UNGA General Debate 2014 Continues Focus on MDGs, Post-2015 Agenda, SIDS [viewed]

unga6929 September 2014: As the 69th UN General Assembly's (UNGA) General Debate entered its second week, speakers continued to reflect on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and outline their priorities for the post-2015 development agenda, including gender equality and women's empowerment, peace and security, and oceans. Small island developing States (SIDS) and landlocked developing countries (LLDCs) highlighted particular challenges and vulnerabilities, with some also addressing the challenge of graduation from least developed country (LDC) status.

Urgency of Healthy Oceans Stressed by Experts, Officials [viewed]

UNEP, FAO Partner on Ecosystems and Food Security [viewed]

FAO UNEP26 September 2014: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to work together towards improving food security through the restoration and sustainable management of ecosystems. The MoU describes a Strategic Partnership Plan and formalizes cooperation between the agencies on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in the broader context of the post-2015 development agenda.

Meetings of the CBD and its Protocols Open in Pyeongchang [viewed]

CBD29 September 2014: The seventh Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (Cartagena Protocol COP/MOP 7) has opened in Pyeongchang, the Republic of Korea. It will be followed by the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12), which will run from 6-17 October 2014, also in Pyeongchang, and the first Meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) (NP COP/MOP 1), which will be held during the second week of CBD COP 12, from 13-17 October 2014.

GEF, World Bank Partner to Manage Migratory Fish Stocks in Coastal Areas, ABNJ [viewed]

World Bank - GEF24 September 2014: The World Bank, in partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF), approved a project to improve the management of migratory fish stocks in coastal areas and areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) in four marine regions. The US$10 million project aims to maintain the economic benefits of sustainable fisheries and biodiversity conservation in the Western Atlantic and Caribbean; Bay of Bengal; Western and Central Pacific; and the Eastern Pacific regions.
