.

The UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) aims to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable urban development, assess progress and accomplishments to date, address poverty and identify and address new and emerging challenges. The conference is expected to result in an action-oriented outcome document and the establishment of a ‘New Urban Agenda'.

Experts Meet to Write Book on Participatory Inclusive Land Readjustment [viewed]

GLTN - UN Habitat9 December 2014: A group of experts from the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN)/UN-Habitat and others in the field of land readjustment met in order to write a book on participatory inclusive land readjustment (PILaR). The group convened in Elementaita, Kenya, from 24-28 November 2014. PILaR borrows from conventional land readjustment, which is increasingly being used in developing countries, and is one way in which to convert open fields and slums into livable urban neighborhoods.

UN Holds Inaugural World Cities Day [viewed]

Workshop Addresses Urban Climate Change Resilience in Southeast Asia [viewed]

UN-HABITAT24 October 2014: UN-Habitat participated in a two-day, high-level event examining 'Environment Change and Urbanization in the South East Asia Region.' Commenting on how climate change will affect rapidly urbanizing areas in the region, Nguyen Quang, Director of UN-Habitat Viet Nam, noted that climate change has had "a direct effect on key urban infrastructure such as transportation, water supply and energy, and exacerbates urbanization problems."
