Event: Global Network Conference on Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production [viewed]

This conference on Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) will showcase 20 years of delivering RECP services to industry and identify areas of interest and potential partnership at the national, regional and global levels within the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, this conference will: explore innovative approaches to RECP through exchanging best practices and sharing success stories and replicable solutions; address such topics as low-carbon production, chemicals management, water resources, eco-industrial parks, waste management and gender mainstreaming; and provide the opportunity to chart a path forward for RECP promotion. This conference will bring together senior government officials, international RECP practitioners, representatives of development financial institutions, and cleaner production experts from research institutions and academia. The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), in cooperation with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), is organizing the conference. The Conference will be held in conjunction with the World Resources Forum 2015.

The joint Programme on RECP aims to improve resource efficiency and the environmental performance of businesses and other organizations through scaling up and mainstreaming the application of RECP methods, techniques and policies.

UNGA Transmits Post-2015 Agenda for Summit Action [viewed]

post20151 September 2015: The 69th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution transmitting the outcome document of the UN Summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda, titled 'Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,' to the UNGA's 70th session, for action during the Summit. The resolution (A/69/L.85) also welcomes the “successful conclusion” of the negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda and the outcome document, which was agreed by consensus at an informal meeting of the plenary on 2 August 2015.

Researchers Developing Mutant Plant Varieties to Address Climate Change-Related Problems [viewed]

August 2015 Climate1 September 2015: During August 2015, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Adaptation Fund reported on climate finance developments, including new funding, project lessons and institutional developments. The World Bank, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) DTU Partnership (UDP) and the Partnership for Market Readiness (PMR) released publications and event news.

FAO, IFAD Highlight Water Infrastructure and Information Needs for Agricultural Productivity [viewed]

ifad_fao24 August 2015: UN agencies highlighted their work in improving water productivity for agricultural development at World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden, including the improvement of water infrastructure for smallholders, and the use of satellite data in planning and management. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) launched an open-access data portal to help countries better analyze water productivity and plan agricultural development, while the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) drew attention to irrigation improvements.

ISC 2015 Calls for Greater Action to Protect Soils [viewed]

isc-iys21 August 2015: Participants attending the International Soil Conference (ISC 2015), titled 'Sustainable Uses of Soil in Harmony with Food Security,' called for greater action to stop the degradation of soils in order to enhance food security and sustainable development. The four-day conference was organized by Thailand's Land Development Department, with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and other partners, under the auspices of the International Year of Soils (IYS).

Stockholm World Water Week Focuses on Water for Development [viewed]

SIWI24 August 2015: World Water Week, organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), marks its silver jubilee in Stockholm, Sweden, with a focus on water for development. SIWI notes that, although considerable progress has been made towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the targets to achieve improved access to key basic services during the first 15 years of this century will not be fully reached. It adds that about one billion people worldwide still lack access to safe water, and a higher number lack access to basic sanitation.

Event: Solutions Summit [viewed]

On the sidelines of the three-day UN Summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda, the Solutions Summit will seek to highlight "exceptional innovators" (technologists, engineers, scientists, and others) who are developing solutions that address one or more of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and also seek to catalyze a grassroots effort, where communities scout and convene resources around solution-makers. During the event, a group of 17-20 global innovators will be invited to give a 'lightning talk outlining their breakthrough efforts' to senior policymakers, investors, and industry leaders. The Solutions Summit is led by the UN Foundation, Project Everyone, and the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS), in collaboration with the US' White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, the Kenyan Ministry of Information Communications and Technology, and the Estonian Information System Authority, with an open invitation for other governments and collaborators to join.

unredd3 August 2015: Efforts to prepare forest countries to implement the UNFCCC REDD+ guidelines are highlighted in the August/September 2015 edition of 'The REDD+ Resource,' the newsletter of the UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD). The newsletter also features the UN-REDD Programme's publications, as well as expert insights on upcoming events, such as the World Forestry Congress and the Paris Climate Change Conference.
