CMS14 July 2016: The first-ever meeting of the Intergovernmental Task Force on Illegal Killing, Taking and Trade of Migratory Birds concluded with the adoption of the Cairo Declaration in which countries agreed to a "zero tolerance approach" to any illegal killing, taking and trade of migratory birds (IKB) in the Mediterranean Region in accordance with national law, commitments under international conventions and multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs).

EC Adopts First-Ever EU List of Invasive Alien Species [viewed]

EU-SE4ALL13 July 2016: The European Commission (EC) has adopted, for the first time, a list of invasive alien species (IAS) that identifies 37 non-native plants and animals that threaten the EU's environment. Species on the list will be subject to the restrictions and measures set out in the EU Regulation on IAS. EU member countries now have three years to implement control measures for species on the list.

IOC-UNESCO Assesses Status of LMEs and Open Oceans [viewed]

UNESCO IOC13 July 2016: Fifty percent of all fish stocks in large marine ecosystems (LMEs) are overexploited and 60% of the world's coral reefs are threatened by local activities, according to the findings of a series of assessments by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (IOC-UNESCO). The Transboundary Waters Assessment Programme (TWAP) carried out the global assessments of transboundary water systems around the world in LMEs and the open ocean.

African Stakeholders Call for Prioritizing Water at COP 22 [viewed]

conference_international_d'eau12 July 2016: In preparation for the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 22), 650 decision makers, researchers, technical experts, financiers and civil society members from 40 countries came together for an International Conference on Water and Climate. Organized under the theme 'Water Security for Climate Justice,' the conference resulted in a ministerial call from 22 African countries emphasizing the importance of implementing and funding water initiatives in Africa, both in the context of the COP 21 outcomes and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Event: Restoring the Socio-Ecological and Socio-Economic Relationships in the Miombo Woodlands [viewed]

This meeting will seek to create an action plan for the miombo woodlands for the next three years focused on: drivers of land-use change; restoration; adaptation to climate change; socio-ecological relationships; and forest governance. The miombo woodlands are the most extensive warm dry forest type in southern Africa, covering 2.7 million square kilometers that span seven countries. They play a critical ecological, economic and social role, supporting, for example, the livelihoods of more than 65 million people in the region. The meeting is being convened by the Miombo Network, along with the Eduardo Mondlane University, the Global Observation of Forest and Land Cover Dynamics (GOFC-GOLD), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Program on Forests (PROFOR), the Global Change System for Analysis, Research and Training, and the World Bank. The Miombo Network fosters collaborative efforts in land cover monitoring and management.

Event: High-Level Dialogue on Forests and Climate Change [viewed]

This dialogue will convene during the 23rd session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO), which will convene from 18-22 in Rome, Italy, at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). FAO Highlights Publications by DFID and USAID on VGGT Implementation [viewed]

didf_usaid_faoJuly 2016: The inaugural ‘State of the Debate' report of the UK Department for International Development (DFID) programme on ‘Land: Enhancing Governance for Economic Development' (LEGEND) takes stock of land governance initiatives around the world. It concludes that four years since the adoption of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (Voluntary Guidelines or VGGT), much more needs to be done to ensure that they are realized in practice. The report is featured in the July 20016 issue of the Governance of Land Tenure Newsletter of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO).
