UNCCD and IAEA Sign “Practical Arrangement”
18 April 2013: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have signed an agreement to collaborate on¬†nuclear technologies to strengthen the assessment of soil erosion and monitor improvements over time.
The agreement, titled the "Practical Arrangement,"¬†was signed by UNCCD Executive Secretary Luc Gnacadja¬†and Ana Claudia Raffo-Caiado, Director of the IAEA's Division of Technical Cooperation Programme Support and Coordination (TCPC). It was signed on the sidelines of the¬†eleventh session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 11).
The Practical Arrangement will¬†run until 31 December 2017. It seeks to¬†promote the¬†enhanced conservation of land and soil resources for poverty reduction and environmental sustainability, and to¬†support the health and productivity of drylands. The two organizations are expected to exchange and disseminate¬†information, and participate in relevant scientific networks and activities as well as¬†joint educational and training courses.
