UNEP Report: Closing the Emissions Gap Increasingly Unlikely [viewed]

UNEP5 November 2013: Ahead of the 19th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 19), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released the '2013 Emissions Gap Report,' which involved 44 scientific groups in 17 countries. The emissions gap in 2020 is the difference between emission levels in 2020 consistent with meeting climate targets, and levels expected in that year if country pledges and commitments are met.

Event: Rural Energy Access: A Nexus Approach to Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication [viewed]

UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA), in collaboration with Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL), UN-Energy and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), is organizing this event to strengthen capacities on policy, technical and entrepreneurial approaches to rural energy access for eradicating poverty. Specific objectives of the conference include, among others: promoting dialogue among practitioners, experts, donors and policy-makers; assessing potential integrated policy options to address rural energy poverty; identify synergies between energy and other development factors including health, education, economic growth, gender, water and food security; discussing ways to apply models and practices to scale-up clean cookstoves and renewable energy home systems; and supporting the Rio+20 follow-up process and the post-2015 development agenda.

IMO Meeting Adopts Amendments to Regulate Marine Geoengineering [viewed]

Members of Scientific Advisory Board Appointed [viewed]

UNESCO18 October 2013: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has reported on the appointment of the 26 members of the UN Secretary-General's Scientific Advisory Board. The Board will seek to influence and shape action by the international community to advance sustainable development and eradicate poverty. The first session of the Board will take place at the beginning of 2014.
