UNCCD CRIC 13 Addresses Sustainable Land Management Linkages in Post-2015, Climate Agendas [viewed]

cric_1327 March 2015: Delegates to the 13th session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 13) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) made a critical assessment of the status of the Convention and exchanged views on how to ensure its continued relevance and effectiveness. Pointing to the continuing “implementation gap” despite the high number of submitted country reports, several delegates questioned whether “we are collecting the right information to spur further action,” and suggested that a focus on synergies with the other Rio Conventions and adopting a global target on land degradation neutrality (LDN) could enhance the Convention's impact.

UNCCD Secretariat Evaluates the Effectiveness of NAPs in Advance of CRIC 13 [viewed]

UNCCD logo24 March 2015: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has published an evaluation report on the effectiveness of national action programmes (NAPs) as tools for policy change, based on the premise that “a virtuous circle” exists between the dual roles of NAPs as both a practical framework for action and a driver of political action. The evaluation stresses that this circle has in fact broken down, and explores the political dimension of obstacles to national-level implementation of action on desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD).

UNCCD Secretariat Publishes Independent Evaluation of Integrated Investment Frameworks [viewed]

UNCCD logo24 March 2015: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has published an 'Independent evaluation of the effectiveness of the Integrated Investment Frameworks,' which aims to assess the effectiveness of IIFs in supporting resource mobilization for sustainable land management (SLM). Cambodia, Ethiopia, Honduras and Senegal were chosen as case studies for the evaluation.

High-level Ministerial Roundtable to Address Climate Change at UNCCD COP 12 [viewed]

turkish_delegation_csts410 March 2015: At a side event during the fourth special session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST S-4) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), Monique Barbut, UNCCD Executive Secretary, underlined the importance of the high-level segment of the twelfth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12). The high-level segment, which will take place from 20-21 October 2015, will include a series of ministerial roundtables on topics including climate change, and is expected to result in a message that will be sent from UNCCD COP 12 to the UNFCCC COP 21, which will convene a little over one month later in Paris, France.

CSOs Release Publications on Post-2015 Indicators, Priorities [viewed]

March 2015: Civil society organizations have published various inputs to and analyses of the post-2015 development agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the Financing for Development (FfD) processes. Stakeholder groups and other experts elaborated their views on: SDG indicators; estimating the costs of the SDGs; human rights in the agenda; the responsibilities of developed countries; gender equality; land rights; and cross-sectoral partnerships for sustainable development.

Event: Informal Consultation on the Elaboration of the UNFF11 Ministerial Declaration on the IAF [viewed]

Following the second meeting of the Open Ended Ad hoc Expert Group (AHEG2) that considered recommendations and elements of a Ministerial Declaration on the future of the International Arrangement on Forests (IAF), the bureau of the eleventh meeting of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF11) is convening an informal consultation to engage Member States ahead of UNFF11. The meeting will consider, in particular, the recommendations of the co-chairs with regard to the means of implementation, the forest instrument, the Secretariat, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), regional coordination, major groups, and the post-2015 development process.

Governments Advance Revision of Mediterranean Sustainable Development Strategy [viewed]

unep-map18 February 2015: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the France-based NGO Plan Bleu supported a regional conference in Malta, in which stakeholders and Parties to the Barcelona Convention reviewed a revised sustainable development strategy for the Mediterranean region. Participants considered six thematic areas of the revised Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD): seas and coasts; natural resources; rural development and food; climate; sustainable cities; transition towards a green economy; and governance.
