GEF-UNEP-SPREP Pacific Project Considers Roadmap for Future Island Biodiversity Activities [viewed]

GEF UNEP30 November 2015: Participants discussed a roadmap for integrating project results into national and community-level planning processes at the final review meeting of the Global Environment Facility's Pacific Alliance for Sustainability (GEFPAS) Integrated Island Biodiversity (IIB) project. The project, which included activities in the Cook Islands, Nauru, Tonga and Tuvalu, is scheduled to officially close in June 2016.

Event: 2016 Annual Meetings of the Inter-American Development Bank and Inter-American Investment Corporation [viewed]

The 57th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the 31st Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC) is intended to provide a forum for discussion among the institution's Governors, including finance ministers and central bank presidents, and representatives of multilateral financial institutions, development agencies and private banks. A series of seminars will take place prior to the opening of the meeting. In addition to meetings of the Boards of Governors, the meeting will include sessions on, inter alia: the private sector as an engine of growth for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC); strengthening financing for the private sector to promote growth; consolidating LAC's participation in global value chains; the Caribbean's energy challenge; protecting productive ecosystems, including the coasts and the ocean, through an integrated approach; a “Blue Urban Agenda”; and the Road to Habitat III. The annual meetings take place in late March or early April each year.

Mountain Day Focuses on Mountain Products; Launches Reports on Food Insecurity and Adaptation [viewed]

mountain_international_day11 December 2015: International Mountain Day (IMD) took place under the theme ‘promoting mountain products,' with the aim of highlighting the potential of mountain products and services to contribute to livelihoods and sustainable employment in mountain areas. The Day highlighted opportunities for growth, such as the production of high quality, high value products like fair trade, organic cocoa, coffee, herbs, honey, spices and other niche market products, and underscored constraints in mountain development, especially with regard to food insecurity and climate change.

Governments, Partners Launch International Partnership for Blue Carbon [viewed]

australia_indonesia_costarica6 December 2015: The Governments of Australia, Costa Rica and Indonesia launched an International Partnership for Blue Carbon at the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF), which convened on the sidelines of the Paris Climate Change Conference. The partnership aims to increase understanding of and accelerate action on the role of blue carbon ecosystems in action on climate change, including both adaptation and mitigation.

COP 21 Considers Revised Draft Paris Outcome [viewed]

cop21_day1110 December 2015: Negotiations continued on the draft outcome of the Paris Climate Change Conference on Thursday, 10 December, with COP 21 President Laurent Fabius introducing a revised draft text in the evening. Fabius said there are “open options” on the most complex issues of differentiation, finance and ambition, and asked delegates to examine the document with a "new perspective,” keeping the final agreement in mind, suggesting “we are extremely close to the finish line.” Following a second night of negotiations, delegates were told on Friday that the sixth meeting of the Comité de Paris would convene Saturday morning, 12 December, during which a final draft of the proposed Paris Outcome would be presented.

LPAA Results in Over 70 Major Climate Action Initiatives [viewed]

lpaa9 December 2015: The Lima-Paris Action Agenda (LPAA), which convened on the sidelines of the Paris Climate Change Conference, illustrated the “massive and rising response by cities, regions, business and civil society to take ambitious climate action, frequently in cooperation with national governments,” according to the UNFCCC Secretariat. The LPAA resulted in over 70 major initiatives from nearly 10,000 actors from 180 countries on agriculture, building, business, cities, forests, innovation, private finance, resilience, short-lived climate pollutants, transport and water.
