FAO's Voluntary Guidelines on Tenure Newsletter Features National Experiences [viewed]

faonewsJuly 2015: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released the July 2015 newsletter on the Voluntary Guidelines on Tenure Governance Initiative. This edition features country experiences from Cambodia, Liberia, Malawi, Myanmar, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone and South Africa in using the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (Voluntary Guidelines).

Event: Establishment of the International Network of Soil Information Institutions [viewed]

This proposed network falls under Pillar 4 of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) Action Plan, which focuses on “enhancing the quantity and quality of soil data and information: data collection (generation), analysis, validation, reporting, monitoring and integration with other disciplines”. The network will contribute towards the GSP strategy of ‘Building the global system to monitor and forecast the condition of the Earth's soil resources'.

Event: 4th Working Session of the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils [viewed]

The Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) was established at the first Plenary Assembly of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) to provide scientific and technical advice and guidance on global soil issues to the GSP primarily, and to specific requests submitted by global or regional institutions. The ITPS also advocates for addressing sustainable soil management in the different sustainable development agendas.

Event: 2nd Africa Food Security and Adaptation Conference (AFSAC2) [viewed]

This conference will convene under the theme ‘Africa's Soil the New Frontier: Re-imagining Africa Food Security Now and into the Future under a Changing Climate'. The conference will explore how to sustainably tap into soil, one of Africa's key resources, in order to enhance food security and climate change resilience, while creating new employment opportunities for the continent's increasing youth population. Specific sessions will address a range of strategies to promote and transform ecosystem-based adaptation (EBA) driven agriculture in Africa, including how to: build scalable and inclusive business models; tap into innovative financing; involve women and youth more effectively; harness education, information and communication technology, and data; scale up EBA extension and knowledge services; incentivize private sector involvement; and contribute to increased South-South cooperation and capacity building. Building on the thematic discussions, the conference will focus on how to maximize policy frameworks and develop an action plan for implementing and scaling up EBA approaches and agro-value chains across Africa.

The conference is co-organized by the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP), the Food and Agricultural Organization of the UN (FAO) and the African Union Commission (AUC), in collaboration with a range of partners from UN Agencies, international research and policy organizations, civil society networks and the private sector.

Event: 10th Meeting of AEWA Standing Committee [viewed]

The 10th Meeting of the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) Standing Committee (StC10) will consider, inter alia: preparations for the 6th ordinary session of the Meeting of the Parties (MOP6) to the AEWA to be held in Bonn, Germany, 9-14 November 2015; celebration of the 20th Anniversary of AEWA; the African Initiative for the Conservation of Migratory Waterbirds and their Habitats in Africa; and revision of the Communication Strategy. StC10 will also consider nominations for new members of the AEWA Technical Committee and the selection of winners of the AEWA Conservation Awards for presentation at MOP6.

CBD Launches Manual on Tourism and Biodiversity [viewed]

The manual aims to support the integration of biodiversity conservation and management into sustainable tourism development, and to support the implementation of the CBD Guidelines on Biodiversity and Tourism Development.

Third GSP Plenary Assembly Considers Global Soil Management Strategies [viewed]

gsp_yis1 July 2015: The third session of the Plenary Assembly of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) agreed to explore the development of voluntary guidelines for the sustainable management of soil resources, as part of a set of strategies aimed at establishing a coherent global strategy for soil protection. The meeting convened in Rome, Italy, from 22- 24 June 2015, under the auspices of the 2015 International Year of Soils (IYS 2015).

CEPF Publishes Annual Report; Showcases Investment in Biodiversity Conservation [viewed]

cepfJuly 2015: The Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) has published its 2014 report showcasing projects funded around the globe and providing an overview of CEPF investments in biodiversity hotspots. CEPF provides grants to non-governmental and private sector organizations, and focuses on conservation of biodiversity hotspots in developing and transitional countries.
