Event: 41st meeting of the CMS Standing Committee [viewed]

The 41st meeting of the CMS Standing Committee is scheduled to convene in November 2013. The Standing Committee of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) was established by Resolution 1.1 of the Conference of the Parties (COP). Its functions are to provide policy and administrative guidance between regular meetings of the COP. It consists of representatives of every global region, of the Depositary and, where applicable, of the country that plans to host the next meeting of the COP.

Mali Designates Three Ramsar Sites [viewed]

20 March 2013: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) has reported that the Government of Mali has designated three Ramsar Sites, bringing the total number of sites for this country to four, covering over four million hectares.

Event: Ninth Meeting of the AEWA Standing Committee [viewed]

The Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) is an intergovernmental treaty dedicated to the conservation of migratory waterbirds and their habitats across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, Greenland and the Canadian Archipelago. The ninth meeting of the Standing Committee for AEWA will take place from 18-20 September in Trondheim, Norway, and will be hosted by the Norwegian Directorate for Nature Management. AEWA was developed under the framework of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), which is administered by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

IUCN and ICSU Solicit Views on Stakeholder Engagement in IPBES [viewed]

UAE Designates Mangrove and Protected Area as Third Ramsar Site [viewed]

15 March 2013: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) has reported that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has designated the Mangrove and Alhafeya Protected Area in Khor Kalba, located in the emirate of Sharjah, as its third Wetland of International Importance.

Ramsar, Arctic Council Conservation Programme Discuss Cooperation [viewed]

Ramsar14 March 2013: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) has reported on the recent meeting of the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) programme of the Arctic Council. CAFF's main activity is the Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program (CBMP) focusing on terrestrial, freshwater and marine biodiversity.

Event: IPBES-2 [viewed]

The second meeting of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) will address, inter alia: the initial work programme of the Platform; financial and budgetary arrangements for the Platform; and rules and procedures for the operations of the Platform, including for the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel. The meeting is scheduled for 9-14 December 2013, in Antalya, Turkey.

We can define a campaign as “an organized course of action to achieve a goal.” And this is exactly what we do at the Ramsar Convention in our annual wetland campaign. First launched in 1997, the Convention's World Wetlands Day (WWD) campaign takes place on and around the 2nd of February each year – a date that celebrates the launch back in 1971 of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands as an intergovernmental treaty for the conservation and wise use of wetlands. The goal of this annual campaign is raising awareness of the importance of wetlands so that all people act for their wise use and conservation, challenging indeed.

Event: Leadership Summit for the Caribbean Challenge Initiative (CCI) [viewed]

This Summit aims to bring together Heads of Governments, Ministers of the Environment, Chief Executive Officers of major corporations and donor agencies to set a new course for the management and preservation of the region's marine and coastal environment. Co-hosted by the Prime Minister of Grenada and the Premier of the British Virgin Islands, the event is supported by Richard Branson of the Virgin Group, and The Nature Conservancy. The Caribbean Challenge Initiative (CCI) was launched in 2008 to provide greater leadership for protecting and sustainably managing the marine and coastal environment across the Caribbean.
