COP 19 Adopts Warsaw Framework for REDD+ [viewed]

UNFCCCNovember 2013: Parties at the 19th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 19) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) adopted the Warsaw Framework for REDD+. The framework includes seven decisions and builds on the Cancun Agreement on REDD+.

Event: CMS COP 11 [viewed]

Ecuador will host the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in November 2014, marking the first time that a CMS COP is held in Latin America. The decision was taken during the 41st Meeting of the Standing Committee, on 28 November 2013, in Bonn, Germany. The COP will be preceded by a High Level Ministerial meeting on 3 November. Another Standing Committee meeting will be held 9 November upon closure of the COP.

Event: CBD Capacity-Building Workshop for the Pacific on Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the aim of this workshop on ecosystem conservation and restoration to support achievement of the Aichi biodiversity targets is to assist Parties in: the development of national targets and plans for ecosystem conservation and restoration within the framework of Aichi targets 5, 11 and 15; the integration of these targets and plans into updated national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) and their mainstreaming into broader national policies, plans and programmes; and the use of assessment, policy and planning tools to promote ecosystem conservation and restoration at appropriate levels.

Event: CBD Second Dialogue Seminar on Scaling up Finance for Biodiversity [viewed]

Convened jointly by the Governments of Ecuador, India, Japan, Norway, the Republic of Korea, Sweden, Uganda and the European Commission, the second dialogue seminar aims to enhance mutual understanding of the different views and perspectives on financing for biodiversity. It will focus on the implementation of Aichi targets 2, 3 and 20 in the context of Decision XI/4 on resource mobilization and its three sections on target-setting, review of implementation of the strategy for resource mobilization and the roadmap. Particular attention will be given to the different ways of assessing the value of biodiversity and ecosystem services and the mechanisms to integrate these values into decision-making.

CBD LifeWeb Initiative Launches Zero Extinction Campaign [viewed]

LifeWeb13 November 2013: Launched by the LifeWeb Initiative of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and officially unveiled at the seventeenth meeting of the CBD Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA), the Zero Extinction Campaign aims to provide countries with a platform to profile their financial needs to prevent species extinctions and achieve related Aichi targets in the effort to stem biodiversity loss.

Conference on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Identifies Actions to Address Wildlife Crime [viewed]

interpol-unep6 November 2013: Participants at the First International Conference on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement highlighted the need for capacity building, improved intelligence capabilities and increased development of operational tools and toolkits as key action points to address the increasing threats posed by environmental crime, such as illegal trade in wildlife, timber and CFCs, and illegal shipments of waste.

Austria Provides US$2.2 Million through CBD LifeWeb Initiative [viewed]

LifeWeb31 October 2013: The Government of Austria has approved funding of US$2.2 million through the LifeWeb Initiative to help implement the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) through projects in Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia and the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

CBD Secretariat Recognizes Natural Capital Declaration as a Biodiversity Champion [viewed]

International Congress on Marine Protected Areas Calls for Law of Sea Negotiations on Conservation [viewed]

impac27 October 2013: Participants at the Third International Congress on Marine Protected Areas (IMPAC3) discussed strategies to meet the Convention on Biological Diversity's (CBD) Aichi Target 11 under the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, which calls for at least 10 per cent of all coastal and marine areas to be managed as conservation or protected areas by the year 2020.

Event: 2014 International Day for Biological Diversity: Island Biodiversity [viewed]

To coincide with the designation by the UN General Assembly of 2014 as the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the theme of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2014 will be 'Island Biodiversity'. A Special Event to celebrate the Day will be hosted by the Permanent Missions of Grenada, Samoa, Palau, Papua New Guinea and Mauritius, as well as the Global Island Partnership (GLISPA), at UN Headquarters (contact krishna1@un.org). Worldwide, more than 44 countries have registered events and activities in support of the Day.
