UN-REDD Reports on 2014 Activities [viewed]

unreddJune 2015: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) released its 'Sixth Consolidated Annual Progress Report,' which covers the Programme's achievements in 2014. Overall, the report notes that in 2014, 56 countries participated as partner countries with US$47.8 million in funding allocated to activities in 2014.

Event: CITES CoP17 [viewed]

The 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES CoP17) will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa from 24 September - 5 October 2016. This will be the fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES held on the African continent since CITES came into force on 1 July 1975, but the first on the continent since 2000.

UNEP Report Assesses Ecosystem Services in Western Indian Ocean [viewed]

UNEP23 June 2015: Ecosystem services in the Western Indian Ocean region are valued at US$25 billion annually, according to a 'Regional State of the Coast Report' by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The report examines threats to the region's coral reefs, fisheries and oceans, including urbanization and unsustainable fishing and extraction practices. UNEP released the report at the Eighth Conference of the Parties to the Nairobi Convention, which is taking place on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Convention.

‘Blue Days' Conference Develops Plan to Strengthen Pacific Marine Ecotourism [viewed]

SPREP19 June 2015: Participants agreed on a plan of action to strengthen tourism in the Pacific region at a marine-based ecotourism conference. The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) is expected to discuss the project and its framework at its annual meeting in September 2015.

Event: 8th World Ecosystem Services Partnership Conference [viewed]

The Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP), is hosting the 8th World ESP conference under the theme ‘Ecosystem Services for Nature, People and Prosperity'. The conference will pay special attention to the public and private sector dialogue on how the ecosystem services concept can be used to support conservation, improve livelihoods and engage the business community. To facilitate dialogue between scientists, policy makers and practitioners, ESP organizes an annual international conference in different parts of the world.

Event: Eye on Earth Summit 2015 [viewed]

The Eye on Earth Summit 2015 will seek to better understand the supply and demand of data necessary to secure the future of our planet. This will be the second Eye on Earth Summit, and will bring together representatives from government, UN agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the private sector, academia and civil society to focus on closing the data gap for environmental, social and economic data to address sustainable development. The Summit aims to identify solutions for greater access to and sharing of data, providing policymakers with timely, actionable information for the critical decisions that will implement the post-2015 development agenda. Sessions during the event will explore new resources, like crowd-sourcing and citizen science, and cutting-edge technologies. The Summit is being overseen by Eye on Earth, a collaboration of the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency's Abu Dhabi Global Environmental Data Initiative (AGEDI) and the Eye on Earth Alliance, a partnership of organizations including, inter alia, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the World Resources Institute (WRI).

IWC Scientific Committee Meeting Features Discussions on Humpback Whale Recovery [viewed]

iwc19 June 2015: The International Whaling Commission (IWC) has released its Scientific Committee meeting report highlighting scientific reports on the recovery of humpback whales in the southern hemisphere, progress on the management of aboriginal whaling, by-catch challenges posed by fishing gear to vaquita and dolphin populations, and a collaboration with New Zealand on Hector's and Māui dolphins.

ELD Completes Economic Assessments of SLM in Jordan, Mali and Sudan [viewed]

eld17 June 2015: The Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative has completed three economic valuations of sustainable land management (SLM) practices in Jordan, Mali and Sudan. The studies were conducted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and its partners, and based on experiences from ongoing SLM projects in the three countries.

CBD Secretariat Releases Report of the Twelfth Meeting of Biosafety Protocol Compliance Committee [viewed]

CBD16 June 2015: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released the report of the twelfth session of the Compliance Committee of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, including the Committee's assessment of the outcomes of the seventh Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol (COP-MOP 7), its review of compliance based on information from the Biosafety Clearing-house (BCH), and the Committee's input to the third assessment and review of the Protocol and the mid-term review of its Strategic Plan 2011-2020.
