Global Ocean Commission Discusses Rescue Package for the Global Ocean [viewed]

iisdrs_goc18 May 2015: The 5th Meeting of the Global Ocean Commission (GOC 5) discussed the outcome of the GOC report, titled ‘From Decline to Recovery: A Rescue Package for the Global Ocean.' Twelve high-level Commissioners, including former Heads of State, and ministers and leaders in the private sector and of international organizations, met on 17 May 2015 in New York, US, to: update Commissioners on progress and developments since the report's release; solicit input into the proposed strategy contained in the report; and discuss ways by which a Global Ocean Accountability Board (GOAB – working title) could be established and managed once the Commission ceases to exist at the end of 2015.

2015 Global Land Forum Focuses on Africa, Indigenous Peoples' Rights [viewed]

Tibetan Leader Appointed Mountain Partnership Ambassador [viewed]

Mountain Partnership15 May 2015: His Holiness (HH) the Drikung Kyabgön Chetsang has been appointed as Mountain Partnership Ambassador in order to “inspire goodwill toward improving the quality of life and sustaining healthy environments in the world's mountain regions.” Eduardo Rojas-Briales, Assistant Director-General for Forestry of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), announced the appointment on 6 May 2015, at the Stimson Center in Washington, DC, US.

Mediterranean SCP Center Documents PCBs Applications, Advises on Waste Management [viewed]

SCP/RAC6 May 2015: The Regional Activity Center for Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP/RAC) has compiled applications of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) for owners and public officials, as part of its collaboration with the PCBs component of the Global Environment Facility (GEF)-funded MedPartnership project for the Environmentally Sound Management of equipment, stocks and wastes containing or contaminated by PCBs in national electricity companies of Mediterranean countries. The SCP/RAC is a Stockholm Convention Regional Center, focusing on cooperation with Mediterranean countries.

GEF, World Bank Support Contaminated Site Management in China [viewed]

GEF30 April 2015: The World Bank Group's Board of Executive Directors has approved a Contaminated Site Management Project to help clean up contaminated sites and improve soil pollution management in two provinces in China. Qing Wang, World Bank, said the project will help the Government of China sustainably manage contaminated sites and reduce environmental and health risks, while contributing to China's implementation of the Stockholm Convention (SC) on the Elimination of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).

Event: 15th Session of Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues [viewed]

The 15th session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII) will bring Member States and indigenous peoples' representatives together to discuss: implementation of the six mandated areas of the PFII with reference to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP); conflict, peace and resolution; and coordination among the three UN mechanisms on indigenous affairs. A dialogue will take place with the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Chair of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The session will also consider the future work of the PFII, and emerging issues.

Event: Sustainable Stock Exchanges Regional Dialogue Southeast Asia [viewed]

The Stock Exchange of Thailand, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Global Compact and Principles for Responsible Investment (PRAI), with support from the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the Climate Disclosure Standards Board and other sponsors are hosting the dialogue. CEOs of stock exchanges, institutional investors, regulators and other policy makers will discuss challenges and opportunities to promote sustainable development through capital markets, including ways to promote the environmental, social and governance performance of listed companies. A high-level policy dialogue will take place in the morning, and workshops on sustainability reporting, climate disclosure standards and investor risk management in relation to water scarcity, land use and other natural resource management issues will run in parallel in the afternoon. The event is part of the Sustainable Stock Exchanges Initiative (SSEI), led by UNEP, UNCTAD, PRAI and the UN Global Compact.
