CBD Circulates Briefs on Biodiversity for Water, Cities and Slums [viewed]

CBDJune 2013: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has circulated two new briefs highlighting the importance of biodiversity for sustainable development and as a contribution to the discussions on the post-2015 development agenda. One focuses on water security, while the other addresses biodiversity for cities and slums.

Event: CBD Expert Workshop on Enhancing Biodiversity Data and Observing Systems in Support of the Implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 [viewed]

This workshop will discuss ways in which collection of, access to, and use of biodiversity data and observations could be enhanced to support evidence-based decision-making and planning with a view to achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and corresponding national targets. It is organized by the Secretariat of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in collaboration with the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON). Conclusions from the workshop are expected to be formally reported to the SBSTTA 17 meeting in the following week and will support the consideration of scientific and technical needs related to the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020.

Event: IPBES Pan-European Stakeholder Meeting [viewed]

Event: IPBES Africa Regional Consultation Meeting [viewed]

The purpose of this regional consultation is to bring together African member States and other stakeholders in the region to discuss the current status of the intersessional process, including the development of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) work programme, draft conceptual framework, stakeholder engagement strategy, strategic partnership document and other elements of the Platform, and to strengthen the capacity and raise awareness in the region in the context of the IPBES framework.

Workshop Addresses Integration of MEAs into NBSAPs [viewed]

MEAs into NBSAPs2 July 2013: A workshop on improving the capacity of Francophone African National Focal Points in identifying indicators and integrating the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) objectives into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) brought together National Focal Points for the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), CMS and CITES from eight Francophone African countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, Niger, Senegal and Togo), supported by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

CBD SBSTTA Documentation Available for Peer Review [viewed]

Event: CBD Regional Workshop for the Pacific on the Preparation of the Fifth National Report [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) with support from the Governments of Japan and Fiji and in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), this workshop aims to strengthen countries' capacities in assessing the status and trends of biodiversity, in reviewing implementation of national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) and in measuring progress towards the Aichi biodiversity targets.

Event: Fourth ASEAN Heritage Parks Conference [viewed]

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) will organize the Fourth ASEAN Heritage Parks (AHP) Conference in the Philippines, with support from the GIZ Biodiversity and Climate Change Project, and the Government of the Philippines' Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Tourism. The conference is for park managers in Southeast Asia to discuss how to achieve international biodiversity targets and identify opportunities for international cooperation. Thematic sessions will be organized on: effective management of protected areas; biodiversity and climate change; integrating biodiversity values; ecotourism, business and biodiversity; and indigenous and local communities in protected areas. AHP conferences take place every three years. The ACB serves as the secretariat of the AHP Programme, which aims to ensure that park managers, policy makers, conservationists, scientists and other stakeholders benefit from available best practices and lessons on the management of AHPs and other protected areas. The ASEAN Declaration on Heritage Parks was agreed and signed by the environment ministers of the 10 ASEAN Member States in December 2003 in Yangon, Myanmar. There are more than 32 ASEAN Heritage Parks in the region.
