Global Biodiversity Strategy & Targets

Event: CBD Workshop on Synergies between REDD+ and Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration in NBSAPs [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and the Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC), this workshop aims to support Central African countries in: the development of national targets and plans for ecosystem conservation and restoration within the framework of the Aichi targets; integrating targets, as well as REDD+ actions, into updated national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs); and demonstrating the appropriate data-gathering processes, assessments, policies and tools for implementing a coherent approach to targets and REDD+ actions.

SBSTTA-18 Adopts Recommendations on Scientific Issues Related to Aichi Targets Implementation [viewed]

Chair-Hem-Pande28 June 2014: The 18th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) addressed a series of items related to the scientific base required for the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and its Aichi biodiversity targets, including the fourth edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO-4), marine- and climate-related issues, and invasive alien species (IAS).

Pacific Countries Announce Financial Contributions to Address IAS [viewed]

SPREP23 June 2014: Palau and Tonga have both announced financial commitments to address invasive alien species (IAS). These commitments will contribute to a Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) regional project on IAS, including the development and implementation of National Invasive Species Strategy and Action Plans (NISSAPs) in Pacific countries.

CBD WGRI 5 Adopts Recommendations on Strategic, Cooperation and Financial Issues [viewed]

Chair-Hem-Pande20 June 2014: The fifth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on the Review of Implementation (WGRI 5) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted recommendations to the CBD Conference of the Parties (COP) on a range of implementation, strategic and financial issues. An informal dialogue session held during the meeting focused on mainstreaming biodiversity in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and mobilization of resources for achieving the Aichi targets.

Event: SCBD Dialogue Forum on Integrating the Perspectives of ILCs in Applying Scientific Criteria for EBSAs [viewed]

The Secretariat of the CBD (SCBD) is holding a Dialogue Forum on Integrating the perspectives of Indigenous and Local Communities (ILCs) in the application of the scientific criteria for ecologically or biologically significant areas (EBSAs).

This event will review the EBSA process and scientific criteria in the context of the needs, interests and perspectives of ILCs, with the aim of enhancing the use of traditional knowledge in applying EBSA criteria. The event will: seek input from ILCs on the preparation of training materials and modules focused on integrating traditional knowledge in the use of the EBSA criteria; and identify partnership opportunities for future training material application. The event will consist of presentations, roundtable discussions and a summary by the co-chairs. The meeting will take place on the sidelines of the 18th meeting of the CBD Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA), which is taking place from 23-28 June 2014.

World Oceans Day Celebrated Globally [viewed]

World Oceans Day8 June 2014: The UN commemorated World Oceans Day on 8 June 2014, under the theme, 'Together we have the power to protect the ocean!' The Day also lent special attention to the designation of 2014 as the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and fell on the 20th anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Common Oceans Programme Addresses Fisheries Management and Biodiversity Conservation in ABNJ [viewed]

FAO-Common-OceansJune 2014: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a publication, titled ‘Common Oceans: Global Sustainable Fisheries Management and Biodiversity Conservation in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction.' The report introduces the Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ) Program, which focuses on tuna, deep-sea fisheries and biodiversity conservation.
