Gender Day at UNCCD COP 12 Explores Women's Contribution to LDN [viewed]

dryland_women_land_rights16 October 2015: Held on the sidelines of the 12th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), this one-day event addressed gender perspectives in meeting the UNCCD goal of land degradation neutrality (LDN), and associated target 15.3 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The discussions drew on a three-part global study, titled ‘Women's Empowerment in the Drylands,' which explores issues of gender justice with respect to land rights, governance and resilience.

UNEP Launches Guide to National Legislation for Rio Principle 10 [viewed]

UNEP Logo23 October 2015: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched a guide to help countries improve their implementation of Principle 10 of the 1992 Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, on access to information, public participation and access to justice in environmental matters. UNEP describes the guide as “a milestone for both environmental law and sustainable development.” The publication was launched alongside the Eye on Earth Summit in early October, and later made available online.

GEF Council Approves Regional Programme to Protect Amazon [viewed]

GEF21 October 2015: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council has approved a “first-of-its-kind” multi-million dollar project to help protect over 80% of the Amazon and combat climate change. GEF says it will commit US$113 million for the Amazon Sustainable Landscapes Program, a regional programme covering Brazil, Colombia and Peru, which is expected to leverage US$682 million in additional financing over five years.

Africa MDG Report Reviews Progress, Looks Forward to SDGs [viewed]

UNECA28 September 2015: Despite challenging initial conditions, African countries have made progress on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), according to the 2015 edition of an Africa-focused MDG report. This year's report, titled ‘Assessing Progress in Africa Toward the Millennium Development Goals,' emphasizes that success in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will depend on embracing the three dimensions of sustainability, and on “credible means of implementation,” including financing and renewed commitment.

Event: FCPF Participants Assembly and Participants Committee Meeting [viewed]

Organized by the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF), the twentieth meeting of the Participants Committee is expected to address the readiness package of Costa Rica and mid-term progress reports with requests for additional funding by Chile, Mozambique and Nepal. The eighth meeting of the Participants Assembly is expected to hear reports and address administrative and legal matters. A joint FCPF/UN-REDD Programme Knowledge Exchange Day is scheduled for 8 November.

Poverty Eradication Day Calls for Post-2015 Solidarity [viewed]

United Nations17 October 2015: The UN has marked the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, which was held under the theme 'Building a sustainable future: Coming together to end poverty and discrimination.' This year, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the theme highlighted the need for more attention with regard to the excluded and marginalized. Helen Clark, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator, said the theme celebrated “the solidarity and the optimistic spirit” of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
