UNGA Second Committee Approves Resolution on International Year of Water Cooperation

28 November 2012: The Second Committee (Economic and Financial) of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) has approved a draft resolution on “Implementation of the International Year of Water Cooperation, 2013” (A/C.2/67/L.38/Rev.1).

The approved text would have the Assembly: emphasize water's importance for sustainable development, the eradication of poverty and hunger, human health and well-being and achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); acknowledge the importance of cooperation for the achievement of water and sanitation goals; welcome the offer of the Government of Tajikistan to host, in August 2013, in Dushanbe, a high-level international conference on water cooperation, and encourage preparations for the conference, including a background paper from the UN Secretary-General; invite the UNGA President to convene a high-level interactive dialogue during the Assembly's 67th session on 22 March 2013, World Water Day, to mark the 2013 International Year of Water Cooperation and the 20th anniversary of the proclamation of World Water Day; and welcome the convening of the official World Water Day event in The Hague, which will be dedicated to water cooperation, the theme of the International Year.
