Event: First Annual Forests and Livelihood: Assessment, Research and Engagement (FLARE) Network Conference [viewed]

The International Forestry Resources and Institutions (IFRI) research network, the Program on Forests (PROFOR), and the Musée de l'Homme Research Group on Social and Natural Evolution are convening this workshop to improve the assessment of forest governance approaches as a contribution to improved forest livelihoods, biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, and climate change mitigation and adaptation. The workshop will consider six themes: forest governance and landscapes, agricultural commodities, social and biological aspects of forest dependence, impact evaluations, pathways to prosperity, and climate variability and change.

Event: Fourth Session of the IPBES Plenary [viewed]

The fourth session of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Plenary will review progress made on the adopted IPBES work programme for 2014–2018, including the related budget and institutional arrangements for its implementation. It will, in particular, be invited to consider the two first full assessment reports of IPBES on pollination and pollinators associated with food production, and scenarios analysis and modelling of biodiversity and ecosystem services. The reports will be considered for adoption and their respective summary for policymakers will be considered for approval.

Greater Efforts Needed to Reach CBD 2020 Targets on Biodiversity Awareness [viewed]

uebt-cbd25 June 2015: According to research commissioned by the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT), an average of 69% of respondents in nine countries say they have heard of biodiversity, and additional outreach efforts are needed if the world is to reach global targets on biodiversity awareness set under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

CBFP Partners Discuss Illegal Wildlife Trade, Sustainable Management of Forests [viewed]

cbfp20 June 2015: The 15th Meeting of Partners of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) convened from 15-19 June 2015, in Yaoundé, Cameroon, on the theme ‘Ecosystems of the Congo Basin: Valuing Natural Capital, Green Growth and Regional Development.' The meeting included a ministerial conference on wildlife conservation in Africa and an extraordinary session on future commitments by CBFP partners. The European Union will assume the role of CBFP Facilitator after a transition period in early 2016.

GFCM Proclaims Day Against IUU Fishing; CBD Notifies on Underwater Noise and EBSAs [viewed]

cms-cbd-faoJune 2015: On the occasion of its thirty-ninth annual session, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) adopted four binding recommendations setting emergency measures for small pelagic fisheries in the Adriatic Sea, standards for bottom trawling demersal fisheries in the Strait of Sicily, and measures to ensure sustainable fisheries management and to deter illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in the Black Sea. Members of the GFCM also proclaimed 24 April of each year as “International day against IUU fishing.”

Event: Workshop on Private Sector Investment in Forest and Landscape Restoration [viewed]

This expert consultation is co-organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Global Mechanism (GM) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the Korea Forest Service. The aim of the workshop is to provide inputs and perspectives for a FAO/GM discussion paper on sustainable financing for forest and landscape restoration (F&LR) initiatives, and inform the development of future policy briefs and capacity building activities on this topic. The discussions will cover, among other issues: different funding sources and instruments for (F&LR); how to address barriers to F&LR investments; case studies highlighting direct and indirect benefits for private sector investors in F&LR; and lessons and good practices for inclusion in a position paper on private sector investments in F&LR.

Monaco Assessment Calls for Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for Antarctica and the Southern Ocean [viewed]

monaco10 June 2015: A meeting of biodiversity experts and other key actors has examined the extent to which conservation in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean is achieving targets under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. Participants at the meeting adopted the 'The Monaco Assessment Declaration,' which notes that a "Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, adopted and implemented by the Antarctic Treaty Parties, and broadly accepted by all, would provide an effective means to improve the outlook for the region."

Publication Highlights Insights on Sustainable Management of Mountain Soils [viewed]

international year of soils23 June 2015: ‘Understanding Mountain Soils,' a joint publication of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) and the University of Turin, offers technical insights on the sustainable management of mountain soils as a contribution to the International Year of Soils 2015. The publication was launched on the opening day of the GSP Plenary Assembly in Rome, Italy.

WTO-CITES Publication Reaffirms Trade-Environment Links [viewed]

wto-cites22 June 2015: The World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) have released a publication showing how global trade and environmental regimes can support each other and cooperate to achieve shared goals. WTO Director-General Roberto Azevêdo and CITES Secretary-General John Scanlon formally launched the publication at WTO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland on 22 June 2015.
