Event: Third International Conference on the Use of Space Technology for Water Management [viewed]

The UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), the Government of Morocco and the Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water are jointly co-organizing this conference, with the European Space Agency and the Inter-Islamic Network on Space Sciences and Technology as co-sponsors. The Conference will discuss how space technology can contribute in better managing water resources, including combating desertification, ensuring access to safe drinking water, and managing water-related emergencies in developing countries.

Event: 55th Session Advisory Committee on Sustainable Forest-based Industries [viewed]

Organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the advisory committee on sustainable forest-based industries (ACSFI) annual meeting brings together senior executives from private sector forest industries. The meeting will consider country reports, review past and ongoing activities of the ACSFI, consider related activities by FAO and review actions under the International Council of Forest and Paper Associations (ICFPA).

Event: 21st Session of the Intergovernmental Council of UNESCO IHP [viewed]

The 21st session of the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) Intergovernmental Council of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will: guide and supervise from the scientific and from the organizational point of view on the implementation of the programme; study proposals concerning development and modification of the programme and plans for implementation; recommend scientific projects of interest to member States and assess priorities among such projects; coordinate international cooperation of the member Sates in the framework of the Programme; make necessary proposals for coordinating the Programme with those conducted by international organizations concerned; assist in the development of regional and national projects related to the programme; and take any practical or scientific measures that may be required for the successful implementation of the programme.

CGIAR Funding Doubles to $1 Billion [viewed]

CGIAR17 December 2013: The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) has announced a doubling of its funding of $500 million in 2008 to $1 billion in 2013. CGIAR officials say that the commitment could help lift 150 million people in Asia out of poverty through higher rice yields, provide 12 million households in Africa with sustainable irrigation, and prevent 1.7 million hectares of deforestation.
