GEF Council Reappoints CEO Naoko Ishii for Second Term [viewed]

naoko_ishii23 October 2015: The 49th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council approved a work program amounting to US$254.99 million. The work program comprises 17 project concepts and two programmatic approaches, focusing mainly on climate change and sustainable ecosystem management in the Amazon. In addition, GEF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairperson Naoko Ishii was appointed for a second four-year term.

FOREST EUROPE Ministerial Conferences Conclude [viewed]

forest-europe-madrid21 October 2015: FOREST EUROPE held two Ministerial meetings in Madrid, Spain. The seventh Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe, held from 20-21 October 2015, adopted a Ministerial Declaration on '25 Years Together Promoting Sustainable Forest Management in Europe,' a decision on the future direction of FOREST EUROPE, and resolutions on the forest sector in the center of a green economy and protection of forests in a changing environment. The Extraordinary Ministerial Conference, which convened on 21 October, received the results of the work of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for a Legally Binding Agreement on Forests in Europe (INC-Forests) and agreed to explore ways to find common ground on the draft no later than 2020.

UNCCD COP 12 Discusses SDG Target on Land Degradation Neutrality, DLDD Links with Climate Change [viewed]

cop12unccd23 October 2015: The 12th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 12) adopted 35 decisions following deliberations on agenda items related to desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD), including how to pursue the Sustainable Development Goals' (SDG) target to achieve land degradation neutrality (LDN) and how to align the UNCCD's goals and Parties' action programmes with the Goals. Parties also considered messages for the Paris Climate Change Conference, which will take place from 30 November-11 December 2015.

Francophone Countries Discuss Linkages Among Land, Climate and SDGs [viewed]

francophone_unccd19 October 2015: The Institut de la Francophonie pour le Développement Durable (IFDD), a subsidiary body of the International Organization of the Francophonie (IOF), under the chairmanship of Senegal and in cooperation with the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Secretariat, organized a discussion on the topic of how to use the fight against climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as leverage for soil preservation. The event took place on the sidelines of the 12th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the UNCCD.

Event: 42nd Session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS 42) [viewed]

Organized under the theme ‘Making a Difference in Food Security and Nutrition,' the 42nd session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS 42) will address agenda items, related to: CFS and the sustainable development challenge; policy convergence, including a policy round table on water for food security and nutrition, and the framework for action for food security and nutrition in protracted crises; coordination and linkages between CFS and other food security and nutrition stakeholders at the global, regional and national levels; ongoing workstreams, including the Global Strategic Framework for Food Security and Nutrition, the outcomes of the High-Level Forum on Connecting Smallholders to Markets, the report on the findings of the CFS effectiveness survey, and the multi-year programme of work and priorities for 2016-2017; the role of CFS in advancing nutrition; and organizational issues. Special events will be held on youth for food security and nutrition and resilience building for sustainable food security and nutrition. The session marks the culmination of some areas of work, including the anticipated endorsement of the Framework for Action for Food Security and Nutrition in Protracted Crises, but also launches the beginning of new areas of work like the role CFS will play in nutrition and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

UNEP: TPP Provisions to Help Prevent Illegal Trade in Wildlife [viewed]

UNEP6 October 2015: The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal includes provisions on combating illegal trade in wildlife under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The provisions also require the 12 countries involved to take action to protect any wildlife that has been illegally taken from any country, a step that is expected to help address illegal trade in wildlife and overfishing.

UNCCD COP 12 Draft Consultation Texts Released [viewed]

unccd_cop12October 2015: The Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has made available the draft negotiation texts for the upcoming twelfth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the UNCCD. The documents include related texts to be considered by the two UNCCD subsidiary bodies, the 14th meeting of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 14) and the 12th meeting of the UNCCD's Committee on Science and Technology (CST 12).
