In opening remarks, Antoine Frérot, CEO, Veolia, pointed to the need to change business-as-usual practices, commenting that "impoverishing nature impoverishes humanity."

May 2014 Water Finance Update [viewed]

ebrd-worldbank-adb-gef-eib-afdbMay 2014: During May, international and regional financial institutions, including the World Bank, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), undertook a variety of actions related to water resources, including presenting the results of existing projects, participating in regional conferences and approving new loans. Projects this month addressed issues including transboundary water cooperation, water supply and sanitation, hydroelectric generation, disaster risk reduction (DRR) and ecosystem service conservation, among others.

The consultations demonstrated “broad consensus” that the proposed goal of “Securing sustainable water for all” is fundamental for the post-2015 development agenda.

World Mountain Forum Discusses Climate Change, Mountain Communities [viewed]

wfm24 May 2014: The World Mountain Forum (WMF), which took place from 22-24 May 2014, in Cusco, Peru, provided a platform to promote sustainable mountain development. The Forum convened sessions on four key topics: climate change; family farming; mountain communities; and mountain cities. These sessions included a particular focus on water and food security, sustainable investment and climate change adaptation.

SAVE FOOD Initiative Releases Guidance on Preventing Food Waste [viewed]

think.eat.save23 May 2014: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) have released a tool, titled ‘Think.Eat.Save Guidance Version 1.0.' The tool is part of the SAVE FOOD Initiative and the FAO-UNEP Sustainable Food Systems Programme.

WBCSD Report Describes Advantages of Addressing the Water, Food and Energy Nexus [viewed]

WBCSDMay 2014: The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) has released a report on the water, food and energy nexus, titled ‘Co-optimizing Solutions: Water and Energy for Food, Feed and Fiber.' The report was launched during the ‘Sustainability in the Water-Energy-Food Nexus' conference, on 20 May in Bonn, Germany, which was convened in recognition that the increasing demand for food and other agricultural products will put significant pressures on resources and impact greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.
