Event: Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture [viewed]

The Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food Security will examine the implementation of the Second Global Plan of Action for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. It will also examine a review of the draft updated Genebank Standards, the process for the preparatoin of the Third Report on the State of the World's Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, the status and trends in teh conservation and use of micro-organisms and invertebrates in rice and root crop-based production systems, and access and benefit-sharing for plant genetic resources.

Event: Ad Hoc Technical Working Group on Access and Benefit-sharing for Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture [viewed]

In 2011, the Commission decided to establish an Ad Hoc Technical Working Group on Access and Benefit-sharing for Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture and requested the Director-General of FAO to convene a three-day meeting of the Working Group. The Members of the Working Group, as elected by the Commission at its Thirteenth Regular Session, include, from Africa: Cameroon, Eritrea, Togo, Tunisia, Zambia; from Asia: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, Lao (People's Democratic Republic), Thailand; from Europe: Norway, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, UK; from Latin America and the Caribbean: Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay; from Near East: Iran (Islamic Republic of), Lebanon, Yemen; from North America: Canada, US; and from Southwest Pacific: Australia, Cook Islands.

CCAFS Report Focuses on Genetic Diversity in Agricultural Adaptation to Climate Change [viewed]

August 2012: Considering the importance of genetic diversity to successful agricultural adaptation, the Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Program (CCAFS) has released a working paper that outlines the experience of eight centres of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) with reorganizing their activities to work on climate change adaptation.

FAO and Bioversity International Release Book Calling for Sustainable Diets and Food Biodiversity [viewed]

8 August 2012: A new book, titled "Sustainable Diets and Biodiversity: Directions and Solutions for Policy, Research and Action," urges action to promote sustainable diets and food biodiversity for the health of humans and the Earth. The book contains the proceedings of the International Scientific Symposium titled "Biodiversity and Sustainable Diets United Against Hunger," which convened in November 2010.

BioCAN Promotes Best Practices in Sharing Benefits from Biodiversity [viewed]

12 July 2012: The Andean Community's (CAN) biodiversity program, BioCAN, held a workshop aimed at sharing concepts and tools for improving the benefits of products derived from biodiversity and sustainable management of wild species. Participants addressed how best to organize pilot projects, with a focus on lessons learned, and discussed building a set of subregional guidelines on best practice in benefit sharing along the value chain for such products.

Nagoya Protocol Committee Adopts Recommendations on Future Work, Financial Issues [viewed]

6 July 2012: The second meeting of the Open-ended Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol (ICNP) on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted eight recommendations setting the groundwork for the Protocol's implementation and entry into force.

High-Level Round Table on ITPGR Convenes in Rio [viewed]

21 June 2012: The Second High-Level Round Table on the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) took place at the Rio Centro, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 21 June 2012, during the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The event was co-organized by Brazil and Italy, under the patronship of the High-level Task Force of the Benefit-sharing Fund of the ITPGR.
