The brochure highlights partnerships with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

CBD Technical Report Assesses Achievement of Aichi Targets [viewed]

CBDSeptember 2014: The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Secretariat has released the Global Biodiversity Outlook 4 (GBO-4) Technical Report (CBD Technical Series No. 78), titled ‘Progress toward the Aichi Biodiversity Targets: An assessment of biodiversity trends, policy scenarios and key actions.' This report explains that, while progress has been made towards achieving most of the 20 Aichi Biodiversity Targets, significant work remains, and if current trends continue, the Targets are unlikely to be met by the 2020 deadline.

Event: Sustainable Ocean Initiative Capacity-Building Workshop for South America [viewed]

The Sustainable Ocean Initiative (SOI) Capacity-Building Workshop will focus on sharing and learning from regional experiences on integrated marine and coastal area management, with the aim of holistically achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets 6 and 11. Participants will also discuss scientific and technical tools to support the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, including the description of ecologically or biologically significant marine areas (EBSAs). The SOI is a global platform to enhance capacity and build partnerships to achieve the Aichi Biodiversity Targets related to marine and coastal biodiversity. The Secretariat of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Ministry of Environment of Peru and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) are convening the meeting. The Japan Biodiversity Fund and the French Marine Protected Areas Agency fund the SOI.

CBD Reviews Progress on Plant Conservation Strategy [viewed]

CBDSeptember 2014: The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Secretariat has released CBD Technical Series No. 81, titled ‘Plant Conservation Report 2014: A review of progress towards the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation 2011-2020.' The report was prepared to contribute to the mid-term review of the CBD's Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the associated Aichi Biodiversity Targets, as well as the fourth edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO 4).

Meetings of the CBD and its Protocols Open in Pyeongchang [viewed]

CBD29 September 2014: The seventh Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (Cartagena Protocol COP/MOP 7) has opened in Pyeongchang, the Republic of Korea. It will be followed by the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12), which will run from 6-17 October 2014, also in Pyeongchang, and the first Meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) (NP COP/MOP 1), which will be held during the second week of CBD COP 12, from 13-17 October 2014.

CBD Reports Identify 48 Western South Pacific, Wider Caribbean and Western Mid-Atlantic EBSAs [viewed]

Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)September 2014: The Secretariat of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released two reports on ‘Ecologically or Biological Significant Areas (EBSAs): Special places in the world's oceans,' which describe areas that meet EBSA criteria from the Western South Pacific and from the Wider Caribbean and Western Mid-Atlantic. The reports identify ocean areas “that are most crucial to the health functioning of the global marine ecosystem,” with the aim of identifying areas in which to focus and prioritize marine conservation and management.

CBD Secretariat Issues Notification on Disaster Risk Reduction [viewed]

CBD17 September 2014: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has issued a notification on incorporating disaster risk reduction (DRR) into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) in advance of the adoption of a post-2015 framework for DRR that will succeed the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015 (HFA). The document (SCBD/SAM/DC/DCo/VA/83873) highlights opportunities "to raise awareness of the importance of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets to achieving DRR objectives."

CBD Secretariat Circulates Provisional Programme and Briefing Notes for COP 12 High-Level Segment [viewed]

cop1415 September 2014: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has circulated the provisional programme and briefing notes for the High-Level Segment of the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the CBD, prepared by the Government of the Republic of Korea, in consultation with the CBD Secretariat. The CBD COP 12 High-Level Segment will be held from 15-16 October 2014, under the theme 'Biodiversity for Sustainable Development.'

Event: IPBES Side Event at CBD COP 12 [viewed]

The Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), with the support of the UN Environment Programme - World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) will hold a side event during the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12) to brief participants on the progress made to date in implementing the IPBES work programme, and on what can be expected in the coming months and years. Opportunity will be provided for participants to discuss further, how the work of IPBES can most effectively contribute to implementation of the CBD at all levels.

SIDS Conference Generates Partnerships to Conserve and Manage Pacific Ocean Resources [viewed]

Samoa Partnerships Commitment4 September 2014: The Third International Conference on Small Island developing States (SIDS) generated financial commitments of US$1.9 billion across nearly 300 partnerships, many of which focus on oceans and biodiversity. At parallel and side events held before and during the Conference, SIDS and their development partners showcased commitments to the sustainable development of oceans, and announced further commitments and goals.
