Technical Protocol Concluded on Transboundary Cooperation in Neman Basin [viewed]

UNECE-Belarus-Lithuania5 November 2014: Negotiations recently concluded on a bilateral technical protocol between Belarus and Lithuania on transboundary water cooperation in the Neman River Basin. The negotiations were facilitated by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) as a component of the project ‘River Basin Management and Climate Change Adaptation in the Neman Basin.'

Conference Addresses Development Cooperation to Mitigate Environmental Disaster in Aral Sea [viewed]

UNECE: Regional Forest Cover Expanding, but Threatened by Urbanization [viewed]

FAO UNECE21 October 2014: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) released the initial findings of a regional assessment of forest cover that highlights a 27.5 million hectare expansion of forested area from 2000 to 2015. According to the report, the UNECE region accounts for more than 41% of global forest cover and has shown an increase in both in protected forest areas as well as an expansion of payments for ecosystem services (PES).

Transboundary Basins Workshop Focuses on Adaptation to Climate Change [viewed]

UNECE15 October 2014: The Fifth Workshop on Water and Adaptation to Climate Change in Transboundary Basins focused on developing and implementing climate change adaptation strategies and measures, taking into account specific outcomes at the transboundary level. The workshop brought together experts working on adaptation to climate variability and change, with a focus on transboundary basins, and was preceded by the 7th meeting of the Task Force on Water and Climate on 13 October. It was convened under the leadership of the Governments of the Netherlands and Switzerland, with support from the Secretariat of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

UNECE Committee Approves Work on Sustainable Housing and Urban Development, Land Management [viewed]

Unece9 October 2014: The 75th session of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Committee on Housing and Land Management (CHLM) agreed on the text of the Geneva UN Charter on Sustainable Housing and decided on new work regarding energy efficiency in housing, smart cities, urban planning and disaster risk reduction, social housing, preparations for the Third United Nations on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III), and various issues in land administration and management.

UNECE Agrees on Charter on Sustainable Housing [viewed]

UNECE8 October 2014: The UN Economic Commission for Europe's (UNECE) Committee on Housing and Land Management (CHLM) has agreed on the text of a Geneva UN Charter on Sustainable Housing. While technically nonbinding, the Charter represents a political commitment by the 56 UNECE Member States to address a wide variety of environmental, health and social issues associated with housing, and provides guidelines and benchmarks for monitoring progress. It also supports policies and actions, and encourages international cooperation at all levels. The text was agreed during the Committee's 75th session, held on 8-9 October 2014, in Geneva, Switzerland.

Event: 76th Session of UNECE CHLM [viewed]

The UN Economic Commission for Europe's (UNECE) Committee on Housing and Land Management (CHLM) will hold its 76th session to review its work and discuss issues involving housing, land management and urban development, including standards for energy efficiency in housing, smart cities, and implementation of the Strategy for Sustainable Housing and Land Management in the ECE Region for the Period 2014-2020. The session will also agree on CHLM input into HABITAT III, the global Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development.

ECLAC Report Tracks Progress in Indigenous Peoples' Rights [viewed]

However, significant gaps still exist, according to 'Guaranteeing Indigenous People's Rights in Latin America: Progress in the Past Decade and Remaining Challenges,' launched during the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples (WCIP), taking place from 22-23 September 2014, at UN headquarters in New York, US.

Event: Joint Session of the 38th European Forestry Commission and 72nd UNECE Committee on Forest and Forest Industry [viewed]

Created in 1947, the European Forestry Commission (EFC) is one of six Regional Forestry Commissions established by FAO to provide a policy and technical forum for countries to discuss and address forest issues on a regional basis. It meets bi-annually. The EFC has a number of associated subsidiary bodies, including the Working Party on the Management of Mountain Watersheds; the UNECE/FAO Working Party on Forest Statistics, Economics and Management; and seven UNECE/FAO Teams of Specialists.
