Event: "Friends of the CBD" Workshop on Mechanisms to Support Review of Implementation of the Convention [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this workshop will provide an opportunity to discuss: existing mechanisms of the CBD and how they could be used to strengthen implementation; experiences and lessons learned from other conventions and processes; and further elements for a review process that could be developed. The workshop aims to inform the first session of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation to be held from 2-6 May 2016.

Event: 17th Annual World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty [viewed]

The 2016 edition of this annual conference will convene under the theme, 'Scaling Up Responsible Land Governance' and pay special attention to working at scale, mainstreaming innovations and sustaining investments for greater impact. The main conference will run from 15-17 March and will comprise policy sessions and round-tables on core conference themes. Other key activities will include a pre-conference workshop on innovations in land governance research and monitoring, and a post-conference learning day offering masterclasses to familiarize participants with cutting edge tools and techniques for policy makers. An innovation fair exploring how technology and open data can help improve land governance at scale will also take place.

UN Boosts Water Monitoring Efforts on SDG 6, Launches High-Level Panel with World Bank [viewed]

wb_united21 January 2016: UN Water has published a guide on 'Monitoring Water and Sanitation in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,' while UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and World Bank President Jim Yong Kim have launched a high-level panel to promote financing and implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) on water and sanitation. The panel, co-chaired by the Presidents of Mauritius and Mexico, seeks to promote dialogue, innovative financing and implementation strategies for SDG 6, while the publication provides a framework for monitoring the eight targets under the Goal.

ITPGR Reports on its Sixth Governing Body, CBD Highlights Outcomes of Relevance [viewed]

ITPGR CBD19 January 2016: The report of the sixth session of the Governing Body (GB 6) of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) has been made available online. Given the close linkages between the ITPGR, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS), the CBD Secretariat has issued a notification highlighting some of the GB 6 outcomes that are of particular relevance to the CBD and the Nagoya Protocol.

Caribbean Region Slow to Address IUU, Reports FAO Brief [viewed]

fao_issue_brief18 January 2016: Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing represents one of the largest threats to sustainable fishing and marine biodiversity and hinders the Caribbean region's efforts to conserve and manage fish stocks, according to an issue brief on the topic by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN's (FAO) Sub-Regional Office for the Caribbean.

Event: 5th Working Session of the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) [viewed]

The Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) was established at the first Plenary Assembly of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) in 2013. Comprised of 27 soil experts representing all the regions of the world, the main function of the ITPS is to provide the GSP with scientific and technical advice and guidance on global soil issues, as well as to respond to specific requests submitted by global or regional institutions. The ITPS also advocates for addressing sustainable soil management within the context of sustainable development.

Event: 17th Meeting of the UN Open-ended Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea [viewed]

The 17th Meeting of the UN Open-ended Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea will convene from 13-17 June. The Consultative Process is intended to facilitate the annual review by the General Assembly of developments in ocean affairs and the law of the sea by considering the Secretary-General's report on oceans and the law of the sea and by suggesting particular issues to be considered by the General Assembly, with an emphasis on identifying areas where coordination and cooperation at the intergovernmental and inter-agency levels should be enhanced.

Event: European Soil Partnership (ESP) Workshop [viewed]

Under the auspices of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP), the European sub-regional Soil Partnership (ESP) was launched during the 2nd Global Soil Week in October 2013, and its Secretariat is based at the European Commission's Joint Research Center in Ispra, Italy. This workshop follows the finalization of a five year rolling sub-regional Implementation Plan during the second Plenary Meeting of the ESP that took placed in March 2015 in Rome, Italy. The Implementation Plans call for regular follow up workshops as part of GSP's goal of ensuring concrete field action at regional, national and local levels.
