ITPGR Report on Enhancing Implementation in Asia Released

ITPGR7 March 2014: The Secretariat of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) has released the report of the first Asian meeting of the national focal points of the Treaty. The report, inter alia, outlines areas for cooperation among Asian countries to enhance ITPGR implementation.

The meeting discussed possible measures to enhance implementation of the Treaty at the national level, such as human resources and infrastructure, policy and legal infrastructure, and specialized knowledge about the main Treaty's systems.

Participants exchanged national experiences, lessons learned and challenges in implementation and recommended, inter alia: consultations with farmers' organizations to familiarize farmers with the Treaty; and consultations between agricultural and environmental departments to ensure harmony between the Treaty and the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

On regional cooperation, participants recommended: organizing regional "Training of Trainers" workshops and a specific workshop on the Nagoya Protocol; developing a portal for national information on procedures for access to plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA); and strengthening regional networking among Asian countries.

The first meeting of Asian national focal points was held 27-28 May 2013. [Workshop Report] [ITPGR Press Release]
