CBD COP 12 Adopts IAS Guidance [viewed]

CBD10 October 2014: Delegates at the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12) adopted international guidance on the introduction of invasive alien species (IAS) as pets, aquarium and terrarium species and as live bait and live food. The guidelines will support the achievement of Aichi Biodiversity Target 9, which aims to identify, control, eradicate and prevent IAS and put in place measures to manage IAS pathways.

Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico Collaborating On Mesoamerican Reef Project [viewed]

GEFOctober 2014: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has provided an update on its ‘Integrated Transboundary Ridges-to-Reef Management of the Mesoamerican Reef (MAR2R)' project, which is using a holistic approach to address threats to the Mesoamerican reef. The regional, cross-border project promotes reef conservation in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.

CBD Reviews Progress on Plant Conservation Strategy [viewed]

CBDSeptember 2014: The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Secretariat has released CBD Technical Series No. 81, titled ‘Plant Conservation Report 2014: A review of progress towards the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation 2011-2020.' The report was prepared to contribute to the mid-term review of the CBD's Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the associated Aichi Biodiversity Targets, as well as the fourth edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO 4).

Event: 7th International Conference on Ballast Water Management (ICBWM2014) [viewed]

The Seventh International Conference on Ballast Water Management will address the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (2004). The Convention has been ratified by 40 countries and is expected to come into force within the next two years. The Convention aims to decrease the rate of bio-invasions that result from shipping. The conference offers an opportunity for sharing experiences and solutions on the implementation of the Convention. It will also include a field trip to Singapore's Ballast Water Centre Facility and other sites. The Global Environment Facility (GEF), UN Development Programme (UNDP), GloBallast Partnerships Programme and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) are organizing the meeting.

EU Adopts Invasive Alien Species Regulation [viewed]

European Union 29 September 2014: The European Union (EU) adopted legislation to address invasive alien species (IAS), in line with its EU 2020 biodiversity targets and its commitments under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The Regulation enables the EU to develop and implement a system to prevent the introduction and spread of IAS, with a focus on the species that cause the most damage.

IPPC Joins Liaison Group of Biodiversity-Related Conventions [viewed]

IPPC12 September 2014: The Secretariat of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) has joined the Liaison Group of the Biodiversity-related Conventions, which includes the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES), the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR), the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, and the World Heritage Convention (WHC).

WECAFC Report Outlines Recommendations and Resolutions on Fisheries Management [viewed]
