UN Releases Central Framework for Environmental-Economic Accounting [viewed]

envaccountingApril 2014: The ‘System of Environmental-Economic Accounting 2012—SEEA Central Framework' (SEEA Central Framework), prepared under the auspices of the UN Committee of Experts on Environmental-Economic Accounting (UNCEEA), has been released. The updated statistical framework is meant to help countries compile consistent and comparable data on environmental assets, and interactions between the economy and the environment.

UNRIC Newsletter Addresses Plastics Waste [viewed]

UNRICApril 2014: The April 2014 newsletter from the UN Regional Information Centre for Western Europe (UNRIC) focuses on plastic waste, including articles on the EU's recent agreement to ban certain plastic bags by 2020, and a proposal by the UN Association of Finland that the Government of Finland initiates a global UN treaty on plastic debris in the oceans.

Event: World Oceans Day [viewed]

World Oceans Day is meant to raise global awareness on the benefits derived from the oceans and the current challenges facing oceans, such as illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, habitat destruction, over-exploitation, marine pollution and ocean acidification, among others. The Day also provides an opportunity for reflection on our collective and individual duty to interact with oceans in a sustainable manner. The UN will celebrate World Oceans Day 2014 at an event on 9 June 2014 at UN Headquarters, New York, US. The winners of the Annual World Oceans Day Oceanic Photo competition will be recognized at the event. The Day also coincides with the first day of the 24th Meeting of the Meeting of Parties (MOP) to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Other celebrations for World Ocean Day 2014 will be marked globally and online.

Event: 15th Meeting of the Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea [viewed]

The 15th meeting of the Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea will focus on the theme, ‘The role of seafood in global food security'. The meeting will include plenary sessions and discussion panels on the following areas: understanding global food security and the current role of seafood; the role of seafood in global food security in the context of sustainable development; and opportunities for, and challenges to, the future role of seafood in global food security. The meeting will result in a Co-Chairs' summary of ideas and issues raised and discussed. The Consultative Process meets annually to conduct a review and consider the report of the Secretary-General on oceans and the law of the sea, with an emphasis on identifying areas for enhancing intergovernmental and inter-agency coordination and cooperation.

EU-Africa Summit Outlines Actions on Peace and Security, Prosperity and People [viewed]

4th European Union EU-Africa Summit4 April 2014: Delegates to the Fourth EU-Africa Summit agreed on a Declaration outlining commitments on peace and security, prosperity and people. Leaders also adopted a declaration on migration and mobility, and a road map to frame EU-Africa relations in 2014-2017. The EU committed to provide more than €28 billion to Africa through bilateral cooperation.

Event: 13th Working Conference of the CEO Water Mandate [viewed]

The 13th working conference of the CEO Water Mandate, convened by the UN Global Compact in collaboration with the Pacific Institute, will explore topics related to corporate water stewardship and help shape the Mandate's projects and activities. The conference will address, inter alia: corporate water stewardship and the post-2015 development agenda; responsible business engagement in watershed-level efforts; innovations in supply chain water stewardship, with a focus on sustainable agriculture; aligning business practice with the human rights to water and sanitation; and defining and harmonizing best practice in corporate water disclosure. The Mandate Secretariat is also co-organizing a multi-stakeholder meeting with Forest Trends, the Katoomba Group, the Peruvian Ministry of the Environment, and the Peruvian National Water Authority to better understand water-related challenges facing the country, and actions companies are taking to mitigate water risk and support sustainable water management. Launched by the UN Secretary-General in July 2007, the UN Global Compact's CEO Water Mandate is a public-private initiative designed to help companies develop, implement and disclose water sustainability policies and practices.

International Day of Forests Commemorated Worldwide [viewed]

International Day of Forests21 March 2014: In celebration of the second International Day of Forests, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted the important benefits of forests: habitat provision for 80 percent of all terrestrial biodiversity; support of an estimated 1.6 billion people; adaptation and mitigation to climate change; and the maintenance of a timber and wood industry that accounts for almost 1 percent of global gross domestic product (GDP).
