UN Report Discusses Possible Extinction of Bornean Orangutan [viewed]

future_borean_orangutan28 July 2015: Extensive deforestation and the conversion of Borneo's forests, particularly for oil palm production, are threatening endangered orangutans with extinction, according to a report titled 'The Future of the Bornean Orangutan.' A collaborator on the publication, the Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP), had indicated that over 80% of the orangutan's remaining habitat in Borneo could be lost by the year 2080 under the island's current land-use scenario.

AU Launches Decade of African Seas and Oceans [viewed]

Caribbean, Pacific Regions Focus on Advancing PA Networks [viewed]

The meetings offered PA managers and regional partners and organizations such as the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management Programme (BIOPAMA), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) the opportunity to collaborate and share ideas.

Event: GEO-XII Plenary and Mexico City Ministerial Summit [viewed]

The twelfth Plenary Session of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO-XII) will convene from 11-12 November 2015, followed by the GEO 2015 Mexico City Ministerial Summit, which will take place on 13 November. Side events will take place from 9-12 November. The GEO-XII Plenary Session will meet at the Hilton Reforma on 11 November and at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores - SRE) on 12 November. Caucus Meetings and the Executive Committee Meeting and GEO Side Events will also take place throughout the week, and a GEO exhibit will be on display.

UNEP, UN-REDD Programme Address Bank and Investor Risk Policies on Soft Commodities [viewed]

banking_on_redd29 July 2015: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a report, titled 'Bank and Investor Risk Policies for Soft Commodities,' along with an accompanying Soft Commodities Forest-risk Assessment Tool addressing deforestation and forest degradation risk in the agricultural value chain. A UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) information brief, titled 'Banking on REDD+: Can Bank and Investor Risk Policies on Soft Commodities Benefit REDD+?' was produced in parallel.

ITTO Releases 2014 Annual Report [viewed]

IttoJuly 2015: The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) has published its annual report, highlighting progress achieved in 2014 through field projects, policy work and research. The publication summarizes the adoption of the Voluntary Guidelines for the Sustainable Management of Natural Tropical Forest, the release of the 'Rewarding the Service Providers' policy brief, and the organization of the International Forum on Payments for Environmental Services of Tropical Forests, among other activities.

FAO, NACD Develop Educational Series on Importance of Healthy Soils [viewed]

The series, which is called ‘DIG IT! The Secrets of Soil,' was developed as part of the 2015 International Year of Soils (IYS 2015).

Event: 22nd Session of the Near East Forestry and Range Commission [viewed]
