Event: Third Session of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Plenary [viewed]

The third session of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) plenary will review progress made on the adopted IPBES work programme for 2014 – 2018, including the related budget and institutional arrangements for its implementation. In addition, the third session of the IPBES plenary will select the members of the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) based on the nominations received from governments. The event will be preceded by consultations and a stakeholder day on 10-11 January.

ICCWC Strategic Mission, MIKES Launched as CITES SC65 Opens [viewed]

cites-iccwc7 July 2014: At a side event organized during the sixty-fifth meeting of the Standing Committee of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES SC65), the International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime (ICCWC) launched its Strategic Mission 2014-2016. The Mission sets forth the agenda to fight wildlife and forest crime, providing the first strategic framework for the consortium's activities and future directions since its establishment in late 2010.

UN Report Highlights MDG Targets Within Reach [viewed]

United Nations7 July 2014: Many of the currently unfulfilled Millennium Development Goal (MDG) targets are within reach by 2015, according to 'The Millennium Development Goals Report 2014.' The report provides updates on progress toward fulfilling the MDGs and their targets at global and regional levels. Launching the report, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underscored that “achievements have been uneven between goals, among and within regions and countries and between population groups.”

Africa Carbon Forum Calls for Suitable Mechanisms [viewed]

ITTO TTM Highlights Contribution of Plantations to Markets [viewed]

Itto1 July 2014: The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) launched the 16-30 June issue of the Tropical Timber Market (TTM) Report, which highlights that, according to a study by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), a third of all industrial roundwood is produced in plantations even though plantations only account for 7% of the world's forest areas.

Event: CBD Workshop on Synergies between REDD+ and Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration in NBSAPs [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and the Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC), this workshop aims to support Central African countries in: the development of national targets and plans for ecosystem conservation and restoration within the framework of the Aichi targets; integrating targets, as well as REDD+ actions, into updated national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs); and demonstrating the appropriate data-gathering processes, assessments, policies and tools for implementing a coherent approach to targets and REDD+ actions.

Event: 12th Meeting of the UN-REDD Policy Board [viewed]

The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation (UN-REDD) will convene the 12th meeting of its Policy Board in order to reflect on the implications of Decisions from the 19th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The meeting will also consider the development of the UN-REDD Strategy for the period 2016-2021 and will consider National Programme Submission Forms from Argentina, Cote d'Ivoire and Mongolia.

UNFF Briefs States on UNFF 11, IAF Assessment and SDGs, New Director Announced [viewed]

Unff2 July 2014: The Chair of the Bureau (Gabon) of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) provided a briefing, following a meeting of the Bureau, regarding the 11th session of the UNFF, activities taking place between UNFF 10 and 11, and forests on the post-2015 development agenda. The new Director of UNFF, effective 1 September 2014, was also announced during the briefing.

UN-REDD Highlights UNEA Events and Outcomes [viewed]

UN-REDD Programme1 July 2014: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation (UN-REDD) released the July 2014 edition of its newsletter, which highlights a number of REDD+ related outcomes from the first UN Environmental Assembly (UNEA). In particular, the newsletter notes that during discussions on financing a green economy, REDD+ emerged as an opportunity for the promotion of sustainable development pathways.
