Disaster Reduction Day Focuses on Contributions of Older People [viewed]

United Nations13 October 2014: This year's International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) focused on the contributions of older people in combating climate change and to the post-2015 disaster risk reduction (DRR) framework. The Day focused on the theme ‘Resilience is for Life,' with celebrations that: called for a more inclusive approach for older people in DRR; emphasized their needs; recognized their role in and contribution to better planning and understanding of disaster risk; and addressed how they can help build resilience in their communities using their experience and knowledge.

Event: Mainstreaming Sector Policies into Integrated National Sustainable Development Planning: Enhancing Sustainable Tourism, Urbanization, Resource Efficiency, Biodiversity and Environmental Protection [viewed]

The UN Symposium on 'Mainstreaming Sector Policies into Integrated National Sustainable Development Planning: Enhancing Sustainable Tourism, Urbanization, Resource Efficiency, Biodiversity and Environmental Protection' will: address options, ways and means to promote sustainable tourism that is economically viable (for public and private investors), socially and economically beneficial (for employees and small-scale entrepreneurs), and environmentally benign (minimal environmental impacts, enhanced resource efficiency and biodiversity conservation); advocate and promote integrated policy decision-making related to sustainable urbanization and tourism at all levels, including the various concerned government departments and agencies and public, private and community stakeholders; propose recommendations of good practice (for project developers, planer, and financiers), in terms of integration of the three dimensions of sustainable development; exchange information, review and analyze trends in global and regional tourism demand, analyze demand projections and compare alternative approaches to marketing strategies; identify potential areas or projects for international cooperation and partnerships; and to document best practice examples for publication on the Sustainable Development Knowledge Platform hosted by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The event will be co-hosted by the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of Iran (ICHTO) and the Tehran Office of UN Development Programme (UNDP). It will be co-organized by DESA, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Environment of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Oceans Events Support Ocean Management, Stress Enforcement [viewed]

Governments Conclude Consultations on WCIP Outcome Document [viewed]

wcip15 September 2014: The draft outcome document of the forthcoming World Conference on Indigenous Peoples (WCIP) commits participating Heads of State and Government to give "due consideration to all the rights of indigenous peoples" in the elaboration of the post-2015 development agenda. The draft outcome document is the result of consultations among UN Member States, chaired by Andrej Logar, Slovenia, and Marjon Kamara, Liberia, which concluded on 12 September 2014.

WinnersAnnounced_22 September 2014: A monitoring system providing real-time forest information and a tool promoting climate-smart agriculture among farmers in Colombia are the winners of the UN Global Pulse's Big Data Climate Challenge. Seven additional 'Projects to Watch' come from a wide range of countries, including India, China, South Africa, the UK and the US. Aimed at highlighting data-driven evidence to drive climate action, the Challenge is an initiative of the UN Secretary-General.

DESA Analyzes SIDS Sustainable Development Trends [viewed]

DESAAugust 2014: Despite advances toward sustainable development, small island developing States (SIDS) continue to face many challenges, according to ‘Trends in Sustainable Development: SIDS,' a publication issued by the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) Division for Sustainable Development (DSD) as an input to the Third International Conference on SIDS. The report assesses SIDS' progress in key sustainable development areas: climate change; demographics; energy; finance and trade; health and non-communicable diseases (NCDs); natural disaster management; oceans and seas; social development, including education, food security, gender equality and access to water and sanitation; tourism; and waste management.
