IAEG-SDGs Calls for Input on "Grey" Indicators [viewed]

iaeg-sdg9 December 2015: The Inter-agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goal Indicators (IAEG-SDGs) is holding a consultation on the approximately 70 proposed indicators coded as "grey," where the Group does not yet have consensus. The online consultation, open from 9-15 December 2015, seeks input from non-IAEG Member States, representatives of regional commissions and international and regional agencies, and stakeholders from academia, civil society and the private sector.

Ballast Water Management Convention Nears Entry into Force [viewed]

IMONovember 2015: Ghana, Indonesia and Morocco have ratified the Ballast Water Management Convention, according to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), bringing the total number of ratifications to 47 States. The Convention aims to prevent the spread of invasive aquatic species through ships' ballast water by requiring ships to have procedures and standards in place to manage and control ballast water.

Paris Climate Change Conference Opens with Financial Pledges at Leaders Event [viewed]

iisdrs_cop2130 November 2015: Heads of State and Government attending the Leaders Event on the first day of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP 21) addressed, inter alia: the inclusion of gender for ensuring climate justice; the importance of differentiation; the legal form of the agreement; the periodicity of the review process; transparency and accountability rules; whether or not to anchor loss and damage in a permanent mechanism; the role of natural capital accounting; the link between climate change and development; balancing mitigation and adaptation finance; technology transfer in providing mitigation support; and the need to address the degradation of forests, desertification, and biodiversity loss.

CBD AHTEG Report Proposes Operational Definition of Synthetic Biology [viewed]

CBD10 November 2015: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released the report of the Ad hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Synthetic Biology. The report considers, among other issues, potential benefits and adverse impacts of organisms that are products of synthetic biology for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use. The report contains a proposed operational definition of synthetic biology, an illustrative list of potential benefits and adverse impacts, and other AHTEG recommendations to the CBD Conference of the Parties (COP).

EC Publishes Mid-Term Review of Biodiversity Strategy [viewed]

EU flag2 October 2015: The European Commission (EC) published the mid-term review of the EU Biodiversity Strategy, showing progress in many areas but highlighting the need for greater effort by States on implementation to achieve the primary objective of halting biodiversity loss by 2020. The review report was submitted to the European Parliament and Council on 2 October 2015.

SPREP Tackles Invasive Species in the Pacific [viewed]

SPREPSeptember 2015: Throughout August, countries in the Pacific region, with support from the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Progamme (SPREP), have been taking preventative and corrective action to stop the spread of invasive alien species (IAS). By the end of 2015, SPREP expects to exceed its Strategic Plan 2010-2015 goal of creating five National Invasive Species Strategy and Action Plans (NISSAPs) for Pacific island countries and territories by 100%.

Event: IPBES E-conference on Scoping Assessments for Invasive Alien Species and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity [viewed]

This e-conference will take place in three sessions. Co-Chairs from the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) will moderate the discussions where participants will review and further develop the initial scoping for (a) the thematic assessment on invasive alien species and their control and (b) the thematic assessment on the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity and strengthening capacities and tools.
