Event: CBD Informal Meeting on Nagoya Protocol Articles 19 and 20 [viewed]

Organized by Japan and the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies, in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this informal meeting will discuss model contractual clauses, voluntary codes of conduct, guidelines and best practices and/or standards, as set out in Articles 19 and 20 of the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS). The meeting also aims to assist governments in their implementation of the Nagoya Protocol by increasing awareness of different approaches used by relevant sectors involved in ABS activities.

UNEP Releases Report on Potential Contribution of Medicinal Plants to Nepalese Green Economy [viewed]

UNEP28 February 2013: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), in collaboration with the Government of Nepal and financed by German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), has released a report titled “BioTrade: Harnessing the potential for transitioning to a green economy - The Case of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in Nepal.” The report suggests that the growing global demand for medicinal and aromatic plants could help drive Nepal's green economy, as well as improve livelihoods in its poorest communities.

ITPGR Secretariat Calls for Submissions on the MLS [viewed]

20 February 2013: The Secretariat of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) has issued a notification drawing parties' attention to a list of decisions of the ITPGR Governing Body at its fourth session, held in March 2011 in Bali, Indonesia, concerning the operation of the Treaty's Multilateral System (MLS) of access and benefit-sharing (ABS), and has requested the submission of information to that regard.

CGRFA Releases Report of Sixth Technical Meeting on Plant Genetic Resources [viewed]

FAOJanuary 2013: The Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA) of Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released the report of the sixth meeting of the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (PGRFA), held from 14-16 November 2012, in Rome, Italy. The Working Group's recommendations will be considered by the CGRFA at its 14th meeting, to be held from 15-19 April 2013, in Rome, Italy.

General Assembly Launches International Year of Quinoa [viewed]

20 February 2013: The UN General Assembly launched the International Year of Quinoa with a High-Level Panel discussion during its plenary at UN Headquarters in New York. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Bolivian President Evo Morales and First Lady of Peru Nadine Heredia participated in the launch, which will be celebrated under the theme "A future sown thousands of years ago."
