Event: Annual Meeting of the Inter-Agency Support Group on Indigenous Peoples' Issues [viewed]

The 2012 annual meeting of the Inter-Agency Support Group on Indigenous Peoples' Issues will address, among other issues, the Group's responses to current and previous recommendations of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues to the Group and the UN system; opportunities for inter-agency collaboration and possible strategic directions; and implementation of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, including through the UN Development Group and its guidelines on programming at the country level on indigenous issues.

World Risk Report 2012 Highlights Global Disaster Risk Hotspots [viewed]

11 October 2012: The World Risk Report 2012, published by the Alliance Development Works (Bündnis Entwicklung Hilft) in collaboration with the UN University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) and The Nature Conservancy, focuses on the theme of environmental degradation and disasters, assessing disaster risk based on information from 173 countries.

UNU-IAS Policy Report Describes Health and Biodiversity Linkages [viewed]

10 October 2012: The UN University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) has launched a policy report, titled “Biodiversity, Traditional Knowledge and Community Health: Strengthening Linkages,” on the connections between biodiversity and development priorities, particularly the ways in which biodiversity contributes to human health. The report aims to support planning toward development objectives by highlighting health and biodiversity linkages at the community level.

GEF Report Warns of Worldwide Water Bankruptcy Risks [viewed]

GEF24 September 2012: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) partnered with the UN University (UNU) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to find lessons from a collection of important transboundary water projects involving over US$7 billion in investments. The findings were included in a new report, titled "Science-Policy Bridges over Troubled Waters."

InterAction Council, UNU-INWEH Launch Report on Global Water Crisis [viewed]

11 September 2012: The UN University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) and InterAction Council (IAC), along with the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation, have published a report calling for the UN Security Council to take stronger action on water issues. “The Global Water Crisis: Addressing an Urgent Security Issue” presents the outcomes of a May 2011 meeting of IAC, and outlines steps in the Québec Declaration on the World Water Crisis, which resulted from that meeting.

Event: Joint Meeting on the Economics of Land Degradation and Adoption of Sustainable Land Practices [viewed]

The Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) secretariat, on behalf of the partner organizations, is coordinating a Joint Meeting on the Economics of Land Degradation and Adoption of Sustainable Land Practices, which will take place on 1-2 October 2012, in Brussels, Belgium. The two-day meeting will bring together invited academics, political decision makers and actors from the private sector to provide for inter-sectoral discussions in the course of the ELD initiative. Discussions will focus on the valuation of land and land-based ecosystem services in supporting decision-making in the process of economical, environmental and social sustainable development. The meeting is jointly organized by the ELD Secretariat and the United Nations University (UNU-INWEH) and will be funded by the German Ministry for Development and Economic Cooperation, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the European Commission. The latter will also be hosting the meeting.
