Event: 23rd Session of the FAO Committee on Forestry (COFO 23) [viewed]

The 23rd session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) will bring together heads of forest services and other senior government officials to identify emerging policy and technical issues, seek solutions and to advise FAO and others on appropriate actions. COFO is the highest FAO forestry statutory body and meets every two years.

IPCC Plans Special Reports on a 1.5°C Limit, Land Use and Oceans During AR6 Cycle [viewed]

ipcc4313 April 2016: During the 43rd session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-43), the Panel considered its role in supporting the implementation of the Paris Agreement as the IPCC embarks on its sixth assessment cycle. In planning for the cycle, the IPCC decided to undertake three special reports (SRs), flag cities as an SR for the seventh assessment report (AR7) cycle, refine the IPCC 2006 Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventories through a methodology report and integrate regional aspects more thoroughly into AR6. It was also announced that Abdalah Mokssit (Morocco) will be the next IPCC Secretary.

Event: Open Ended Working Group on Connecting Smallholders to Markets [viewed]

Convened as a "one-off" open-ended working group (OEWG), this meeting will finalize the outcomes of the High-Level Forum (HLF) on Connecting Smallholders to Markets in June 2015, in order to present recommendations to the 43rd Session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS 43) for endorsement. The meeting follows a request by CFS 42 that the HLF outcomes, including the good practices and lessons presented in the background document and during the discussion, be further analyzed with a view to preparing a set of draft policy recommendations and practices. The meeting is expected to identify potential recommendations and practices aimed at overcoming barriers and maximizing opportunities for smallholders, as well as set out a process to finalize and agree on the final version of the document to be presented to the CFS 43 in October 2016.

IPPC Governing Body Discusses Management of Plant Pests and Risks Related to Sea Shipping Containers [viewed]

ippc8 April 2016: The eleventh annual meeting of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM 11), the Governing Body of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), discussed, among other issues, phytosanitary standards for the management and treatment of plant pests and pathogens as well as risks relating to plant pest introduction through sea shipping containers. Held under the theme 'Plant Health for Food Security,' CPM 11 highlighted the role of plant pest management and phytosanitary measures for achieving the Sustainable Development Goal to "end hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture" (SDG 2).

First PrepCom on BBNJ Makes Progress on Instrument under UNCLOS [viewed]

BBNJ11 April 2016: The first session of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom 1) on the elements of a draft text of an international legally binding instrument under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) agreed on a number of procedural and substantial issues. The meeting marked the beginning of discussions on a formal process that is expected to lead to the adoption of a new UNCLOS implementing agreement on deep-sea biodiversity.

Event: 43rd Session of the Committee on World Food Security [viewed]

The 43rd Session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) is expected to address a series of items arising from its Multi-year Programme of Work, including: nutrition; engagement with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); connecting smallholder farmers to markets; urbanization, rural transformation and implications for food security and nutrition; and monitoring. A thematic event is expected to share experiences and take stock of the use and application of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security.

UNFCCC Reports on Technical Assessment Process for Forest Reference Levels [viewed]

UNFCCC23 March 2016: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a synthesis report, titled 'Technical assessment process for proposed forest reference emission levels and/or forest reference levels submitted by developing country Parties' (FCCC/SBSTA/2016/INF.2), which outlines challenges faced by the Secretariat in organizing and coordinating the annual technical assessment sessions, as well as steps taken to overcome them.

IPBES Approves Assessments on Pollinators, Scenarios and Modelling [viewed]

ipbes428 February 2016: The Fourth Plenary session of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-4) approved summaries for policy makers (SPMs) of the Platform's first assessments on Pollination, Pollinators and Food Production, and on Scenarios and Models for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. Delegates also launched several new assessments and elected Robert Watson (UK) as the Platform's new Chair.

UNEP OECPR-2 Addresses Implementation, Environmental Dimensions of Agenda 2030 [viewed]
