CBD Secretariat Circulates Provisional Programme and Briefing Notes for COP 12 High-Level Segment [viewed]

cop1415 September 2014: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has circulated the provisional programme and briefing notes for the High-Level Segment of the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the CBD, prepared by the Government of the Republic of Korea, in consultation with the CBD Secretariat. The CBD COP 12 High-Level Segment will be held from 15-16 October 2014, under the theme 'Biodiversity for Sustainable Development.'

The Marshall Islands Ratify ITPGR [viewed]

Coffee Gene Sequencing Project Supports Climate Adaptation [viewed]

idb-fontagro11 September 2014: The complete sequence of the coffee genome has been released into the public domain in an attempt to accelerate plant variety selection in the face of climate change and to meet growers' specific needs. The genetic information of the Coffea arabica and Coffea eugenioides species, containing the location and characterization of more than 30,000 genes, was presented during the Conference of the Association for Science and Information on Coffee (ASIC), held 8-13 September in Armenia, Colombia.

Event: ITPGR High-Level Expert Workshop on Food Crops for Agriculture in Changing Climate: An Expert Communiqué [viewed]

To be held on the sidelines of the UN Climate Summit, this Expert Workshop will address the role of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) in addressing the challenges of producing more nutritious food on less land under the influence of climate change. The workshop will cover activities and initiatives under the Treaty in three segments: conservation and management of crop diversity; the Treaty systems for downstream use of crop diversity; and breeding and making available climate-smart varieties to farmers.

Event: CBD Capacity-Building Workshop on the ABS Clearing-House [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) back-to-back with the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties (COP/MOP 1) to the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS), this workshop aims to launch the operational phase of the ABS Clearing-House and improve understanding of the role of the ABS Clearing-House for supporting implementation of the Protocol. It will also include a hands-on training on registering and retrieving information through the ABS Clearing-House for publishing authorities and national authorized users.

Event: Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) in Latin America and the Caribbean [viewed]

DIVERSITAS, the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT), the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the International Council for Science's Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (ICSU ROLAC) will hold a side event at the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the CBD, on the topic 'Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) in Latin America and the Caribbean: A science-policy dialogue for academic research'. This side event will introduce the relevance of article 8.a of the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS) for facilitated access for academic research, and highlight the importance of a science-policy dialogue to implement ABS and the benefits derived from research.

SPREP8 August 2014: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) held a training workshop, titled 'Mutually Agreed Terms: Contracts for Making Access and Benefit Sharing Possible,' to prepare Pacific Island States for the upcoming implementation of the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS).
