Event: Analysis and Management of Changing Risks for Natural Hazards [viewed]

This conference is the culmination of two European Commission (EC) projects: Changing Hydro-meteorological Risks as Analyzed by a New Generation of European Scientists (CHANGES); and Increasing Resilience through Earth Observation (IncREO). It aims to facilitate the exchange of ideas related to effective risk management strategies. Participants will also discuss research results on the effects of changing hydro-meteorological risks and the development of innovative methodologies for quantitative hazard and risk forecasts. Sessions will take place on: ecosystem-based approaches to disaster management; forecasting future changes in hydro-meteorological triggers; using remote sensing techniques to generate asset maps; modeling changes in societal parameters to characterize exposure and vulnerability; modeling changes in natural risks and risk scenarios; adapting risk management to future changes; risk communication; geo-information and visualization tools for risk assessments; and transferability of multi-hazard risk assessment methods to developing countries.

FAO, IFAD, WFP Launch Community of Practice on Food Loss Reduction [viewed]

WFP FAO IFAD24 October 2014: The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP) launched a digital platform to tackle food loss during a side event to the 41st session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), which took place in Rome, Italy, on 13 October 2014. The platform allows stakeholders to share best practices and access resources on food loss reduction and post-harvest management.

Bio-Bridge Initiative Launched at CBD COP 12 [viewed]

CBD17 October 2014: At the margins of the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12), the Republic of Korea launched the Bio-Bridge Initiative, a platform meant to link developing countries' demand for and developed countries' provision of science and technology, supporting the achievement of CBD goals and targets.

UNITAR Teaches Permaculture in Bangladesh [viewed]

Unitar25 September 2014: The UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) organized a training on permaculture design for members of 42 communities in the Khulna district of Bangladesh. The course included elements of both climate change mitigation and adaptation, covering such topics as sustainable village design, water management and construction of climate changed-adapted houses.

Event: 76th Session of UNECE CHLM [viewed]

The UN Economic Commission for Europe's (UNECE) Committee on Housing and Land Management (CHLM) will hold its 76th session to review its work and discuss issues involving housing, land management and urban development, including standards for energy efficiency in housing, smart cities, and implementation of the Strategy for Sustainable Housing and Land Management in the ECE Region for the Period 2014-2020. The session will also agree on CHLM input into HABITAT III, the global Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development.

FAO Launches Software for Forest Monitoring [viewed]

FAO10 October 2014: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) announced the launch of Open Foris, a suite of open source software tools to monitor forest inventory. Piloted in ten countries, the tools allow for data entry on smart phones or tablets.

Event: IEA Bioenergy Conference 2015 [viewed]

The 2015 International Energy Agency (IEA) Bioenergy Conference will center on recent research and market developments in bioenergy, including: challenges across bioenergy value chains; and cross-cutting topics, such as environmental sustainability, socioeconomic issues and trade. The conference will include a special session dedicated to industrial developments and applications, which will feature presentations on German developments. In addition to presentations, the event will include opportunities for business-to-business meetings, a social programme, technical field trips, and a poster exhibition. The conference is supported by the German Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

Event: IFPRI Workshop on Biofuels and Food Security Interactions [viewed]

This workshop, organized by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), will explore present and future interactions between biofuels and food security, and draw lessons from analysis and field experience relevant for project developers, researchers and policymakers. The event will be organized around six discussion topics: economic security and development; energy security; environmental security; biofuels and food price volatility; institutional aspects, innovation and consequences of inaction; and integration and cross-cutting issues. Aimed at participants from the academia, international organizations active in the field, governmental organizations, the private sector and other interested parties, the workshop will seek to identify areas of consensus regarding barriers, gaps and opportunities related to: the assessment of biofuel-food security interactions; and recommendations for future research and implementation.

CCXG Forum Addresses Climate Policy Linkages, Energy and Land Transformations [viewed]

oecd.iea17 September 2014: The Climate Change Expert Group (CCXG) held its second Global Forum in 2014, bringing together country delegates and experts for an informal dialogue on, inter alia, streamlining the UNFCCC process, enhancing coordination and linkages, financing mitigation and adaptation, transforming the land and energy sectors and stimulating clean energy research and development (R&D).

COAG Highlights Family Farming as Part of Food Security, Nutrition, Rural Development [viewed]

FAO3 October 2014: Participants at the 24th session of the Committee on Agriculture (COAG) recognized the importance of family farming in food and nutrition security, natural resource management, rural development and sustainable agriculture. Meeting for the biannual session in Rome, Italy, from 29 September-3 October 2014, participants also discussed approaches to moving towards sustainable agriculture.
