CMS Calls for Proposals for SGP’s 2012-2013 Funding Cycle

16 March 2012: The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) has announced a new call for proposals as part of the CMS Small Grants Programme (SGP), for the period 2012-2013.

The CMS SGP, which was established in 1994 by the fourth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 4), aims to strengthen the implementation of the Convention and trigger concerted action. According to CMS, it has played a critical role in the conservation of migratory species in over 30 countries.

The deadline for applications, which have to be endorsed by the CMS Focal Points in the countries where activities are planned, is 31 May 2012. With funding from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), at least €75,000 will be available for the 2012 funding round. Individual projects under the Programme can receive up to €15,000, but applications for smaller amounts are encouraged.

Governmental institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), communities, conservationists and researchers engaged in the conservation of migratory species are eligible for the grant, provided that activities are carried out in countries that have ratified the Convention and are not more than three years in arrears with their contributions. If CMS Parties that are currently more than three years in arrears transfer the outstanding funds by 31 May 2012, they will become eligible.

Projects will be evaluated and approved by the CMS Scientific Council, with assistance from the UNEP/CMS Secretariat according to the SGP guidelines available on the CMS website. Least Developed Countries (LDCs) that meet application criteria are particularly encouraged to apply.  Projects with co-funding will be prioritized, as well as those requiring urgent conservation action. Priority is given to species on Appendix I and listed for Concerted Action, other species on Appendix I, species on Appendix II and in exceptional circumstances other migratory species. [CMS Press Release]
