Event: Second Our Oceans Conference [viewed]

The Second Our Oceans Conference aims to promote voluntary governmental and institutional commitments to care for the ocean. Participants will discuss solutions to topics such as illegal fishing, marine plastic pollution, and ocean acidification and climate change. The Conference will also encourage the creation of marine protected areas. Over 400 political, academic and civil society figures, including the US Secretary of State and Prince Albert of Monaco, are expected to attend. The first Our Oceans Conference held in June 2014 resulted in more than US$800 million in government and private sector commitments to conserve the ocean and its resources.

UNCCD, Partners Further COP 12 Preparations [viewed]

unccdlogo_cop1210 August 2015: In the lead up to the 12th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), which is to be held from 12-23 October 2015, in Ankara, Turkey, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) has launched the 'Road to Ankara' initiative, the UNCCD Secretariat has issued a call to journalists, and the host country of Turkey has launched the COP 12 website.

ITTO Releases 2013-2014 Assessment of World Tropical Timber Situation [viewed]

ITTO logoAugust 2015: The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) has published the 'Biennial Review and Assessment of the World Timber Situation 2013-2014,' which provides data on the production and trade of primary wood products with an emphasis on tropical primary wood products in 82 countries.

FAO Releases Catalogue of Publications for World Forestry Congress [viewed]

fao_headquarters9 August 2015: In anticipation of the XIV World Forestry Congress (WFC2015), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has created a catalogue of a selection of its publications, organizing them according to the Congress's six sub-themes. The publication, which lists over 100 reports, policy briefs and other FAO documents, facilitates the dissemination of information on forests and forest peoples, as well as on FAO's work.

Event: Seventh International Conference on Agricultural Statistics (ICAS VII) [viewed]

The Seventh International Conference on Agricultural Statistics will take place under the theme 'Modernization of agricultural statistics in support of the Sustainable Development Agenda'. The conference, which will bring together economists, statisticians, researchers and analysts working on agricultural and rural statistics, is expected to discuss changing needs and opportunities for agricultural statistics, particularly in the context of the development of the indicator framework for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference will include plenary sessions and parallel sessions on: poverty, rural development and the social dimension of agriculture; sustainable agricultural production and consumption; markets, prices and values chains for the agribusiness sector; natural resource use in agriculture (soil, water, fishery, forestry, biodiversity); climate change and environmental issues: the role of agriculture; and data sources, data collection, use of information technology tools and data quality; data analysis integration and modeling; and data dissemination and communication and the use of statistics for policy making and research. Interested participants should submit abstracts in response to the call for papers by 30 September 2015. The Italian National Institute of Statistics is organizing the conference in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO).

UN-REDD Highlights Technical Support for UNFCCC REDD+ Implementation [viewed]

unredd3 August 2015: Efforts to prepare forest countries to implement the UNFCCC REDD+ guidelines are highlighted in the August/September 2015 edition of 'The REDD+ Resource,' the newsletter of the UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD). The newsletter also features the UN-REDD Programme's publications, as well as expert insights on upcoming events, such as the World Forestry Congress and the Paris Climate Change Conference.

Event: 2nd INTERPOL Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Events [viewed]

Hosted by the new INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation (IGCI), 2015 events will include, from 16-17 November 2015, the 2nd INTERPOL – UN Environment Programme (UNEP) International Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Conference, and on 18 November 2015, the 2nd Meeting of the INTERPOL Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Committee (ECEC). The meetings will review progress in the field of environmental compliance and enforcement; and identify priorities and adopt joint strategies to enhance national, regional and international responses to effectively address environmental crime. Key topics on the conference agenda will include: the role of demand and supply in wildlife, forestry and fisheries crimes; waste management vulnerabilities and law enforcement interventions; innovative tools and practices for intelligence sharing and investigations; the role of law enforcement in meeting sustainable development goals; and vibrant networks and capacity development. The ECEC meeting is a closed event. It will include elections for the Advisory Board of the INTERPOL Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Committee.

Event: UN Private Sector Forum 2015 [viewed]

This event, hosted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, will focus on the role of the private sector in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are expected to be adopted during the UN Summit to adopt the post-2015 development agenda. The Forum aims to: increase the understanding of efforts underway by the private sector and civil society; showcase contributions businesses are making to sustainable development, including by setting ambitious goals and engaging in cross-sector partnerships; create a shared understanding of the private sector's role in contributing to the SDGs, focusing on how business contributions to governance issues, such as anti-corruption, peace and stability, and the rule of law, can help advance the SDG agenda; highlight the importance of long-term goal-setting by businesses aligned with the 2030 SDG time frame; and provide a platform for business, investors, governments, foundations and civil society organizations to explore pathways for enhancing the impact of business contributions to sustainable development, including through public-private partnerships. Approximately 350 participants are expected to attend the Forum, including CEOs, and high-level representatives from governments, UN agencies, funds and programmes, civil society organizations, and business associations, foundations and investor groups. The UN Global Compact is organizing the Forum, in collaboration with the Office of the Post-2015 Development Planning.

UNEP Conference Establishes Pan-African Institution on Ecosystem Based Adaptation for Food Security [viewed]

ebafosc231 July 2015: Africa has a new regional institution, the Ecosystem Based Adaptation for Food Security Assembly (EBAFOSA), dedicated to promoting ecosystem-based adaptation (EBA) as a tool to address chronic food insecurity in Africa, while contributing to sustainable agricultural production and rural livelihoods. The Assembly was formally established during the closing session of the 2nd EBA for Food Security Conference (EBAFOSC 2), which took place from 30-31 July 2015, at the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

ITPGR Secretariat Publishes Booklet to Support Implementation of Multilateral System and SMTA [viewed]

ITPGR31 July 2015: The Secretariat of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) has published an online booklet, titled 'Opinions and Advice of the Ad Hoc Technical Advisory Committee on the Multilateral System and the Standard Material Transfer Agreement (SMTA).' The publication seeks to provide guidance to Contracting Parties in implementing their obligations under the Treaty.
