Event: CMS Workshop to Develop an International Action Plan on the Conservation of Argali and Their Habitat [viewed]

The Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) Secretariat has invited argali range States to nominate relevant technical experts for the working group in order to contribute to the further strengthening and formalization of transboundary conservation of argali. An international consultant will develop a first draft action plan based on the work of participants at the Vilm workshop in March 2012. At the workshop in Bishkek, which will be financed by the GIZ Regional Program on Sustainable Use of Natural Resources in Central Asia, participants will review this document and discuss priority activities for implementation.

EEA Releases Overview of European Protected Areas [viewed]

EEA22 October 2012: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released a report titled “Protected Areas in Europe – an Overview,” reviewing the status of national parks, nature reserves, biosphere reserves and other protected areas in Europe. According to the report, there are over 105,000 nationally designated protected sites in EEA member and cooperating countries.

Ramsar Reports on Wetland Management Project in Turkey [viewed]

23 October 2012: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention) has reported on the implementation of the Small Grant Fund Project titled “Effective Management of Ramsar Sites in Turkey.” The project, which was conducted by Doğa Derneği (Birdlife Turkey), consisted of stakeholder consultations to assess existing wetland management structures in the country, and led to the establishment of a technical commission.

UNWTO Convenes Pan-African Conference on Sustainable Development [viewed]

Attended by tourism ministers, representatives of the private sector, and conservation officials, the Conference adopted the Arusha Declaration.

CBD COP 11 Adopts Interim Target and Roadmap for Resource Mobilization [viewed]

COP 11 President Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of Environment and Forests, India, gavelled the meeting to a close at 3:02 am.22 October 2012: Held from 8-19 October 2012, in Hyderabad, India, the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted 33 decisions on a range of strategic, substantive, administrative, financial and budgetary issues. Delegates agreed to set an interim target of doubling biodiversity-related international financial resource flows to developing countries by 2015, and at least maintaining this level until 2020. This is coupled with targets on improving baseline information, as well as a preliminary reporting framework for monitoring resource mobilization.
