Working Group Discusses Scope, Parameters and Feasibility of Agreement on BBNJ [viewed]

United Nations19 June 2014: The eighth meeting of the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ) worked to clarify a series of substantive elements of a new agreement on BBNJ that were considered necessary to prepare recommendations to the UNGA at the next meeting of the Working Group, scheduled to take place in January 2015.

Event: First Session of the CGRFA Team of Technical and Legal Experts on ABS (TTLE ABS-1) [viewed]

GEF Council Considers 2020 Strategy, GEF-6 [viewed]

gefcouncilmeeting27 May 2014: The 46th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council convened immediately prior to the 5th meeting of the GEF Assembly. The Council considered, inter alia, the long term strategy for the GEF, co-financing policy, the GEF-5 Work Program, and the Work program and budget of the GEF Independent Evaluation office. Agenda items specific to the sixth replenishment period of the GEF Trust Fund (GEF-6) included a proposal for the System of Transparent Allocation of Resources (STAR) for GEF-6, implementation arrangements for the GEF Small Grants Programme, and a summary of the negotiations of the Sixth Replenishment of the GEF Trust Fund.

Ad Hoc Working Group of the Whole Provides Update on its Assessment of the Marine Environment [viewed]

United Nations22 April 2014: The Ad Hoc Working Group of the Whole on the Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects (Regular Process), has submitted a report on its work to the UN General Assembly (UNGA). The report includes recommendations for the 69th Session of the UNGA, guidance for the preparation of the first global integrated marine assessment and an outline of the assessment.

Nagoya Protocol Reaches 34 Ratifications [viewed]

CBD1 May 2014: Guyana, Hungary, Kenya and Viet Nam ratified the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) in April 2014, followed by Denmark, which ratified on 1 May 2014, bringing the total number ratifications to 34.
