UNEP, SANDEE and ESCAP Convene Environmental Accounting Workshop [viewed]

UNEP10 October 2013: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics (SANDEE) and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), in collaboration with the Poverty-Environment Initiative (PEI) and others, convened the 'Valuing and Accounting for the Environment in the Asia Region' workshop in Bangkok, Thailand, from 8-10 October. The conference included technical discussions on green accounting systems and valuing natural capital.

Event: UN Briefing on Progress in the Implementation of the Objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity [viewed]

The UN General Assembly, via resolution 67/212 , adopted in December 2012, decided that one of the special events of the Second Committee, in the 68th session of the UN General Assembly, would be devoted to a joint briefing by UN Environment Programme (UNEP), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), on the implementation of the objectives of the CBD, including actions undertaken to promote access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their utilization and associated traditional knowledge. This event, titled 'Briefing on progress in the implementation of the objectives of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, as part of the UN Decade of Biodiversity, and to further efforts to improve coherence,' will be held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly Second Committee meetings on 30 October 2013.

Event: CBD Global Workshop on Reviewing Progress and Building Capacity for the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans Revision Process [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in collaboration with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and its implementing agencies, UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN Development Programme (UNDP), this global workshop targets primarily the GEF Enabling Activity (EA) project coordinators. It will comprise a number of parallel modules on themes focused on aspects of planning and development of national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) that have been identified as the most in need of technical support, including: biodiversity information management; strategic target setting; mainstreaming; and resource mobilization.

ICRI Announces New Draft Strategy to Curb Lionfish Invasions [viewed]

ICRI11 October 2013: The International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) announced that the Regional Lionfish Committee (RLC), also known as Ad Hoc Committee for the Caribbean Regional Response to the Lionfish Invasion, has coordinated the development of a regional Strategy to guide action by stakeholders concerned with, and impacted by, the lionfish invasion.

UNEP-WCMC Releases Ecosystem Service Site-Assessment Toolkit [viewed]

Unep-WcmcOctober 2013: The UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), together with BirdLife International and 13 other institutions, has developed 'The Toolkit for Ecosystem Service Site-based Assessment (TESSA).' TESSA is intended to guide non-specialists through a selection of methods to identify site-specific ecosystem services and specifies "winners" and "losers" as a result of the change of ecosystem service availability.

IPBES Regional Consultations Reports Available in Preparation for IPBES-2 [viewed]

ipbesOctober 2013: The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has concluded a series of regional consultations, for which the reports are now available. The consultations were held in Nairobi, Kenya (Africa region), Budapest, Hungary (Eastern Europe region), Sao Paolo, Brazil (Latin American and the Caribbean region), Leipzig, Germany (Pan-European Stakeholder group) and Ramsar City, Iran (Asia region).

Event: IPBES Stakeholder Meeting [viewed]

A stakeholder meeting will be convened by the interim Intergovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Secretariat at the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), in coordination with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and co-facilitated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the International Council for Science (ICSU). The meeting will provide first-time IPBES Plenary participants with an opportunity to understand the way IPBES works, as well as to discuss the engagement of stakeholders in IPBES.
