Event: Eighth Meeting of the CBD Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions [viewed]

The Working Group on Article 8(j) (traditional knowledge) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is expected to continue consideration of tasks 7 (equitable benefit-sharing), 10 (development of standards and guidelines for the reporting and prevention of unlawful appropriation of traditional knowledge), 12 (exchange and dissemination of information) and 15 (repatriation of traditional knowledge) of the work programme on Article 8(j); and consider a draft plan of action on customary sustainable use, as well as the matter of terminology related to "indigenous peoples and local communities." An in-depth dialogue will be held on "connecting traditional knowledge systems and science, such as under the IPBES, including gender dimensions".

Event: ICNP 3 [viewed]

The third meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit-sharing (ABS) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is expected to address, among others, issues related to compliance, a global multilateral benefit-sharing mechanism, the ABS clearing-house, and monitoring and reporting, and will exchange views on the state of implementation of the Protocol, and on sectoral and cross-sectoral model contractual clauses, codes of conduct and guidelines.

Event: Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Forest Genetic Resources - Second Session [viewed]

The second session of the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Forest Genetic Resources will convene at FAO headquarters from 23-25 January 2013. It will be convened under the Regular Programme of the Organization. The Thirteenth Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA 13) requested the Working Group on Forest Genetic Resources to meet before CGRFA 14, which will convene from 15-19 April 2013, to review the draft report on The State of the World's Forest Genetic Resources and priority areas for action, as identified in Country Reports and regional consultations; and to review and evaluate options for a follow-up, and make recommendations to the Commission.

India, Fiji and Ethiopia Ratify ABS Protocol [viewed]

CBD20 November 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has reported that India ratified the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the CBD in October 2012, during the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the CBD. Fiji and Ethiopia also acceded to the Protocol, on 24 October and 16 November 2012, respectively.

Partnership between ICRAF and Mars Inc. Supports West African Cocoa Production [viewed]

20 November 2012: In an effort to increase smallholder production of cocoa in Cote d'Ivoire and West Africa more broadly, the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) and the chocolate company, Mars, Inc. have joined together under the "Vision for Change: Sustainable Cocoa Communities" project to undertake a series of activities and research to develop improved cocoa varieties, secure markets and look for climate change adaptation and mitigation opportunities.
