UNECE Region Adopts Framework to Reduce Air Pollution from Agriculture [viewed]

UNECE12 December 2014: Parties to the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP) have adopted an ‘Ammonia Framework Code' to help countries reduce ammonia emissions from agriculture, which threaten human health, causing cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Atmospheric ammonia, a major contributor to air pollution, also leads to acidification and excessive nutrient loading, resulting in biodiversity loss in many of the most vulnerable ecosystems.

UNECE and FAO Develop European Forest Sector Scenarios [viewed]

FAO UNECEDecember 2014: As a contribution to the European Forest Sector Outlook Study (EFSOS II), the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) prepared an assessment of the competitiveness of the European forest sector. The assessment notes the positive impact of global economic growth on the forest sector, but suggests that the European forest sector will not benefit from expanding regional markets to the same extent as other regions.

Syr Darya Basin Focus of Push for Transboundary Cooperation [viewed]

UNECE-FAO-Global Water Partnership4 December 2014: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention) convened an assessment workshop for the Syr Darya Basin covering Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The assessment is part of the ‘nexus approach' designed to link water, food security and energy.

Event: 37th Session Joint FAO/UNECE Working Party on Forest Statistics, Economics and Management [viewed]

UNECE Committee Discusses Future of Forests as Carbon Sinks [viewed]

FAO UNECE18 November 2014: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Forestry and Timber Section conducted a regional review of carbon sequestration in forests. The review concludes that the European region contains 41% of the world's forests, worth 225 million tons of carbon per year as a forest biomass carbon sink.

UNECE, FAO Report on Gradual Recovery of Forest Product Markets [viewed]

FAO UNECE18 November 2014: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) have released the 2013-2014 'Forest Products Market Review,' which stresses that while some market recovery has occurred since the 2009 trough of the financial crisis, forest product markets remain about 10 to 15% below pre-crisis levels.
