Private Sector Forum Commits to Support Achievement of SDGs [viewed]

United Nations Global Compact26 September 2015: The Private Sector Forum resulted in more than 35 corporate commitments to contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including through investments in low-carbon infrastructure and solutions to make clean energy affordable and accessible. Also at the Forum, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the UN Global Compact and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) launched ‘the SDG compass,' a tool for helping companies to maximize their contributions to the Global Goals.

Event: UN Leaders and Partners Launch Central African Forest Initiative [viewed]

A high-level event to launch the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI) partnership is being hosted by the UN Development Programme (UNDP), Norway, and partners, and will feature the signature of the Joint Declaration on CAFI. The region has a unique opportunity to create country-specific development pathways which avoid deforestation, and accelerate progress to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources. Central African countries that have developed investment frameworks which incentivize sustainable development and address the drivers of forest degradation, deforestation, and poverty, can use CAFI to request and coordinate international support.

Equator Prize Announces 2015 Winners [viewed]

equatorinitiative21 September 2015: The 21 winning initiatives of the 2015 Equator Prize include a indigenous group in Brazil that inspired the film 'Avatar'; a conservation group in Indonesia that is saving sea turtles; a movement for pygmy rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo; and a community-based organization in the poorest region of Afghanistan that is restoring areas affected by conflict and creating new jobs. The prize is the "flagship programme" of the Equator Initiative, a partnership that brings together the UN, governments, civil society, businesses and grassroots organizations to advance sustainable development solutions.

Regional Technical Workshop on Illegal Wildlife Trade Discusses Challenges in Central Asia [viewed]

gslep18 September 2015: A regional technical workshop convened in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to discuss challenges in addressing illegal wildlife trade and to develop a common strategy to prevent it. The meeting specifically highlighted the plight of snow leopards and the role INTERPOL can play through advocacy, intelligence gathering, capacity-building and assistance in operations.

Event: A Call for Joint Action to Achieve the SDGs: Advancing Integrated Solutions to Accelerate Change [viewed]

This Ministerial and Stakeholders Action Platform is organized by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and other partners on the margins of the UN Sustainable Development Summit. This high-level event will provide a platform to focus international attention on the role of multi-stakeholder partnerships in achieving collective impact through agenda-setting, policy change, communications and on-the-ground implementation. It will consider clusters for innovative partnerships such as: i) building capacities for innovation, for promotion of sustainable consumption and production (SCP) patterns and for green and inclusive growth; ii) breaking the silos: building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions and implementing partnerships at national and local levels for sustainable development; and iii) mainstreaming biodiversity: restoring and sustaining healthy ecosystems for people and planet. An outcome of this event will be a call for joint action by the co-organizers of the event that gives expression to the key messages of and will be presented during the event.

UNEP Publication Focuses on the Role of Forests in Green Economy Transformation in Africa [viewed]

the_role_of_forests8 September 2015: On the occasion of the XIV World Forestry Congress, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) launched a report on 'The Role of Forests in a Green Economy Transformation in Africa.' The report calls for a stronger integration of the largely informal forest sector into national planning and accounting, to boost the sector's productivity while promoting sustainable management of forest resources.

UN-REDD/IIED Brief Explores the Potential of a Green Economy Approach to Africa's Forest Sector [viewed]

FAO, UNDP Raise Profile of Agriculture in Climate Change Adaptation Planning [viewed]
