Event: International Conference on Ecohydrology [viewed]

The International Conference on Ecohydrology aims to synthesize information and knowledge gaps to address issues related to aquatic ecosystems; and to assess how ecohydrology and ecotechnology could provide low cost environmentally sound technology for sustainable water management, especially in the Asia Pacific region. The meeting will be held in conjunction with the 22nd meeting of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) International Hydrological Programme (IHP) Regional Steering Committee for Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

Social Pre-COP Preparatory Event Issues Margarita Declaration [viewed]

logo-precop18 July 2014: A preparatory event for the Social Pre-COP on Climate Change, organized by the Government of Venezuela, resulted in the "Margarita Declaration on Climate Change," which contains views of participating organizations and movements structured around the themes of intergenerational equality and rights, and good and sustainable living. The results of the preparatory event will be presented to the UN Secretary General's Climate Summit in September 2014.

UNCTAD and CITES Partner to Enhance Tracking of Traded Species [viewed]

CITES-UNCTAD logos17 July 2014: The Secretariats of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on a set of tools that will help customs authorities regulate the import and export of CITES-listed species.

UNEP and Partners Build Capacity on Food Security in India and Uganda [viewed]

UNEP15 July 2014: Studies by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and partners analyzing the relationship between ecosystem inputs, and agricultural yields and farm incomes in India and Uganda have found significant potential for improving food security through shifts in cropping patterns and use of water and energy saving technologies. The findings aim to strengthen the two countries' capacities to address their increasing food security deficits and decline in ecosystem services.

ESCAP Workshop Supports Drought Monitoring in Asia-Pacific [viewed]

UNESCAP1 July 2014: A workshop on drought monitoring and early warning organized by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the Sri Lankan Ministry of Technology and Research focused on strategies and sharing of good practices to reduce the negative impacts of agricultural drought. Recommendations from the workshop will support strengthening of the ESCAP Regional Drought Mechanism as well as national disaster management plans in the Asia-Pacific region.
