GWP Holds Drought Management Workshop for Central and Eastern Europe [viewed]

global-water-partnership-central-europe27 May 2014: The second workshop of the Integrated Drought Management Programme in Central and Eastern Europe (IDMP CEE) convened to identify synergies among program activities and discuss guidelines for helping countries to draft drought management plans. The 35 participants from 10 countries who attended the workshop discussed the regional implementation of drought management plans and measures in the second edition of European Union (EU) Water Framework Directive.

IDMP Releases 10-Step Process for Drought Management Policy [viewed]

GWP WMO28 May 2014: The Integrated Drought Management Programme (IDMP), a joint Global Water Partnership (GWP) and World Meteorological Organization (WMO) project, has released a publication titled 'National Drought Management Policy Guidelines: A Template for Action.' The guidelines provide a 10-step process for policymakers to design drought management, preparedness and mitigation plans.

Event: Managing Groundwater in Coastal Areas and SIDS [viewed]

This workshop aims to: promote conjunctive surface, groundwater and marine management and analyze options from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) International Waters (IW) portfolio; identify best and replicable practices and share experiences from GEF IW projects; review possibilities for integrated water resources management (IWRM) / integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) integration, as well as the state of integration of groundwater and surface water management within organizations dealing with aspects of coastal zone management, including in small island developing states (SIDS); and discuss appropriate knowledge management strategies and review existing tools. This meeting organized by the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Global Water Partnership (GWP) – Mediterranean and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) in cooperation with the UNESCO/World Meteorological Organization (WMO) International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre (IGRAC) and the Priority Actions Programme/Regional Activity Centre (PAP/RAC) in the framework of the GEF IW:LEARN, MedPartnership and Transboundary Water Assessment Programme (TWAP), serves as a contribution to the International Year of SIDS 2014.

WMO Commission for Agricultural Meteorology Sets Quadrennial Priorities [viewed]

The Commission intends to focus on: increasing human and financial resources; building capacity; and encouraging cooperation among meteorologists and the agricultural sector.

GESMAP Updates Ballast Water Methodology [viewed]

15 April 2014: The Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESMAP) Ballast Water Working Group has updated its Methodology for conducting its work and gathering information. The 66th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) endorsed the revised Methodology (BWM.2/Circ.13.Rev.1) and agreed it should be applied to all submissions for Basic Approval of Ballast Water Management (BWM) systems.

During an official ceremony held to mark the Day in Geneva, Switzerland, WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud called on youth to use their "innovative spirit, fresh insights, and courage" to tackle climate change.
