International Day of Forests Commemorated Worldwide [viewed]

International Day of Forests21 March 2014: In celebration of the second International Day of Forests, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted the important benefits of forests: habitat provision for 80 percent of all terrestrial biodiversity; support of an estimated 1.6 billion people; adaptation and mitigation to climate change; and the maintenance of a timber and wood industry that accounts for almost 1 percent of global gross domestic product (GDP).

Event: CBD Capacity-building Workshop on the Nagoya Protocol on ABS for Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia [viewed]

This workshop aims to promote awareness of the core provisions of the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS), and strengthen the capacity of participating countries to undertake the necessary steps to ratify/accede to the Protocol and prepare for its effective implementation, with a view to contributing to the achievement of Aichi Biodiversity Target 16 on the Protocol. It will include a one-day training session on the pilot phase of the ABS Clearing-House.

CMS Releases Second Draft of Strategic Plan 2015-2023 [viewed]

CMSMarch 2014: The Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) has released the second draft of the Strategic Plan for Migratory Species 2015-2023. Prepared by the CMS Parties' Inter-sessional Strategic Plan Working Group, it has now been released for comments, which are due by 30 June 2014.

Event: IPBES Third Full MEP and Bureau Meeting [viewed]

CBD3 March 2014: Meeting from 24-28 February 2014, in Pyeongchang, the Republic of Korea, the third Meeting of the Open-ended Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ICNP 3) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted a series of recommendations in preparation for the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties (COP/MOP 1) to the Protocol.

Pacific Invasives Partnership Highlights GEF Proposal, Learning Network at Annual Meeting [viewed]

SPREP24 February 2014: The Pacific Invasives Partnership held its annual meeting to coordinate planning and share expertise among regional and international agencies working to curb the growing negative impact of invasive species in the region. Key discussions at the meeting included a proposal endorsed by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) to secure funding from the 6th replenishment of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
