CSOs Release Publications on Post-2015 Indicators, Priorities [viewed]

March 2015: Civil society organizations have published various inputs to and analyses of the post-2015 development agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the Financing for Development (FfD) processes. Stakeholder groups and other experts elaborated their views on: SDG indicators; estimating the costs of the SDGs; human rights in the agenda; the responsibilities of developed countries; gender equality; land rights; and cross-sectoral partnerships for sustainable development.

Event: Informal Consultation on the Elaboration of the UNFF11 Ministerial Declaration on the IAF [viewed]

Following the second meeting of the Open Ended Ad hoc Expert Group (AHEG2) that considered recommendations and elements of a Ministerial Declaration on the future of the International Arrangement on Forests (IAF), the bureau of the eleventh meeting of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF11) is convening an informal consultation to engage Member States ahead of UNFF11. The meeting will consider, in particular, the recommendations of the co-chairs with regard to the means of implementation, the forest instrument, the Secretariat, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), regional coordination, major groups, and the post-2015 development process.

Governments Advance Revision of Mediterranean Sustainable Development Strategy [viewed]

unep-map18 February 2015: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the France-based NGO Plan Bleu supported a regional conference in Malta, in which stakeholders and Parties to the Barcelona Convention reviewed a revised sustainable development strategy for the Mediterranean region. Participants considered six thematic areas of the revised Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD): seas and coasts; natural resources; rural development and food; climate; sustainable cities; transition towards a green economy; and governance.

Member States Seek to "Break with the Past" in Post-2015 Declaration [viewed]

photo_post2015_in220 February 2015: The second session of the intergovernmental negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda focused on the declaration component of the outcome that will be adopted at the Summit of Heads of State and Government on the post-2015 development agenda in September 2015. A summary of the discussion will be produced by the Secretariat, for reference, while the “discussion document” circulated and discussed during the meeting remains “a document without status” but will assist in creating the zero draft of the Summit outcome, according to the Co-Facilitators.

Event: ITPGR Governing Body 6 [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR), the sixth session of the Governing Body (GB) will be preceded by two days of regional consultations. The session will address a series of items related to the operations of the Treaty's Multilateral System of Access and Benefit-sharing, as well as farmers' rights and sustainable use of plant genetic resources.

Event: 38th Session of IFAD's Governing Council [viewed]

The 38th session of the Governing Council for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) will focus on the theme 'Rural Transformation: Key to Sustainable Development'. The session will discuss topics including indigenous peoples and sustainable food systems, overcoming challenges to rural transformation through the post-2015 sustainable development goals, innovations in financial inclusion, and empowering women to transform rural areas. It will also include a briefing by Turkey on the G20 Presidency. The session will feature high-level officials as keynote speakers such as John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana, His Majesty Tupou VI, King of Tonga, and Pier Carlo Padoan, Minister of Economy and Finance, Italy.

Policy Update #10: The Quest for Harmonized Implementation: Anticipating a Broader Role for Basin Organizations in the Post-2015 Era [viewed]

The advent of 17 draft sustainable development goals (SDGs) and 169 targets, in mid-2014, has promoted interest in the “harmonized” implementation of goals, and raises many practical questions. Is it inevitable that some goals and targets will be favored over others? How can governments and other development actors respond to this detailed agenda in an even-handed manner, without collapsing under the weight of competing aims? Which actors are capable of taking them on? Discussions of the water-energy-food nexus, in recent years, have raised similar kinds of concerns. There are some examples of on-the-ground approaches that respond to sustainability concerns across the nexus, but the governance of power generation, agriculture and water management sectors, more often than not, remains fragmented.
