UNESCO, Germany Establish Water Resources and Global Change Centre [viewed]

UNESCO9 July 2014: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Germany agreed to the establishment of a UNESCO category 2 centre for water resources and global change. The Centre, based in Koblenz, Germany, will undertake research and build capacity to understand the impacts of global change on water resources in order to facilitate sustainable and adaptive management.

ICCWC Strategic Mission, MIKES Launched as CITES SC65 Opens [viewed]

cites-iccwc7 July 2014: At a side event organized during the sixty-fifth meeting of the Standing Committee of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES SC65), the International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime (ICCWC) launched its Strategic Mission 2014-2016. The Mission sets forth the agenda to fight wildlife and forest crime, providing the first strategic framework for the consortium's activities and future directions since its establishment in late 2010.

Turkey Joins WAVES Partnership [viewed]

Event: WaterLinks Forum 2014 [viewed]

WaterLinks Forum 2014 will focus on urban water insecurity and wastewater efficiency in Asia and the Pacific through the lenses of climate change, disaster preparedness and water scarcity. Technical presentations will take place on water loss reduction, wastewater management and reuse, water quality monitoring and management, and climate change resilience. The Forum will also include a partnership matchmaking and networking session, and an innovation and knowledge fair. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) supports WaterLinks through the Water Operators Partnerships (WOPs) Program. WaterLinks is organizing the Forum with support from ADB, the International Water Association (IWA), the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Global Water Operators' Partnerships Alliance.

UNFF Briefs States on UNFF 11, IAF Assessment and SDGs, New Director Announced [viewed]

Unff2 July 2014: The Chair of the Bureau (Gabon) of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) provided a briefing, following a meeting of the Bureau, regarding the 11th session of the UNFF, activities taking place between UNFF 10 and 11, and forests on the post-2015 development agenda. The new Director of UNFF, effective 1 September 2014, was also announced during the briefing.

Managers Discuss Challenges Facing Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves [viewed]

Unesco1 July 2014: Representatives from 26 biosphere reserves from 19 countries issued a joint statement following the Fourth Meeting of the Global Network of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves. The statement notes challenges and threats faced by these sites related to climate change and natural disasters; water, energy and food self-sufficiency; and waste management.

European Conference Discusses 'No Net Loss' for Biodiversity [viewed]

EUJuly 2014: The report of a global conference on approaches to avoid, minimize, restore and offset biodiversity loss, titled 'To No Net Loss of Biodiversity and Beyond,' presents lessons and ideas exchanged during the conference as well as major themes and cross-cutting issues. The conference was held under the EU's 'No Net Loss Initiative,' an initiative in support of the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2020.
