CIF Expands to 63 Countries [viewed]

CIF28 June 2014: During meetings of the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) Trust Fund Committees and Sub-Committees, decisions were taken inviting 14 developing countries to join the Scaling Up Renewable Energy in Low Income Countries Program (SREP) and an additional country to participate in the Clean Technology Fund (CTF), expanding the total number of CIF countries to 63.

US DOE Calls for Integrated Approaches to Water-Energy Nexus [viewed]

doe18 June 2014: The water-energy nexus calls for the urgent adoption of integrated and proactive approaches to address the mounting complexities of climate change, population growth and technological development, according to a report released by the US Department of Energy (US DOE). The report presents an array of technical and operational challenges at regional, national and local scales, as well as a strategy for addressing them.

Hutchison Medal Recognizes Ocean Fertilization Paper [viewed]

UNESCO IOC18 June 2014: The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) awarded the Hutchison medal to a team of authors for their paper, titled 'Ocean Fertilization for Geoengineering: A Review of Effectiveness, Environmental Impacts and Emerging Governance.' The award recognizes it as a "practical and wide-ranging, philosophical or thought-provoking" paper that will "stimulate further debate within the chemical engineering community."

ICRAF and SEI Brief on Sustainable Firewood and Charcoal in Kenya [viewed]

World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF)16 June 2014: The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) released two technical briefs on the sustainability of charcoal and firewood use in Kenya. The reports note that, in Kenya, charcoal and firewood production support the livelihoods of more than 2 million people. However, firewood is not yet adequately included in energy policies.

UNECA Reports on Energy Access and Security in Eastern Africa [viewed]

UNECA10 June 2014: The UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) has launched a report detailing the state of energy access and security in 14 Eastern African countries. The report finds that Eastern Africa's population has one of the lowest electricity access rates in the world, ranging from 1% in the State of South Sudan (9.3 million people without access) to 22.5% in Ethiopia (nearly 64.5 million without access).

World Bank Announces GEF Grants for Pollution Control Activities in the Adriatic Sea [viewed]

World Bank11 June 2014: The World Bank has announced the approval of two Global Environment Facility (GEF) grants for the Adriatic Sea Environmental Pollution Control Project for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. The project will focus on reducing the discharge of pollutants into the Adriatic Sea and strengthen government capacity to monitor sea water quality.

UNECE, FAO Support SFM in Central Asia, Turkey [viewed]

FAO UNECE4 June 2014: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Forestry and Timber Section held a capacity building workshop for forest product statistics in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Caucasus. FAO has announced renewed partnership with the Turkish Government to address forests and food security in the region.

Event: Third Session of the CGRFA Technical Working Group on Forest Genetic Resources [viewed]

The third session of the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Forest Genetic Resources of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA) will address issues related to the Global Plan of Action on Forest Genetic Resources, genetic diversity and climate change, biodiversity and nutrition, application and integration of biotechnologies, and access and benefit-sharing for forest genetic resources.

CTCN Receives Requests for Support from Six Countries [viewed]

ctcn2 June 2014: The UN's Climate Technology Center and Network (CTCN) has received eight requests for technology assistance from Afghanistan, Bhutan, Chile, Colombia, Honduras and Pakistan. Countries requested CTCN support for climate actions related to: renewable energy policies; public transportation; biodiversity monitoring; and coastal protection through saving mangrove forests.
