UNEA High-level Dialogue on Illegal Wildlife Trade Calls for Strong Ministerial Declaration [viewed]

unea26 June 2014: The Ministerial Dialogue on Illegal Trade in Wildlife, part of the Ministerial segment of the first-ever UN Environment Assembly (UNEA), discussed threats from the illegal harvesting and trafficking of timber, fish, tigers, pangolins, great apes and other species. It provided a high-level forum to exchange views and experiences among Ministers on the challenges of and progress towards addressing the causes and implications of illicit wildlife trade.

Initiative in East Africa Launched to Address Illegal Logging and Timber Trade [viewed]

UNEP:Interpol:FAO:UNDP:UNODC26 June 2014: Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda announced, at the first UN Environment Assembly (UNEA), an initiative to address the illegal timber trade originating from East Africa, recognizing also that illegal logging must be mitigated, and forests managed sustainably, in order to reduce emissions from forest loss.

GRASP Releases State of the Apes [viewed]

GRASP25 June 2014: In concert with the first UN Environment Assembly (UNEA),the Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) launched a report titled 'State of the Apes: Extractive Industries and Ape Conservation,' which is the first in a series of policy publications focused on apes. The report emphasizes that global systems of production, consumption, and demography are inter-connected, and that rapid globalization will exert intense pressure on natural resources and ape habitats.

EU, UNEP Strengthen Collaboration on Environment, Climate Change [viewed]

EU UNEP25 June 2014: The European Commission and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that lays the foundation for continued collaboration on environment and climate change issues. Under the MOU, the European Commission and UNEP and will engage in more targeted cooperation on such areas as climate change, green economy, biodiversity and the new mercury convention.

IPBES Offers Draft Guidance on Regional and Sub-Regional Assessments [viewed]

ipbes19 June 2014: The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has released the first draft of a guidance document addressing the scoping of IPBES deliverable 2b, on regional and sub-regional assessments. The draft guidance is being circulated to member States and observers for comments to assist the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) and Bureau with its finalization.

UNEP Reports on Emerging Issues for SIDS [viewed]

Unep LogoJune 2014: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a report, titled ‘Emerging Issues for Small Island Developing States (SIDS),' which provides an overview of 20 environmental issues and 15 socio-economic issues critical to the sustainable development of SIDS. The report discusses, among other challenges facing SIDS, biodiversity damage and loss and climate change, including sea level rise. The report highlights opportunities for SIDS to move towards a green economy, including through renewable energy resources and terrestrial and oceanic natural resources.
