The Host Country Agreement was signed by Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director, and Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Dr. Sailele Malielegaoi, Prime Minister of Samoa, at the official opening of the office, on 2 September 2014.

GEO SIDS Outlook Highlights Blue-Green Economy, Island Culture, Nature and Technology [viewed]

GEO-SIDS2 September 2014: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) launched the Global Environmental Outlook (GEO) Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Outlook, on the sidelines of the Third International Conference on SIDS. The report describes SIDS trends and outlooks, including challenges related to SIDS's isolation, remoteness and out-migration as well as climate change, natural disasters, water shortages and increasing food and fuel prices, among others.

Study Predicting the Impact of Land-Use Change on Biodiversity Published [viewed]

Unep-Wcmc1 September 2014: Scientists at the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and the Natural History Museum, London, UK, have published a worldwide synthetic analysis of how individual species in four taxonomic groups, namely invertebrates, reptiles and amphibians, mammals and birds, respond to multiple human pressures in tropical and sub-tropical forests.

Event: Fourth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Carpathian Convention (COP 4) [viewed]

The Fourth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 4) to the Framework Convention on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians (Carpathian Convention) will meet from 23-26 September in Mikulov, Czech Republic, to decide on the strategic policy direction of the Convention for the next three years. COP 4 also serves as the Meeting of the Parties to its Protocols on Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biological and Landscape Diversity, Sustainable Forest Management, and Sustainable Tourism. Participants will include environment ministers and high-level representatives of the seven Parties to the Convention. Parties are expected to, inter alia, review and decide upon a number of implementing documents, issue declarations and statements, and ratify the Protocol on Sustainable Transport to the Convention.

UNEP Online Course Focuses on Disaster Risk, Ecosystem-Based Solutions [viewed]

UNEP28 August 2014: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has unveiled the first-ever 'Massive Open Online Course' (MOOC) on how to minimize disaster risk through natural or ecosystem-based solutions. The MOOC, titled ‘Disasters and Ecosystems: Resilience in a Changing Climate,' which was introduced during the 5th Annual International Disaster Risk Conference (IDRC), aims to broaden awareness on a range of tools for eco-disaster risk reduction and adaptation by demonstrating how climate change, disasters and the environment are linked.
