IPBES-3 Adopts Stakeholder Engagement Strategy [viewed]

ipbes-stakeholderdays17 January 2015: The third session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-3), held from 12-17 January in Bonn, Germany, has adopted the revised draft stakeholder engagement strategy (SES) and implementation plan. With stakeholder engagement viewed as an important element for the relevance, effectiveness, credibility and overall success of IPBES, the strategy aims to encourage the participation of scientists and other knowledge holders in the Platform's work and facilitate the use of the IPBES products, such as its policy support tools.

IPBES to Undertake Thematic Assessment on Land Degradation and Restoration [viewed]

ipbes17 January 2015: The third session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-3) has approved a timetable for carrying out an assessment on land degradation and restoration. The assessment is part of a first set of three thematic assessments to be carried out by the Platform between 2015 and 2018. The final outcome will include an executive summary presenting key findings and policy-relevant conclusions, a summary for policymakers and an eight-chapter report.

ipbes17 January 2015: The third session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-3) concluded with delegates adopting a number of decisions, including on: the work programme for 2014-2018; a stakeholder engagement strategy (SES); a communications and outreach strategy; the financial and budgetary arrangements; and rules of procedure for the Platform on, inter alia, the conflict of interest (COI) policy.

IPBES-3 Opens with Discussions on Work Programme [viewed]

ipbes12 January 2015: The third session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-3) opened on 12 January 2015, in Bonn, Germany. Delegates heard opening statements from dignitaries, regional groups and multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) and discussed: organizational matters; membership of the Platform; credentials; and reports from the IPBES Executive Secretary Anne Larigauderie and Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) members on implementing the work programme 2014–2018.

GEF Updates on Sustainable Cities, Deforestation and Food Security Programmes [viewed]

GEF5 January 2015: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has released its first updates on three 'integrated approach' programmes focused on: sustainable cities; taking deforestation out of commodity supply chains; and food security in sub-Saharan Africa. The updates provide an overview of the history, background and aims of each programme as well as their next steps. Each of the three programmes is expected to submit a Programmatic Framework Document to the 48th GEF Council Meeting in June 2015.

Gaborone Declaration for Sustainability in Africa Names Conservation International as Secretariat [viewed]

ci-botswana12 December 2014: Conservation International (CI) has assumed the role of the Secretariat of the Gaborone Declaration for Sustainability in Africa (GDSA). As Secretariat, CI is tasked with helping the GDSA's ten African signatory countries to build on the initiative's existing successes and further efforts to value nature in national social and economic decision-making.

UN-REDD Calls for REDD+ to Link Mitigation and Adaptation [viewed]

unreddDecember 2014: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) released an info brief exploring how REDD+ can achieve synergies between climate change mitigation and adaptation. The brief notes that such synergies are already called for in international processes including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

LAC Countries Exchange REDD+ Experiences [viewed]

unredd12 December 2014: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) released the outcomes from a South-South exchange on developing REDD+ strategies in Latin America and the Caribbean. The exchange allowed for countries in the region to learn and share experiences, and to develop specific actions to further national REDD+ readiness processes.
