IUCN Releases Methodological Handbook for National Land Restoration [viewed]

IUCN21 March 2014: A methodology published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and developed in partnership with the World Resources Institute (WRI), offers guidance to countries for assessing their potential for land restoration, in light of the 2011 Bonn Challenge to restore 150 million hectares of degraded and deforested lands by 2020. The methodology is presented in a handbook on the Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM), to help countries identify where and how much of their land can be restored, and determine where restoration carries the most societal value.

Bioversity International Case Study Explores Community-Based Biodiversity Management in Nepal [viewed]

Bioversity International13 March 2014: Bioversity International has published a case study on community-based biodiversity management (CBM) for watershed restoration in the Kaski District of Nepal. The study reports lessons from Bioversity International's work with Local Initiatives for Biodiversity, Research and Development (LI-BIRD), alongside other national and international research organizations, to organize local groups in the region to develop and advance CBM activities, including participatory plant breeding, training workshops and community seedbanks.

CPF Meeting Stresses SDG Links to Existing Targets [viewed]

5 February 2014: The Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) has released the report of its meeting held 5 February 2015 focusing on the consideration of forests by the Open Working Group (OWG) on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Overall, the meeting reiterated the importance of developing forest-related targets within the SDGs that are clearly linked to existing goals and targets.

IRP, UN-REDD Report Highlights Role of REDD+ in the Green Economy [viewed]

UNEP20 March 2014: The International Resource Panel (IRP) and the UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation (UN-REDD) have released a report on the role of REDD+ in transitioning to a green economy. The report, titled 'Building National Capital - How REDD+ can support a Green Economy,' highlights the urgent need for US$30 billion in funding to ensure REDD+ implementation and to contribute to green economy transformations, noting that this is less than 7 percent of annual fossil fuel subsidies.

Event: FCPF Carbon Fund Ninth Meeting (CF9) [viewed]

The meeting of the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) Carbon Fund will review funding proposals from Chile, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Mexico, Nepal, Peru, and the Republic of the Congo. The meeting will also consider General Conditions of a future Emission Reductions Payment Agreement (ERPA) and review the Pricing Approach.

Bioversity International Explores Dry Forest Restoration in Colombia [viewed]

Bioversity InternationalMarch 2014: Bioversity International released a poster report on best practices and protocols for ecosystem restoration in tropical dry forests in Colombia, where only 8% of original extent remains. The report notes the importance of selecting species and designing restoration interventions based on genetic considerations, species functional traits and the projected impacts of climate change.
