AEEA Recognizes Environmental Crime Fighters in Asia Pacific [viewed]

environmental_crime fighters21 May 2015: Five enforcement officers and eight organizations working on addressing illegal trade in wildlife, chemicals and waste in the Asia Pacific region received the Asia Environmental Enforcement Award (AEEA). This award is a joint initiative of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and Freeland, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and USAID.

Saiga Die-Off Continues in Kazakhstan [viewed]

CMS21 May 2015: The Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) sent an expert mission to Kazakhstan, as per the country's request, to strengthen work to identify the cause of the current saiga die-off. Latest official reports confirm that 85,000 saiga antelopes have died in the Betpak-dala population, as well as another part of the Betpak-dala population towards the west in Aktobe oblast in Kazakhstan.

GEF Highlights SFM Support in Report to UNFF11 [viewed]

GEF20 May 2015: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) presented its report to the eleventh session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF11), highlighting its support for sustainable forest management (SFM) through the GEF-5 SFM/REDD+ Incentive Mechanism, and its provision of over US$700 million in grant support in 80 countries for a range of SFM-related projects.

UN-REDD Rolls out Benefits and Risks Tool (BeRT) [viewed]

UN-REDD Programme19 May 2015: The UN collaborative initiative on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD) in developing countries (UN-REDD Programme) has launched a tool designed to help REDD+ countries assess the social and environmental benefits and risks associated with potential REDD+ activities. The Benefits and Risks Tool (BeRT) can also analyze existing policies, laws and regulations to see how effectively they address the safeguards that the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC decided should be considered in the undertaking of REDD+ actions.

Event: The Pacific Ocean Alliance: High Hopes for High Seas [viewed]

This meeting, hosted by the Pacific Ocean Commissioner, seeks to bring more than 100 participants together to share knowledge and take action on the sustainable development, management and conservation of the ocean and its resources in areas beyond national jurisdiction. In addition, the Pacific Ocean Alliance, an inclusive stakeholder partnership, will meet for the first time to discuss the Pacific Islands region's oceans priorities and interests as they relate to the high seas.

Event: Africa Rising: Mobilizing Biodiversity Data for Sustainable Development [viewed]

This event is organized by The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), and USAID Resilience in the Limpopo Basin Programme (RESILIM). Its aim is to increase regional understanding of the biodiversity data-science-policy value chain and identify the opportunities and solutions that it presents for sustainable development in Africa as well as draw attention to relevant tools, resources and learning networks for building effective biodiversity information systems in Africa.

SE4ALL Launches Sustainable Bioenergy Initiative [viewed]

SE4ALL20 May 2015: A multi-stakeholder coalition has been launched, co-chaired by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB), to scale up the development and deployment of sustainable bioenergy solutions in order to meet global sustainable energy needs and contribute to the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) goals of doubling global renewable energy use and ensuring universal energy access by 2030.

CMS Reports on Saiga Mass Mortality Episode [viewed]

CMS19 May 2015: Approximately 10,000 saigas have been found dead in the Amangeldy district of the Kostanay region in Central Kazakhstan, an area that covers around 16,000 hectares, within the range of the saiga's Betpak Dala population, the country's largest. This is the third mass mortality episode that has occurred in recent years, with the Ministry of Agriculture reporting the first mortality cases on 12 May 2015. Investigations by state authorities are underway, with samples being collected for further analysis regarding the cause of the deaths.
