MOP7 Marks Global Opening of UNECE Water Convention, Adopts Reporting Mechanism [viewed]

United Nations19 November 2015: The seventh Meeting of the Parties (MOP7) to the 1992 Helsinki Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes marked the global opening of the Convention to countries beyond the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) region, adopted a reporting mechanism, and endorsed a policy guidance note on assessing the benefits of transboundary cooperation on water issues.

Policy Update #13: Combating Desertification through Multilateral Action [viewed]

CBD SBSTTA 19 and Article 8(j) Working Group Progress Biodiversity Mainstreaming, Guidelines on PIC and TK Benefit-Sharing [viewed]

Co-Chair Jae Choe (Republic of Korea), on behalf of the COP 12 Presidency, gaveled the meeting to a close at 1:18 pm.9 November 2015: Allowing for more input from representatives of indigenous peoples and local communities, the 19th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) made progress on agenda items related to biodiversity mainstreaming, while the concurrent meeting of the CBD Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions developed guidelines on prior informed consent (PIC) and fair and equitable benefit-sharing from the use of traditional knowledge (TK).

CBD SBSTTA 19 and 9th Meeting of Working Group on Article 8(j) to Address Series of Scientific and Traditional Knowledge-Related Issues [viewed]

CBD2 November 2015: The nineteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) opened on 2 November in Montreal, Canada, and will continue until 5 November 2015, to address, among other items, strategic, scientific and technical issues related to the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. Organized concurrently, the ninth meeting of the CBD Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions will convene from 4-7 November 2015 to address issues related to the implementation of CBD Article 8(j) on traditional knowledge.

CITES PC22 Considers Species Listings in Advance of CoP17 [viewed]

cites_p2223 October 2105: The twenty-second meeting of the Plants Committee (PC22) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has recommended, inter alia: PC commitment to continue working with Madagascar on the implementation of the Action Plan for Malagasy ebonies and Malagasy rosewoods, noting however strong concern that no information has as yet been provided on the status of implementation of elements of the Action Plan; and the adoption of a Review of Significant Trade (RST) process that provides for greater transparency.

GEF Council Reappoints CEO Naoko Ishii for Second Term [viewed]

The work program comprises 17 project concepts and two programmatic approaches, focusing mainly on climate change and sustainable ecosystem management in the Amazon. In addition, GEF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairperson Naoko Ishii was appointed for a second four-year term.

FOREST EUROPE Ministerial Conferences Conclude [viewed]

forest-europe-madrid21 October 2015: FOREST EUROPE held two Ministerial meetings in Madrid, Spain. The seventh Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe, held from 20-21 October 2015, adopted a Ministerial Declaration on '25 Years Together Promoting Sustainable Forest Management in Europe,' a decision on the future direction of FOREST EUROPE, and resolutions on the forest sector in the center of a green economy and protection of forests in a changing environment. The Extraordinary Ministerial Conference, which convened on 21 October, received the results of the work of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for a Legally Binding Agreement on Forests in Europe (INC-Forests) and agreed to explore ways to find common ground on the draft no later than 2020.

UNCCD COP 12 Discusses SDG Target on Land Degradation Neutrality, DLDD Links with Climate Change [viewed]

cop12unccd23 October 2015: The 12th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 12) adopted 35 decisions following deliberations on agenda items related to desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD), including how to pursue the Sustainable Development Goals' (SDG) target to achieve land degradation neutrality (LDN) and how to align the UNCCD's goals and Parties' action programmes with the Goals. Parties also considered messages for the Paris Climate Change Conference, which will take place from 30 November-11 December 2015.
