Event: 26th Conference of the Danubian Countries on Hydrological Forecasting and Hydrological Bases of Water Management [viewed]

The 26th Danube Conference, part of a series of biennial conferences hosted alternately by the countries of the river Danube, is being hosted by Germany, in Deggendorf. The Conference aims to share methodologies and case studies on hydrological basic information, hydrological forecasting and parameters, disaster management, the role of hydrological and biotic processes in aquatic systems, and linking different fields of science. Conference topics include: basis of hydrology; hydrological data management; hydrological modeling and forecasting; disaster events; administrative structures for water management; river basin and water management; and ecohydrology. The Conference is co-organized by: the German National Committee for the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and of the Hydrology and Water Resources Programme (HWRP) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO); the Bavarian Environment Agency; and the Deggendorf Institute of Technology.

WMO Launches SIDS Website [viewed]

WMOAugust 2014: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has launched a small island developing States (SIDS) website to highlight its work with SIDS, given that they are low-lying and vulnerable to weather- and climate-related hazards, such as tropical cyclones, floods and droughts.

WMO Maps Mortality and Economic Loss from Extreme Events [viewed]

WMO11 July 2014: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) of the Catholic University of Louvain (UCL) in Belgium have jointly published the ‘Atlas of Mortality and Economic Losses from Weather, Climate and Water Extremes 1970-2012,' which describes the distribution and impacts of weather, climate and water-related disasters, and highlights measures to increase resilience.

Event: 35th Session of the Joint Scientific Committee for the World Climate Research Programme [viewed]

The 35th Session of the Joint Scientific Committee (JSC-35) for the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) will convene in Heidelberg, Germany to discuss the implementation of Grand Challenges, including Grand Challenges on: Regional Sea Level Rise; Water Availability; Cryosphere in a Changing Climate; Regional Climate Information; Climate Extremes; and Clouds, Circulation and Climate Sensitivity. The meeting will also discuss Core Projects, WCRP Councils, Working Groups, Partnerships and Joint Initiatives. JSC-35 will also hold a joint session with the WMO Technical Conference on Climate Services. WCRP is a joint project of the International Council for Science (ICSU), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO-IOC).

GWP Holds Drought Management Workshop for Central and Eastern Europe [viewed]

The 35 participants from 10 countries who attended the workshop discussed the regional implementation of drought management plans and measures in the second edition of European Union (EU) Water Framework Directive.

IDMP Releases 10-Step Process for Drought Management Policy [viewed]

GWP WMO28 May 2014: The Integrated Drought Management Programme (IDMP), a joint Global Water Partnership (GWP) and World Meteorological Organization (WMO) project, has released a publication titled 'National Drought Management Policy Guidelines: A Template for Action.' The guidelines provide a 10-step process for policymakers to design drought management, preparedness and mitigation plans.

Event: Managing Groundwater in Coastal Areas and SIDS [viewed]

This workshop aims to: promote conjunctive surface, groundwater and marine management and analyze options from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) International Waters (IW) portfolio; identify best and replicable practices and share experiences from GEF IW projects; review possibilities for integrated water resources management (IWRM) / integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) integration, as well as the state of integration of groundwater and surface water management within organizations dealing with aspects of coastal zone management, including in small island developing states (SIDS); and discuss appropriate knowledge management strategies and review existing tools. This meeting organized by the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Global Water Partnership (GWP) – Mediterranean and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) in cooperation with the UNESCO/World Meteorological Organization (WMO) International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre (IGRAC) and the Priority Actions Programme/Regional Activity Centre (PAP/RAC) in the framework of the GEF IW:LEARN, MedPartnership and Transboundary Water Assessment Programme (TWAP), serves as a contribution to the International Year of SIDS 2014.
