Event: Third Meeting of the ITPGR Working Group to Enhance the Functioning of the MLS [viewed]

The Third Meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-Ended Working Group to Enhance the Functioning of the Multilateral System (MLS) of Access and Benefit-Sharing of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) will be preceded by a day of regional and inter-regional consultations. According to its terms of reference, the Working Group is to develop a range of measures that will increase user-based payments and contributions to the ITPGR Benefit-Sharing Fund in a sustainable and predictable long-term manner, and enhance the functioning of the MLS by additional measures. As of 27 March 2015, the original dates of 21-24 April are expected to change; new dates will be communicated in agreement with the host government.

CGRFA Finalizes State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources Report; Agrees on Guidelines on ABS and Genetic Diversity for Climate Adaptation [viewed]

cgrfa1526 January 2015: The fifteenth session of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN's (FAO) Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA 15) addressed a series of sectoral and cross-sectoral issues, including: animal, forest and plant genetic resources; access and benefit-sharing (ABS) for genetic resources for food and agriculture (GRFA); biodiversity and nutrition; and climate change and GRFA. The session was held from 19-23 January 2015, in Rome, Italy.

BBNJ Working Group Concludes Mandate, Agrees on Nature of Future Instrument [viewed]

BBNJ23 January 2015: Delegates at the ninth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ) reached consensus on the legally binding nature of a future agreement on the conservation and sustainable use of BBNJ under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Tonga Joins ITPGR [viewed]

ITPGR21 January 2015: Tonga deposited the instrument of accession to the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) on 16 December 2014, and will become a Party on 16 March 2015, bringing the number of ITPGR Parties to 134.

For ten years negotiators in New York have been debating, under the aegis of the UN General Assembly, the need for a new international agreement to protect biodiversity in the deep seas. A final decision is expected by the end of 2015, following key negotiations on 20-23 January 2015 on the feasibility, scope and parameters of a new treaty.

Event: CBD 19th Meeting of SBSTTA and 9th Meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions of the Convention [viewed]

The nineteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 19) and the ninth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will be held back-to-back. SBSTTA 19 will convene from 2-5 November. The Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions of the CBD will convene from 4-7 November.

The ‘Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization' to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has been hailed as a giant step towards the implementation of the third objective of the CBD: the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources, including by appropriate access to them. Implementing this third objective will contribute, it is hoped, to the conservation of biological diversity and the sustainable use of its components, the other two objectives of the CBD.
