ESCWA Launches Inventory of Shared Water Resources in Western Asia [viewed]

Event: 10th Session of the ESCWA Committee on Water Resources [viewed]

The 10th Session of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) Committee on Water Resources is expected adopt recommendations to member countries and to ESCWA on water resources management and discuss issues including climate change, implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), integrated water resources management (IWRM) of shared watercourses and a review of the Committee's actions since the 9th Session.

Event: TEEB Capacity-building Workshop for North Africa and the Middle East [viewed]

This workshop is organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) through its Regional Office for West Asia (ROWA), and the UN Economic and Social Commission for West Asia (ESCWA), in close coordination with the UNEP TEEB Office, the League of Arab States, and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and in cooperation with the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). The workshop seeks to: provide decision-makers in the region with economic arguments for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity; promote synergies and enhanced cooperation among relevant policy areas and sectors by mainstreaming biodiversity and ecosystem services; and support the revision and review or update of national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) in light of the new Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020.

Event: CBD Workshop for North Africa and Middle East on Updating NBSAPs [viewed]

This regional workshop is jointly organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the Technical Secretariat of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment (CAMRE) of the League of Arab States, and the Regional Office for West Asia (ROWA) of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), with the financial support of the Japan Biodiversity Fund. Its purpose is to: strengthen national capacities for the development, implementation, reviewing, updating and communication of national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs); help facilitate national implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020; and translate the post-2010 strategic plan into national targets and commitments. The workshop will include a session on further developing a regional strategy on invasive alien species, to be facilitated by the Global Invasive Species Programme.

UN Officials Highlight Development Challenges and Potential at Arab Development Summit [viewed]

19 January 2011: The Second Arab Economic, Social and Development Summit took place on 19 January 2011, in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. Speakers at the Summit included Helen Clark, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator, and Mahmoud Mohieldin, World Bank Managing Director. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also sent a statement.

Event: EGM on the "Development of a Vulnerability Assessment for the Arab Region to Assess Climate Change Impacts on the Water Resources Sector" [viewed]

This Expert Group Meeting (EGM) is organized by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). It aims to take stock and exchange experiences of Arab countries, as well as that of regional and international organizations, on climate change modeling methodologies, tools, model projections, downscaling techniques and knowledge gaps, as well as ways in which vulnerability can be assessed in view of better understanding the effects of climate change on sustainable development in the Arab region.
