Event: Towards a Deforestation-free Future: The Demand-side Challenge [viewed]

To be held at the margins of Climate Week, the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Office for REDD+ Coordination in Indonesia (UNORCID), in collaboration with other partners, are facilitating a discussion on reducing deforestation while promoting economic growth, drawing on examples from Indonesia. Mountain Partnership Publication Showcases Costs and Benefits of Mountain Tourism [viewed]

The Mountain Partnership publication features 28 case studies from mountain regions showcasing examples of mountain tourism and offering lessons learned and recommendations on ways to promote sustainable mountain tourism.

UNEP and IUCN Partner for Forest Restoration [viewed]

SIDS Conference Generates Partnerships to Conserve and Manage Pacific Ocean Resources [viewed]

Samoa Partnerships Commitment4 September 2014: The Third International Conference on Small Island developing States (SIDS) generated financial commitments of US$1.9 billion across nearly 300 partnerships, many of which focus on oceans and biodiversity. ELD Study Calls for Livelihood Diversification in Botswana's Kalahari [viewed]

eld3 September 2014: A study on ecosystem service trade-offs under four different land use scenarios in Botswana's Kalahari rangelands has found that communal grazing land uses deliver the broadest range of ecosystem services. However, the study calls for policy reform to prevent an over-emphasis on commercial food production. The report is part of a series of case study outputs supported by the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) initiative.

Event: IOSEA SS7 [viewed]

The seventh Meeting of the Signatory States (SS7) to the Indian Ocean-South-East Asian (IOSEA) Marine Turtle Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will address the IOSEA Conservation and Management Plan; illegal take and trade of marine turtles in the IOSEA Region; marine turtle genetic stocks of the Indo-Pacific; socio-economic and cultural implications of marine turtle use and conservation; and Indian Ocean fisheries-turtle Interactions. Participants will also review IOSEA's Technical Support and Capacity-Building Programme, including recommendations for its future direction, led by the IOSEA Advisory Committee.

GEO SIDS Outlook Highlights Blue-Green Economy, Island Culture, Nature and Technology [viewed]

GEO-SIDS2 September 2014: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) launched the Global Environmental Outlook (GEO) Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Outlook, on the sidelines of the Third International Conference on SIDS. The report describes SIDS trends and outlooks, including challenges related to SIDS's isolation, remoteness and out-migration as well as climate change, natural disasters, water shortages and increasing food and fuel prices, among others.

Study Predicting the Impact of Land-Use Change on Biodiversity Published [viewed]

Unep-Wcmc1 September 2014: Scientists at the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and the Natural History Museum, London, UK, have published a worldwide synthetic analysis of how individual species in four taxonomic groups, namely invertebrates, reptiles and amphibians, mammals and birds, respond to multiple human pressures in tropical and sub-tropical forests.
