Event: ELD Strategy Workshop: Developing a Roadmap for Future Action [viewed]

Following the conclusion of the first two phases of the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative, this workshop aims to bring together various ELD partners and stakeholders to critically reflect on achievements, challenges and lessons learned so far. The meeting will develop a roadmap towards the next implementation phase of the Initiative, which will seek to further enhance the integration of economic cost-benefit analyses of land degradation within national and international policy strategies and decision making, and increase the capacity of technical experts and policy makers to use ELD data and methodologies. The meeting also aims to identify new research projects to supplement the international debate on the economic benefits of land and land-based ecosystems.

CBD SBI Adopts Recommendations on Actions to Enhance Implementation [viewed]

CBD8 May 2016: The first meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI) adopted 13 recommendations related to: review of progress in implementation; strategic actions to enhance implementation; strengthening support for implementation; and improving the efficiency of the structures and processes of the CBD and its protocols.

Climate Action 2016 Event Builds Momentum to Implement Paris Agreement [viewed]

climate_action20166 May 2016: Two weeks after the Paris Agreement on climate change was opened for signature, an estimated 700 representatives from intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, national governments and the private sector gathered in Washington, DC, for “Climate Action 2016,” to continue building momentum and partnerships for global action to address climate change. The two-day event involved keynote speeches and round table discussions in which participants discussed the challenges and opportunities to turn the “intended” nationally determined contributions (INDCs) developed under the context of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) into “implemented” NDCs.

Conference Calls on Governments to "Act Now" on SDGs, Paris Agreement [viewed]

sdgs_germany5 May 2016: A conference on 'Jump-starting the SDGs in Germany: Natural Resources and Sustainable Consumption and Production' addressed the challenges and opportunities of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Germany and worldwide. It focused on natural resources and sustainable consumption and production (SCP) patterns, taking into consideration Germany's role as a major consumer of natural resources in a globalized world. Participants also focused on the potential role of partnerships in supporting effective implementation of the SDGs.

CFS Consultation Focuses on Connecting Smallholder Farmers to Markets [viewed]

CITES Parties Submit Proposals and Amendments in Advance of CoP17 [viewed]

Event: First Consultation on Compilation of Submissions on Indigenous Peoples' Participation in UN Processes [viewed]

UN General Assembly (UNGA) resolution 70/486, 'Rights of Indigenous Peoples,' adopted on 1 December 2015, requests the Assembly President to conduct consultations with Member States, indigenous peoples' representatives and UN mechanisms on measures to enable the participation of indigenous peoples' representatives and institutions in UN processes on issues affecting them. An online consultation took place in March and April 2016. The first of two consultations to discuss the compilation of views submitted to the online consultation will take place on the sidelines of the 15th session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII). Views expressed at this consultation will be included in a revised draft compilation to be issued on 16 May, ahead of a second consultation on 18 May.

Event: GACSA Annual Forum: Climate-Smart Agriculture in Action [viewed]

The Annual Forum of the Global Alliance for Climate-Smart Agriculture (GACSA), which is meeting under the theme 'CSA in Action,' will provide the opportunity for participants to share solutions, discuss challenges and build partnerships on CSA. The event will include sessions on: GACSA country case studies (Costa Rica, France, Ireland, Malawi, Tanzania and Viet Nam); climate finance and investment; CSA knowledge in action; regional CSA alliances; and future opportunities for scaling up CSA. The GACSA Action Groups on knowledge, enabling environment and investment will also meet, as will the GACSA Strategic Committee. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit the agricultural cooperative 'La Sonnina'. GACSA was launched in 2014 at the UN Climate Summit, and is a voluntary alliance of partners addressing the challenges facing food security and agriculture under a changing climate. The GACSA Facilitation Unit is hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO).

Event: Ocean Economy and Trade: Sustainable Fisheries, Transport and Tourism [viewed]

The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Commonwealth Secretariat and the International Ocean Institute are hosting this seminar to discuss how international trade in goods and services can support the advancement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 (To conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development) and other related goals. The seminar also aims to enhance understanding of the oceans economy concept and its links to trade. The meeting will underscore the interdependencies of ocean-based sectors like fisheries, coastal tourism and maritime transport. Participants will also discuss: global oceans challenges and policy responses, including climate change and the implications of sea level rise; ocean biodiversity, large marine ecosystems (LMEs) and marine genetic resources (MGR); illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing; and the role of fisheries in graduating from Least Developed Country (LDC) status.
