Event: Second Meeting of the ITPGR Working Group to Enhance the Functioning of the MLS [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR), the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group to Enhance the Functioning of the Multilateral System (MLS) of Access and Benefit-sharing will continue considering measures to increase user-based payments and contributions to the Benefit-sharing Fund, and additional measures to enhance the functioning of the MLS. The meeting will be preceded by regional and inter-regional consultations, to be held on 8 December 2014.

Event: WIPO Workshop for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities on Intellectual Property and Traditional Knowledge [viewed]

Organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), this workshop will include about 14 participants from each of the seven geo-cultural regions recognized by the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. It aims to: impart basic knowledge of the main principles of the intellectual property system from a traditional knowledge perspective; explain the negotiations taking place in the WIPO Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC); and raise awareness of the available intellectual property tools and WIPO materials that are relevant to the protection of traditional knowledge.

Event: 7th Annual ESP Conference 2014 [viewed]

The 7th Conference of the Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP) will convene under the title, 'Local action for the common good'. The conference will focus on the use of ecosystem services at the local level, with a special emphasis on Costa Rica and Latin America. Several EU-funded projects will present their results on Community-Based Ecosystem Management: CiVi.Net, COBRA, EcoADAPT and COMETLA. The Conference is organized by the Ecosystem Services Partnership with Fundación Neotrópica as its local host, and is supported by CATIE, Universidad Nacional, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature - Commission on Ecosystem Management (IUCN-CEM). The program of the Conference consists of a mix of plenary sessions, including keynote and panels; workshops, open topic sessions, special sessions and field trips.

Event: VI Latin American and the Caribbean Energy Efficiency Seminar [viewed]

The Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE), together with Nicaragua's Ministry of Energy and Mines, will co-host the VI Latin American and the Caribbean Energy Efficiency Seminar, which seeks to identify regional challenges to mitigating the environmental impacts of energy and to share experiences and best practices in energy efficiency. The EE 2014 seminar will include discussions of energy efficiency measures in the hydrocarbons sector, energy efficiency in public water systems, energy-efficient construction, strategies and mechanisms for the massive introduction into national markets of efficient appliances and equipment, applied measures and technologies for efficient transportation, and financing opportunities for energy efficiency in the region.

CBD Reacts to Recognition of Biodiversity in SDG Proposal [viewed]

CBD25 July 2014: Biodiversity and ecosystems are included throughout the 17 goals and 169 targets proposed by the Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The CBD describes the OWG's final outcome as “extremely positive from the perspective of the CBD and the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets,” noting the agreement sets the stage for better links between the implementation of the CBD's agenda and the post-2015 development agenda.

FAO Study Analyzes Global Fish Stock Status and Production Potential [viewed]

FAO25 July 2014: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Fisheries and Aquaculture Department has released a study, titled ‘Developing new approaches to global stock status assessment and fishery production potential of the seas.' The study focuses on two approaches to estimating fisheries' status: determining single-stock status; and estimating ecosystem production based on satellite estimates of primary productivity.

Civil Society Reacts to Proposed SDGs [viewed]

OWGJuly 2014: In reaction to the final outcome of the Open Working Group (OWG) on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in which it proposed SDGs at the conclusion of the 13th session (OWG 13), a number of Major Groups and civil society organizations have released papers and press releases commenting on the proposal. The majority of reactions suggest the outcome is a significant step forward, while also highlighting specific concerns. Many groups expressed appreciation for the OWG's inclusiveness, noting that full and meaningful participation of civil society is being recognized as an essential aspect of the new global agenda.
