FAO Council Session Considers Alignment with SDGs, Global Forest Resources Assessment [viewed]

fao_headquartersJanuary 2016: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has made available online the report of the 153rd session of the FAO Council, held from 30 November to 4 December 2015, at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy. The Council addressed a number of issues related to forestry, including alignment of the FAO Strategic Framework with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the outcomes of the XIV World Forestry Congress and the findings of the FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment 2015, and recommended that FAO support strengthening the contributions of its work on forests to the FAO Strategic Objectives.

PROFOR Issues Update on Forest-Related Activities Funded in 2015 [viewed]

Policy Update #14: Demystifying International Environmental Law [viewed]

In the final hours of the Paris Climate Change Conference negotiations, agreement was nearly derailed by a single word. The word “shall” appeared where negotiators had agreed the provision should start with “should.” For some countries, reverting “shall” back to “should” had legal implications with regard to their mitigation obligations. For those unfamiliar with the nuances of environmental law, the stand-off over these rather similar words might have seemed trivial, belying the nature of international negotiations. The reality is, however, that the carefully crafted language of multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) matters, and has enormous implications on an agreement's form and function.

CFS OEWG Discusses Work to Support SDG Implementation [viewed]

Event: Asia-Pacific Forestry Week [viewed]

Event: Seventh Meeting of the Regular Process for World Ocean Assessment [viewed]

The seventh meeting of the Ad Hoc Working Group of the Whole on the Regular Process (Regular Process) for Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects (World Ocean Assessment), will convene from 3-9 August. The objective for the Regular Process is to improve understanding of the oceans and to develop a global mechanism for delivering science-based information to decision makers and the public. The Regular Process has met since 2011 and is responsible for the preparation of the World Ocean Assessment. A summary of the first Assessment was released in 2015.

Event: Resumed Review Conference on the UN Fish Stocks Agreement [viewed]

The Resumed Review Conference on the Agreement for the Implementation of the Provisions of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 relating to the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks (UN Fish Stocks Agreement) will convene from 23 to 27 May. The Resumed Review Conference is mandated to assess the effectiveness of the agreement and the adequacy of its provisions and, if necessary, to propose means of strengthening the substance and methods of implementation of those provisions. The first Review Conference took place in 2006, followed by a resumed Review Conference in 2010.
