Ocean Cleanup Testing Equipment to Remove Plastic Waste from Oceans [viewed]

23 June 2016: The Government of the Netherlands has awarded €500,000 to Ocean Cleanup to support the test of a prototype of equipment designed to remove plastic debris from the oceans. The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) has highlighted this project as part of efforts to address plastic waste in the world's oceans.

Event: 16th Session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues [viewed]

The 16th session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII) will take place in 2017, which is the ten-year anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). The PFII is an advisory body to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), established in 2000. It has the mandate to discuss indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights, and focuses on specific themes when it convenes for ten days every year. The 16th session will follow up on the recommendations of previous PFII sessions with regard to indigenous youth, and the empowerment of indigenous women, and will discuss measures taken to implement UNDRIP. PFII 15, in 2016, focused on the theme, 'Indigenous peoples: conflict, peace and resolution'.

Event: African Economic Conference 2016 [viewed]

Jointly organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the African Economic Conference (AEC) 2016 will convene under the theme, 'Feeding Africa: Towards Agro-Allied Industrialization for Inclusive Growth'. Participants will consider the latest empirical evidence on Africa's agricultural transformation and discuss how to leverage agro-industrialization for food security and inclusive growth in Africa. The conference aims to provide a platform for critical thinking on how policy-makers, development partners, the private sector, civil society organizations and the academia should support the planning and implementation of these industrialization strategies.

WAVES Publishes Briefs Explaining NCA and Convenes Workshop in Africa [viewed]

wavesJune 2016: The Wealth Accounting and the Valuation of Ecosystem Services (WAVES) Partnership has released a series of briefs explaining natural capital accounting (NCA) for forest, land and water resources. The briefs review how the accounts are produced, summarize their potential benefits and provide examples from WAVES Partnership countries. In addition, the Partnership recently supported a workshop to help African countries that are parties to the Gaborone Declaration to establish NCA priorities and accounts.

Event: Meeting of the CBD Informal Advisory Committee on Communication, Education and Public Awareness [viewed]

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will convene a meeting of the Informal Advisory Committee on Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA-IAC). The meeting will include a workshop, with the participation of additional external experts, to explore messaging approaches for specific target groups in the context of the different Aichi Biodiversity Targets.
