Access to Genetic Resources & Benefit-sharing

Event: WIPO Workshop for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities on Intellectual Property and Traditional Knowledge [viewed]

Organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), this workshop will include about 14 participants from each of the seven geo-cultural regions recognized by the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. It aims to: impart basic knowledge of the main principles of the intellectual property system from a traditional knowledge perspective; explain the negotiations taking place in the WIPO Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC); and raise awareness of the available intellectual property tools and WIPO materials that are relevant to the protection of traditional knowledge.

Event: Nagoya Protocol on ABS COP/MOP-1 [viewed]

The first meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS) will be held during the second week of CBD COP-12. It will address, among other issues, the ABS clearing-house, compliance, capacity building and awareness-raising, and the need for and modalities of a global multilateral benefit-sharing mechanism.

CBD Reacts to Recognition of Biodiversity in SDG Proposal [viewed]

CBD25 July 2014: Biodiversity and ecosystems are included throughout the 17 goals and 169 targets proposed by the Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The CBD describes the OWG's final outcome as “extremely positive from the perspective of the CBD and the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets,” noting the agreement sets the stage for better links between the implementation of the CBD's agenda and the post-2015 development agenda.

IGC 28 Reviews Cross-Cutting Elements, Forwards Texts to WIPO General Assembly [viewed]

Wipo18 July 2014: At its 28th session, the Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) reviewed cross-cutting elements of the negotiating texts on genetic resources, traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions, and decided to forward the three negotiating draft texts as developed during IGC 26 and 27 to the WIPO General Assembly, to be held in September 2014.

FAO Steering Committee Discusses ITPGR Action Plan for Near East and North Africa [viewed]

ABS Protocol Receives 50 Ratifications, Enters into Force on 12 October 2014 [viewed]

CBD14 July 2014: Following the most recent ratifications by Switzerland and Uruguay, the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has gathered the required number of ratifications to enter into force.

ABS Protocol Reaches 48 Ratifications [viewed]

CBD11 July 2014: Niger, Burundi, the Gambia, Madagascar, Mozambique, Sudan and Peru ratified the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) in July 2014, bringing the total number of ratifications to 48.
