United Nations23 August 2013: The sixth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group (the Working Group) to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ) aimed to identify gaps and ways forward with a view to ensuring an effective legal framework on BBNJ, drawing on inputs provided by intersessional workshops that were held in early May 2013 to improve understanding of BBNJ issues and lead to a more productive debate in the Working Group.

Post-2015 Water Consultation Report Summarizes Water Recommendations [viewed]

The World We Want9 August 2013: The final report of the Water Thematic Consultation describes water access as “a fundamental right for all” and underscores linkages among water and each of the themes of consultation on the post-2015 development agenda. The report reflects six months of consultations on the role of water in the post-2015 development agenda, including online discussions, face-to-face dialogues and the High-Level Meeting on Water. It summarizes discussions and provides recommendations in three main areas: water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH); water resource management (WRM); and wastewater management and water quality.

In Annual Report, UNSG Proposes Transformative Actions for Post-2015 Agenda [viewed]

United NationsAugust 2013: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has submitted his annual report on implementing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and further steps to advance the UN development agenda beyond 2015. This year's report, titled 'A life of dignity for all: accelerating progress towards the MDGs and advancing the UN development agenda beyond 2015,' stresses sustainable development as the "global guiding principle and operational standard" for the post-2015 era, and calls for ending extreme poverty within a generation.

Event: Interactive Dialogue on International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples [viewed]

This dialogue is organized by the Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII), the UN Department of Social and Economic Affairs (DESA), the UN Department of Public Information (DPI), and the NGO Committee on the Decade of the World's Indigenous Peoples. The dialogue will address the theme, 'Indigenous Peoples Building Alliances: Honouring Treaties, Agreements and Other Constructive Arrangements'. The UN Secretary-General, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs at DESA, PFII Chairperson and others will deliver statements to mark the International Day.

mdg2013-report1 July 2013: The 2013 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Report recognizes “substantial progress” in meeting many MDG targets while also urging nations to accelerate efforts to achieve unmet MDGs by the 2015 deadline. The report examines areas in which action is most needed, including on environmental sustainability, and highlights unequal progress, with disparities among regions and between rural and urban populations, population groups within countries, and men and women.
