Event: First Meeting of the CFS OEWG on SDGs [viewed]

The Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was created by the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) at its 42nd session, with the task to discuss how CFS can put the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs at the center of its work. Specifically, the OEWG is expected to analyze those SDGs that are related to sustainable agriculture and food security and nutrition and agree on how CFS can provide a platform for sharing, learning and identifying challenges and achievements and address policy gaps. The first meeting of the OEWG will allow participants to share their views on the objectives, scope and work of the OEWG, and to initiate a discussion on CFS' role and activities to support progress on the implementation of the SDGs falling within its mandate.

CFS Working Group Addresses Future Work on Nutrition and Focus of HLPE Report [viewed]

CFS14 January 2016: Established under the auspices of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), the Open-ended Working Group (OEWG) on Nutrition held its first meeting and addressed: its workplan; the focus of the High Level Panel of Experts (HLPE) report on nutrition and food systems; and CFS' further involvement in nutrition.

Established under the auspices of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), this Open-ended Working Group (OEWG) on Nutrition will consider CFS' role in advancing nutrition. It is expected to discuss proposals for a CFS workstream on nutrition, and will convene three times in 2016, with meetings scheduled 14 January, 24 February and 29 April. The OEWG will report to CFS 43 in October 2016 and CFS 44 in October 2017.

UN Secretary-General Launches Climate Resilience Initiative [viewed]

cop2130 November 2015: At the opening of the Paris Climate Change Conference, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the launch of an initiative to build the resilience of the world's most vulnerable populations against impacts of climate change and natural disasters. Led by the Ban in collaboration with 13 UN entities, the initiative will enhance vulnerable populations' capacities to anticipate hazards, absorb shocks and reshape development to reduce risks.

FoodSECuRE Facility to Build Community Resilience to Climate Change [viewed]

wfp_iriNovember 2015: The Food Security Climate Resilience (FoodSECuRE) Facility, an initiative of the World Food Programme (WFP), aims to secure US$400 million to enable governments to quickly unlock funding to scale up food and nutrition responses as well as disaster risk reduction activities before climate disasters occur. The WFP and its partner, the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI), have launched activities in five countries, with fast-tracked implementation in Zimbabwe and Guatemala to respond to El Niño.

Rome-Based UN Agencies Consolidate Collaboration at 2015 'Land and Water Days' [viewed]

land_water_days_banner12 November 2015: The 3rd edition of ‘Land and Water Days,' which took place in Rome, Italy, from 10-12 November 2015, highlighted challenges related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the need for integrated responses in terms of soil and water management practices. The event was co-organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the International Fund for Agriculture and Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP), with contributions from the Global Mechanism (GM) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and other stakeholders.

ILC Engages Non-Regional CSOs [viewed]

ILC5 November: The International Land Coalition (ILC) has convened a meeting of non-regional civil society organization (CSO) members for the first time ever. Approximately 30 representatives of farmers' organizations, international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and research organizations came together to discuss land issues, strengthen peer-to-peer linkages and strategize for the ILC's future.
